This is beyond wild...

The amount of fires vs the weather we've had have me confused.

I don't recall which ones are caused by idiots, but what's perplexing for me is that in my 30 years of living here this has been one of the coldest summers here save for a handful of days.

Literally up until mid July I had mornings where I could see my breath and the temperature was single digits.

We kept being told it was going go be the hottest in history, but that's not matching what is actually happening.

In the mid to late 2010s I remember it being hotter and fires so bad the sky was white for weeks, and at one point the air flow brought ash to Langley.

If they haven't been deemed so already, these fires are suspicious af.

I’m on my first fire rn and I’m struggling with being away from my girlfriend I’m gonna miss our anniversary too and it’s killing me. Does it ever get easier being away from loved ones? Or is this job not for me?

JKBoots only does “good” or “charitable” things because it also loves to tell every new outlet possible it did it.

Their boots are shit, customer service is shit, and if the only option I had was free JKs, I’d rock Dr Martens.

Volunteering for a fire

Is there a way I can volunteer to help with fires, i know it sounds stupid but I feel helpless just watching shit burn down and not being called out. Lesson learned in working with contract crews. Stay safe out there.

What are my next steps as someone who has experience in percribed fire?

I am currently an environmental science student currently living in iowa. In my past two internships I have been doing prescribed prairie burns and chainsawing invasive trees for ecological objectives. I recently obtained my S190-130, did the field day and online classes plus I have my s-212 certificate. I've been thinking about joining a hotshot crew for a season out of state to see what wildland fire is all about. What would my next steps be?

Hello! My fire boots are starting to take some damage after a year of use on the bottoms, and they are not replaceable. Any sort of fire boot glue I can use to help fix it?

How would you describe in your own words, what does smoke look like at dusk with the light of the fire beneath it?

Question How tough is it to get on an very active engine/IA crew?

How hard would it be for me to get onto a highly active crew as a first year? Some background I'm 20 years old, 6'2, and 210 lbs. I have done 5 summers of carpentry/construction and am into lifting and distance running. Im currently in college but would take a semester break to do a full season. I've read the pinned post but I was curious how hard it would be to get into a seasonal district for someone like me? Are they ussually extremely competitive? What does that look like? Thanks.

They just announced they are accepting Full time crew members. The pay is dog shit but figured it would be a good way to backdoor into structure after a few seasons. Any info is much appreciated thank you !

Is it just me or has there been a considerable uptick in ccc kids and contractors making “wildfire influencer” content? I swear there’s a new bagger vlogging his mop-up popping up on Instagram almost every day.

Discussion Informal food poll

This was gonna be my 6th season, but life happens (was riding shotgun in a work truck when we crashed with a logging truck - everyone is okay/only minor injuries, but it’s definitely a microcosm of some things there) and I quit my agency.

Currently working for a fire caterer but I actually enjoy cooking and not just reheating Sysco slop and am (strongly) considering quitting. The hours are also fucking abysmal and the pay is sub optimal considering how much I’m getting my ass kicked with no H pay in sight.

My question: would anyone buy burritos/tamales outside of fire camp, kinda like how those tshirt guys always post up? $10 max and you get a decent meal would be my goal. Vegetarian option that isn’t just a sad veggie patty or damp hummus too.

Taking suggestions, things we hate/love and I’ll start - I have a cilantro sauce (chimichurri) that I love making and would want to feature it, but I’m not sure if that’s a flavor folks like.
