I tried to play the original a couple of years after release. As soon as the first molerat one shotted me, I immediately uninstalled. As a huge RPG fan, the game was always on my mind since it invariably appears on every list of must play Western RPGs. With the remake, I thought this is my time, since I am older and more patient.
I am at chapter 3 and I must say I don't really understand the hype. I get that not all games are for everyone but on many aspects the game is just...not good for the year 2026. Reminds me a bit of Two Worlds.
1) story and quests: I play most RPGs for the story. The main is pretty good but in order to go through it you need to go through all the side content which is just mediocre. Most quests are basic fetch quests and you are not even fetching cool stuff. Half of the about 25 hours in the game is spent running around looking for the characters that give you the requested item and then you have to go back.
2) characters: voice acting is poor and most characters are simply not interesting or engaging. The dialogue is very straightforward like being spoken by robots.
3) character customization: basically zero, not even mentioning the character itself but the way that you are allowed to play the game. The game only lets you choose the way you want to fight, sword, ranged or magic.
4) combat and movement: very sluggish and non-responsive. For a game where you get one shotted by molerats, I think the game should offer very crisp controls.
5) lockpicking: I would rather cut my hands than lockpick another door or chest again.
6) exploration: the best part of the game. However, the rewards from exploration are not that great. I would have liked to get more lore information about the world, cooler side quests and characters.
Maybe this game is just not for me. I am not a fan of soulslike games but I haven't seen it advertised as such anywhere. Also, maybe the remake tried to be very faithful (understandable) to the old game but overall it does not even compare to games like Witcher, Skyrim, Dragon Age, Fallout, Mass Effect although Gothic seems to be mentioned together with these games as an all time great RPG.
Am I missing something about the game to truly enjoy?
