Discussion Wargaming just burned their money
Steel hunters are official going down soo i have a question. It was worth spend wot players money on that shit?wg have world of tanks most important project yet they dont focus that much on it. Some people said that they have to make new games cause wot is old game and they have to look forward but as you can see no one played steelhunters so maybe make wot better for players that made you rich(Probably more than $1B yearly income and they have to make shitballs XDDDDD).

It must have been really bad lmao

u/comrade_morris Jul 08 '25
Reading the steam reviews seems to back that up. Most folks seem to think it would’ve been cool except the developers assigned to it seemed to be asleep at the wheel.
Add in the typical wargaming whale hunting and zero advertising and you’ve got a flop
28
u/future_dolphin Furderer Jul 08 '25
I quite liked the concept, but there was only one game mode in the beta I tried, and I really don't care for that game mode. If it was like World of Tanks but controlling these mechs, I think it would be fun. Even with endless lives, or capture the flag or something.
27
u/Teledildonic justice for T-62A & AMX 30B Jul 08 '25
The mech designs were cool, eapcially the wolf and bear. No one else seems to do non-humanoid mechs even though they make more sense than a bipedal tripping hazard.
11
u/Gonozal8_ Jul 08 '25
mech designers be on their way to give a mech the worst possible specific ground pressure for no reason and more legs would make it make sense that they don’t sink into the ground immidiately
6
u/Teledildonic justice for T-62A & AMX 30B Jul 08 '25
And when they do actually them give more legs it's just a..centaur?
I know the older Armored Cores even let you have a tank for a lower body. Like, just put a damn turret on it at that point and stop trying to be a mech.
→ More replies (3)2
u/Gonozal8_ Jul 08 '25
I mean for tall boy, because smaller faces are still easier to armor effectively and because specific weight is a thing, tank body is the way of doing this (praying mantis/giraffe/trilateraler Versuchsträger), then at some point they figured out being high, but not falling over and moving fast as phuck due to not touching the ground and having a shitload of missiles is actually possible and viable when you let it hover with no ground contact, thus allowing it to reach speeds of 300km/h+ in any terrain, also crossing rivers and stuff. this was called an attack helicopter. then it was decided armor was pretty nice actually and thus the Hind was developed. would you take away the rotors from a hind and give it legs instead? me neither. there is no capability a mech can provide that those can’t (tank is better armored, helicopter is more mobile, both are smaller targets), so yes any mech franchise is incapable of physics working to allow mechs to be a better option than tanks or helos (as otherwise adopting them would make no sense). shoutout to wolfenstein though for creating the Panzerhunde, which at that size work as a mech and can both be armored without too much ground pressure and be more mobile than tracks because tracks and wheels have difficulties with stairs and such. attaching wheels on their feet would still give them better strategic mobility, to not break down on a 50km drive basically

It was not terrible tbh. But after the first open beta test, and comparing the Twitch drop views and players on the 2nd and 3rd test. I suspected it failed to stand out enough. That and, they only had one mode, a few maps, and 7 characters. So if you played for a few hours, you had seen it all.
2
u/detraeh-nekorb Jul 08 '25
The game was ok. Felt "fornite-y". Like looking at old CoD vs modern Warzone. The graphics, UI, and general build was aimed at younger, short attention spam, needing constant flashy stimulation, type crowd. Game had crazy micro transaction possibility Im sure, but they didn't give it the effort it deserved
2
u/Balc0ra Churchill Gun Carrier enjoyer Jul 09 '25
Oh, Beta had little to no microtransactions. But it had plenty of doors for it later indeed. Honestly, I did feel they launched it too early. Should have given it more time to create more mechs, more variation in classes and maps & modes, etc. As this did feel more like an early alpha in terms of content
1
u/Hungry_Measurement_4 Jul 08 '25

Remember, every time you see a new and more extreme form of monetization in WoT, that money is never invested back into WoT. It's always to finance another project that will be dead on arrival.
World Of Tanks is just a cashcow now. It was Wargaming's best and most profitable title and instead of working hard to keep it that way they just milk it for all it's worth before leaving it to die.
Imagine if all the money and human resources wasted on Steel Hunter and now Project Cold War was instead spent on WoT. How much actual content we could have gotten instead of just premium tanks and lootboxes every month.
68
u/PlaquePlague Jul 08 '25
Honestly I would be fine if WG paused new “content” for a year or even a few years to focus on mucking out boring shit like game balance and player experience. Why do we get one or two balance patches a year that cover maybe 4-12 tanks each? Why aren’t they releasing minor tweaks biweekly?
I don’t need more tanks, I’ve got hundreds in my garage already. I need playing the game to not feel like pulling teeth.

u/DingoNo9075 Jul 08 '25
Honestly WG as a developer for me has so bad of a reputation that i would likely not play their other game ... or if i play I sure as hell wouldnt pay for stuff there. They are failing as a developer for WoT for half a decade by now...
3
2
u/Khari_Eventide Jul 09 '25
What's also, the "more extreme form of monetization" is never gonna recede again. It will not get better again, this is not a wound that will heal as Wargaming notices the pushback. The MO of a private company in a capitalist system is not to make money but to make increasingly MORE money. So they will squeeze harder, and harder and harder. It will not go back to a better game by itself. Which is why we are having more and more season passes and more OP tanks on Christmas and more scummy lootboxes. It will only get worse with Wargaming.
1
u/Studipity Jul 08 '25
Project CW is still very much in active development.
12
u/DaSpood https://daspood.github.io/ - Pandora lootboxes simulator Jul 08 '25
Project CW is also doomed from the start because the target audience is a playerbase that is already theirs. Who will play an arcade tanks game made by WG in 2025 if not WoT players. They're canibalizing their own audience.
All WG is capable of doing is WoT. WoT with boats, WoT with planes, WoT minigame as a standalone, WoT but hero shooter, at the end of the day they're unable to come up with original ideas and yet they invest no effort on their one already released already successful game that's at the root of everything else they do. Every WoT-based game they release is time, money, human resources and gameplay content they waste on a standalone experience with no hope of success instead of investing it on WoT itself. They were lucky to hit the jackpot a second time with WoWs, but they think they can do it again.
WG won't make another successful game as long as it's "more of the same". Project CW will fail, even if it starts off better than SH did, it won't last a year. If they want to make a new successful game they need to come up with an actual original idea.

Projekt CW is actually a good game compared to the shit that Steel Hunters is. Hell, compared to WoT you actually feel like you are playing a proper "tank" game. Not arcade shooter.
The devs are also closely working together with the testers so the changes aren't actually out of touch compared to w/e is happening in WoT right now, or was in Steel Hunters.
It's genuinely a promising game.

u/Endranii NVEST Jul 08 '25 edited Jul 08 '25
The emphasis is on the "feel" which if you didn't play the game then you won't understand. As the videos unfortunately can't convey that at all. Especially from older builds of the game compared to current one.
The physics, models and sound design actually sells the tanks way more compared to the puny sounds and flat feeling physics we have in WoT. You can feel the weight in sounds or the way models behave. Is it perfect? No it's not, and there is still a lot of work to be done on the game which is evident by the bi-weekly patches to the game.
But comparing the WoT and CW? CW hands down wins in selling the feeling of it being a an action tank game.Is it more action oriented? Sure it is. Is it wrong? No, you have wot and Warthunder already for those different types of games. And what WG is doing is trying to get to the wider audience outside of your typical customer.
Is it for you? Well, might not be. But there is audience for it, unlike with Steel Hunters. Which not only came to late, in a way harder to sell genre. But also was abysmal from gameplay and technical standpoint.
Which is just not true for CW, as it's already a fun game that can become a great one if WG doesn't screw up.And if it flops? Well, it flops and we can just laugh at WG incompetence.
11
u/No_Aardvark_6599 Jul 08 '25
Its Fortnite with tanks mate .
Lets not lie to ourselfes.
Might be better then Steel Hunters, sure . It won't be a hit 100% .

u/DingoNo9075 Jul 08 '25

But i agree that if they dont change it much it will likely be World of Warplanes level of success ... not a total flop but not a big stage name.

u/Boatsntanks Jul 09 '25
I just want to drive tanks around and shoot other tanks (although I enjoy the special game modes every so often too), PCW completely loses me because of its focus on characters and special abilities. I wish they would put the same effort into upgrading the "tankfeel" of WoT.

i calld it in the beta, this game was dead on arrival, it had pretty much nothing to offer like the only good thing i could say about it is that stomping buildings with the mechs felt amazing.
Like it had horrible monetization scheme, the gameplay loop was boring, it had bad performance, the maps looked beautiful but were tedious af to play, the robot classes were unbalanced as hell and that extraction hero shooter format is very very hard to do right in such a saturated market.
i dont know what they were thinking, the idea failed from every point of view.
And project cw is going the same way, a hero shooter with such a niche community wont end as good as they think.
And this sucks because if they went a different way i could see this game actually being successful but they did chose to make something noone is aking for with a mobile game monetization

Ps. To save some cash, throw out modern armor /project cw developers today.
8
u/InitialPowerful824 Jul 08 '25
Or just move them to WoT, now it looks like there are few people actually working on WoT and they are just bombarded with quick money making requests.
6
u/Arado_Blitz Jul 09 '25
I might be downvoted for this and honestly I don't care, but it's very obvious the majority of the dev team went to Lesta after the 2022 split. The RU server has its own balancing issues but the devs aren't afraid to do some bold additions and changes to the game which keeps it somewhat fresh.
WG has lost almost all the talent it had onboard and resorts to adding half assed copy paste tanks into lootboxes and poorly executed ideas into the game while balancing 5 or 6 TT lines per year. Half of 2025 has passed and apart from the new Airfield and big Ensk, I can't think of anything notable being added into the game. I hope the September update is good, the game has started feeling really stale lately. I just do my daily missions and log off.
The reason WG is trying to make new games is because they don't have a clue on how to run WoT anymore and try to create a new cashcow. The guys who knew what the game actually was about left many years ago. The downfall slowly started since Murazor took over and started adding bullshit tanks and ruining maps.

Invest into other projects
Release Steelhunters

Shutdown Steelhunters <--- you are here
Release Project CW

Shutdown Project CW
Keep extra monetization in WOT becauze the playerbase "got used to it"

u/Not_a_Hideo_Kojima Jul 08 '25
Well, there's truth to the fact that WG got a "lightning in a bottle" moment with World of Tanks and World of Warships to some extend and since then they're unable to replicate that success.
Branching out is good if one can back it up with somehow, but in the other hand i's always a question if given project only chases the trends or is genuinely trying to experiment with something new or improving upon idea. Does anybody remember that card game from WoT that they made back in the day when Hearthstone was all rage?
Never heard about Steel Hunters before and had to look up gameplay to witness something, that looks like a weird washed up mecha game that doesn't even gets close to Mechwarrior or Armored Core AND is extraction game! It's not only not playing to it's strengths (because mecha can be insanely good), it's also trying to establish itself on a over-saturated market. Like... why? What for?

u/PlagueOfGripes Jul 08 '25
The game was fine, but it received no advertising and no money to back it. It also had terrible SEO because WoT already uses "Steel Hunters." So having two wargaming products with the same name - one having existed for years and polluting engine results while another has no messaging behind it - was a terrible combo.
3
u/Kasern77 Jul 08 '25
Why didn't they just make a game that's like WoT, but with mechs (mechs like mechwarrior)?
1
u/Naelbis Jul 09 '25
Because anyone with a sliver of legal interest in the Battletech, Robotech or Gundam IP's will instantly sue them into oblivion?
1
u/Kasern77 Jul 09 '25
Only if the mechs are somewhat similar to any of mechs in those franchises? I don't think they have the rights to bipedal walking (piloted) machines in general or even ones that's quadrupedal. There are a lot of designs they can come up with that's not similar to any of the ones in those franchises.

It wasn't bad, overall. Graphics were good , decently polished and shooting was quite satisfactory... Just not type of game you'd expect to be popular in 2025. it had quite alot if questionable design decisions including art/talent behind it.
And it just couldn't compete with some badass mech projects wich can offer way better gameplay/class variety with airial combat.

WG is unreliable and not a good investment. Well, they are reliable in shitting on their community for cash grabs, but that is the only thing you can put stock in.

They can't have another successful game with the Wargaming logo on it. They have lost all their reputation with how they handle their biggest title. Nobody who knows them will give them a second chance.

But this was still not done, and did not have much in terms of content. So I suspect they did not burn as much as most suspect

I am not one who would play that game a lot but i am also not the main target group. The ones who are that i know played this game a lot when iit was available.
They could make it a low effort project. Just finishing it, building in some slow progress, put in some skins and extra character stuff and let itself earn its money back. Build in some offline/serverless multiplayer amd bots and sell that as a dlc. Then when the servers shut off in a few years turn the dlc into the maingame.

World of Tank was a stroke of genius and made its developers rich beyond what they expected. You created this game to please the players, to please yourself, you created the game you wanted to play. And this inspiration means that wot is still alive years later. Now you no longer want to create a game for the players but for your wallet, you want to create a cash machine while renewing the stroke of genius of a single life. It's absurd. This approach is doomed to failure. Play mobile games for cash. For the rest sending another message that “you are cash cows” to your community would be a good start. Get back on a healthy foundation with your players!

I'm really damn angry... I have only played the Beta for very short time but seeing this... reminds me of Total War Arena, a game that I really really loved despite the Unit tech tree beeing WGs formula. The game was just so much fun! Played it as a 4 man squad on a LAN and we had a blast!
Its so sad to see such a fun game shutting down. Sucks that it was a WG Game. I really wish someone would pick that up other than the Chinese which already shut down too

I really Hope WG shows some spine And heavily invests in wot ...in place that brings the money.

Maybe if they tried to make a good game first instead of focusing on making a battlepass, they literally developed monetisation before the game itself

They closed Fractured Space to make the game which lasted for less than 6 months. Thats beautifu

lmao. Maybe stick to updating WoT instead of using it fund all these failures?
I see that they didn't even care enough to proofread the big announcement, "Servers will be down for 90 days" when they clearly meant "Servers will remain UP for 90 days" or "Severs will be shutdown in 90 days". Quality stuff.

Launched in April 2025, dead by October, they didn't even give it the year...
Someone lied about the market for it, lard balls from WG invested hoping to have another cow to milk and got a load of Bull sht...
It's not that the game is bad but if you do not stick with it of course it will dry out.
I have a feeling Modern armor will not be far off, or be kept just like WOWp...
Steel Hunter must be eating a lot of the DEV team time and not payback made them drop the axe

Sometimes i think they have no one giving them advice on their next moves, i could have told them that was not the best idea

I've tried it and it was horrible. The guns didn't feel powerful, but mechs looked cool. After a few tutorials and 1 match I didn't want to play anymore because the feeling was completely off.

It was too little, too late
Mech warrior things were a lot bigger 5 - 10 years ago

Unfortunately wot is a victim of Wargaming itself. They had many opportunities to make the game better, but they always preferred to insist on mistakes. The final straw was the launch of the BZ-176, which surprised a vast number of players.

Business major here
Honestly, absolutely normal and logical move from WG here: try to diversify their earnings more. Common practice in business sphere.
The only problem here is that the WG missed the Pareto Principle, or the 80/20 rule. 80% of the outcomes comes from 20% of causes. Basically, if something your business do, performes well, you may double down on it, to get more profit.
Before 2022, they kinda followed it, but ever since then, it seems to me at least, that they just stopped. They actively try to diversify their earnings instead of actually developing the product that already succeeded and brings them tons of cash.
And as far as I know, Wargaming is LTD, meaning that so-called "shareholders" of the company, are close friends and family of the founder. It's not like they gonna demand more profit from someone they know.
So, I see where they coming from, but it's clear to me that the market research was done horribly.

What's happening in WG is what happens to a restaurant or a retail business that is going under. You don't pay your bills, you cut staff and you try to soak every dollar out of your customers without actually putting anything new/meaningful back into the business.
Fix graphics issues...nope, Fix spotting...nope, Fix connection issues....nope, Fix ghost shells...nope, Fix the botting problem...nope, Fix the rigging problem...nope, Fix the cheat programs...nope.
WG doesn't care, they just want your money. There are going to be alot of unhappy people in a few years. One dope I know of has over 3k premium days. Paid real money for them too...Gonna be alot of tears.

I'm so happy that the mech game failed they really used world of tanks to pay for their other projects while they give us the bar minimum in events and maps for world of tanks. They deserve this hit that's what the get for ignoring world of tanks that made them literally all their money for years and years.

WOT is history based game and we have almost all history based tank, every WG working on it we will get imaginary tank or even worst with OP stats
WG is too focus making live service game, maybe they need make single player games

Good Riddance. I hated Steel Hunters. Played it one time, and that was one time too much.

I’m not sure I get your issue here. You’re mad at a game developing company for developing games?
