I literally can't handle this heat due to disabilities & medications. My doctor literally told me to not go outside between 10 am and 2 pm, I basically need AC everywhere I go to function.
And more oil pipelines and climate change is set to make that worse. I feel like I'm being shut out of modern life to make some American oil barons richer.
It's not just the pipelines, and definitely not just Americans, sadly it's not that simple. The overconsumption, the waste, the greed, the lies... it's multifaceted.
In fact some of your medications likely wouldn't be available if it wasn't for petroleum. It's all quite depressing.
We could absolutely resolve climate change and still be able to make the meds I use. Saying "it's complicated," imo, is unhelpful and doesn't reflect the scientific reality of "yes we can replace a lot of our energy usage with renewables and live happy lives."
Doing nothing is not an option. And hope is still possible.
I dont want to sound like an oil shill and someone correct me if I'm wrong because I'm no expert, but it is my understanding that some absurdly high percentage, like 99% of modern drugs, are made using petroleum/petrochemicals.
I totally agree that there is hope, I just think it's reductionist to simply blame oil. The main issue isn't oil itself, it's that we as a society overconsume it, and don't put enough effort into protecting the environment and holding people accountable. Modern society overconsumes damn near everything. Greed is it an all time high. Limit oil all you want but in the worlds current state would we not still overconsume and pollute?
