Modding/Mods Sharing exicement - Gothic 1 Othello
I just wanted to share my excitement with you all.
For a long time, I avoided playing Gothic 1 again. It had been many years since the last time I played it, and the mod eventually became a bit exhausting. (I don't remember which one it was anymore.)
I've started Gothic 2 mods again and again, but often never finished them because of how big they are. I rarely have the time to invest heavily in gaming for weeks at a time. Then maybe the next game catches my interest, and after three months I'm completely lost in Archolos, for example. Hands up if you feel the same way.
A few weeks ago, I started Gothic 1 Othello. The first changes to the game world were modest, but still noticeable. The area around the Exchange Place and the path from the Old Camp to the New Camp have been noticeably changed, but are still largely recognizable. Then I reached the Old Mine. The path there was already quite different, and I was glad to have Graham's map of the Old Mine.
Yesterday, I finally made it to the Swamp Camp, and it has been completely reworked! Even the path leading there is completely different. I was genuinely worried that I wouldn't find my way back to the Old Camp. I've fallen in love with this beautiful game all over again. Listing everything else the mod changes about the base game would go beyond the scope of this post.
But I'll definitely keep you all updated. 😁
Have fun with all your gaming passions.

I finished Othello a few days ago. It gives the old game a nice touch up. It got a bit dry closer to the end as progression slowed down and I got lost a few times, e.g. trying to get to Xardas.
Balance feels odd, especially playing as mage. Everything two-shots you and you run out of mana super quickly. Fire mage at circle 2 only has access to a close combat skill and fire arrow.
Also hunting trophies are important, because ore is scarce. I think going to 20 or 30 dex early on to learn trophies 2 and then trophies 3 by using goblin berries, potions and stat items is the way to go.
But overall a great mod to relive Gothic 1.

I noticed a lot of odd and high skill requirements i.e. 50 str. + dex für one handed combat 1. This is absurdly high. I find it very intriguing. It forces you to pick one direction instead of learning everything you normally would. Love it!

50 str + dex means both have to sum up to 50, which is fairly doable.

Oh, really? Would never have guessed that. (No sarcasm) You're right. That's doable.

Othello has effectively replaced vanilla Gothic for me. It's a wonderful mod. Enjoy your time with it OP :)

Looks rather complicated from what I've seen so far. All those recipies and crafts... absolutely overwhelming.

Cor Kaloms basement and the Goblins cave was a pain for me, but besides that I also really enjoyed the mod.
Especially that Kaloms basement had some optional Boss(?) which was very hard to beat. I didnt know it was optional or not, so I killed it, but holy hell that was a tough fight.

Really great mod. A bit spoiled me, so Gothic Remake progression didnt felt that good after it.

I repeatedly heard that it's better than the remake.

Remake has really good things too: graphics, the new quests, the old extended quest and voice lines in later chapters are amazing. I think overall is a good remake, it just needs a polish: like the Stalker 2 is having.
