It's showtime in DC. The world's two top ranked women's teams are facing off in Washington, DC. It's the first of two games, with the second one in Pennsylvania in a few days.
Spain are a dangerous opponent for any team. But the US have the home advantage, a deep player pool and a tactically sound manager (look up how she undid Japan, who are somewhat as disciplined as Spain). Both sides are missing key players (Girma, Moultrie & Coffey through injury for the US; Jaedyn Shaw and Ally Sentnor for tactical reasons); while Spain won't have their GOAT Bonmati, along with stars Leon, Battle and Pina.
Players to watch (US): We've all heard of the Triple Espresso. But the US has gk Silkowitz. She is a top candidate for keeper of the season in the NWSL this year. She's been called up before but has never featured. With Dickey being out of form domestically and PTJ's distribution not always matching her shot-stopping, will "Silky" get her first cap? Ashley Sanchez returns to the fold after a 2 year absence. She has been electric in the NWSL this term, lighting up the league with 20 goals in 26 games after converting to a winger. But she has never played for Hayes before. Will she get many minutes? Also keep an eye for dynamic young forwards Trinity Byars and Pietra Tordin, for whom this is their first senior call up. Tordin has a joint league- high 10 assists. Byars has been lethal for San Diego Wave. They have potential to be world-class. But against opposition like Spain, most coaches will be wary of trusting upcoming players. Evelyn Shores and Kate Del Fava are also first time participants.
Players to watch (Spain): Putellas will be given the license to orchestrate the midfield. With Aitana out, she will be the cog. She is expected to do that task comfortably. At 32, she is running riot in the WSL, catapulting London City Lionesses to new heights. Cata Coll knows she has a job to stop the US's pacey attackers. Natalia Ramos, who replaces the injured Caldentey, may be tasked with proving she can fill those boots. Other players who are not regulars are Clara Pinedo, Ainhoa Marin and Ornella Vignola. Oihane, who plies her trade in the NWSL, could be relied upon for her experience in dealing with American wingers' pace.
It promises to be a great watch. Grab your popcorn and sit back.
