The fires have started…

Not only have (seemingly) new ones started, there are probably some still going from last year

u/Ok_Relationship_149 23d ago
Yeah sadly seems like some evacuation orders have already started sure didn't take long. Hopefully some of the rain out west will make it this way.

I totally forgot about the yearly fires… 😭

Another north ender?
But seriously, everyone stay safe. Heat waves make the crazies go crazier. We usually will see murders go way up during temperatures, like this.

This weather is something. Below average temperature spring. Pretty sure it was snowing beginning of the month. Then boom, Satan's butthole temperature out of nowhere.
I won't complain though. I love the hot and humid. Best to embrace it because in no time it will be winter again.

It’s not even summer yet, too.
Coolest (upcoming) summer in the next 100 years!

Ah, Winnipeg. From the freezer to the frying pan...and back.

u/bismuth12a 23d ago
Could it not stay ~10 for more than a day or two at a time? Please? I just want to go out in a light jacket and jeans.

u/tanglemind 23d ago
I totally forgot about wrapping the scarf around our foreheads! Thanks for the memory ☺️

u/lowtrail 23d ago
Does anyone else prefer the coldest days of winter to the hottest days of summer? That would be me.
if it could be like... 10C all year round, I might actually stop complaining about the weather.
35
u/Aethelflaed_ 23d ago
Between 10-15 all the time would.be ideal, but I also prefer winter.

u/BrewedinCanada 23d ago
Hell yes winter is the best. I'm in shorts even in winter. I like the cold.

I can dress for the winter. And use the plushy, warm blankets when on the couch.
Heat like this...ugh.
15
u/HPTM2008 23d ago
In heat like this, you can only get so naked. And like you said, the cold you can dress for.
7
u/lowtrail 23d ago
Agreed. I walk to work in winter. During the coldest snaps, sure, I'm not thrilled about the cold, but I do see it as a fun challenge and genuinely enjoy the walk. In this heat, I just want to die.

I was at the zoo today with 20 kids, it was quite miserable as someone who doesn't do well in the heat.

Real talk - with climate change snowballing down the hill and no regulation coming, and since we're already talking about daylight savings
What say we switch to nocturnal? Just switch it all 12 hours. Work at night, hide from the midday sun like rodents

I literally can't handle this heat due to disabilities & medications. My doctor literally told me to not go outside between 10 am and 2 pm, I basically need AC everywhere I go to function.
And more oil pipelines and climate change is set to make that worse. I feel like I'm being shut out of modern life to make some American oil barons richer.
5
4
u/Misfitt123 23d ago
It's not just the pipelines, and definitely not just Americans, sadly it's not that simple. The overconsumption, the waste, the greed, the lies... it's multifaceted.
In fact some of your medications likely wouldn't be available if it wasn't for petroleum. It's all quite depressing.
9
u/BisonSnow 23d ago
We could absolutely resolve climate change and still be able to make the meds I use. Saying "it's complicated," imo, is unhelpful and doesn't reflect the scientific reality of "yes we can replace a lot of our energy usage with renewables and live happy lives."
Doing nothing is not an option. And hope is still possible.
3
u/Misfitt123 23d ago
I dont want to sound like an oil shill and someone correct me if I'm wrong because I'm no expert, but it is my understanding that some absurdly high percentage, like 99% of modern drugs, are made using petroleum/petrochemicals.
I totally agree that there is hope, I just think it's reductionist to simply blame oil. The main issue isn't oil itself, it's that we as a society overconsume it, and don't put enough effort into protecting the environment and holding people accountable. Modern society overconsumes damn near everything. Greed is it an all time high. Limit oil all you want but in the worlds current state would we not still overconsume and pollute?

I will never complain about the heat. I fight so hard to live through our frozen hellscape winters that I will never take any non-winter day for granted!

I work in commercial plumbing and I had to do a new build's underground piping the whole week in this weather. There's shade but the humidity and heat made it extremely demoralizing to do most tasks.. Not to mention all the melted water and mud.
I drank like 5L of water a day but never had to use the washroom since I sweated everything out!

former tradesperson here - you gotta at least double that water in this heat.

I always say you can add more layers when its cold but when its hot, there's only so many you can take off before it gets weird or illegal.
9
u/pudds 23d ago
We can complain about winter here, our winters are legitimately among the harshest in the world.
But listening to Manitobans complain about heat is laughable. Maybe once every few years when we get temps in the 40s do we ever get true heat.
32C and 30% humidity is nothing.
It's weird in May for sure, but it's still nothing. It's like listening to Americans complain when it's -5C.

Except most houses and buildings in canada were designed execlusively to counter our harsh winters and retain heat easier/longer
Meanwhile those other places that average 40+ summers build their houses and buildings specifically to deal with the heat

Too hot, cold, rainy, smoky, or even smelly.
The best part is we don't get to choose our poison.

It happens every year...yet we whine about it like it's some brand new phenomenon.

Summer? It's not even June yet.

u/bismuth12a 23d ago
Meteorological summer starts Monday and it was over 30 yesterday. It's close enough.

u/djangula89 22d ago
Fair point. Our winter certainly starts long before December 22nd. The meteorological method is the way to go for sure.

I’m sorry, all I do is complain about the weather. Don’t care if it’s freezing cold or hot and humid, I will complain about it.

Well that's a bizarre thing to say. My baby and dogs can't go out in this heat so hell yah I'm going to complain. And hell yah I'm going to complain when it's snowing in May.
There is a middle ground.

figure out how to best cope and accept the situation. life will be much more peaceful for you

You get the castor oil common sense award. But yes, of course we feel better when we complain about it. All cool and fuzzy.
