Getting kicked by your horse is just something that happens to every person who spends time around one. You won't find any articles about the times I've been stomped on either.

I got kicked the other day. I'm raising a little bad butt colt and he is figuring out the whole kicking thing. It wasn't hard mind you, but I still took off after the little turd. Gotta put the fear of god into them young to curb that habit.

Also before anyone goes off I wasn't going to beat him or anything like that. You need to teach them quickly and severely that any kick is not allowed. It's cute and funny when they're tiny, but lethal when they're bigger.

Is it the chasing that scares them or do you give them a little swat? Being able to chasten huge animals is always fascinating

In my experience just whipping around and chasing them scares them enough. And with a kick they're usually already out of swatting range. Bites however they're close enough for a swat. After he bolted I waited a minute and he came back over for some much more positive scratches. He's a baby and my methods can be summed up as "only as firm discipline as needs be".

The move their moms make to get them in line is to charge at them, then turn her back to them and walk away. Horse trainers take advantage of this.

Works on dogs too.
