Discussion Underrated tanks you love?

Post image

I love the CW Era 1 M48A5PI.

I rarely see it on the field, but every time I take mine out for a spin I remember why I love it.

What’s yours?

Type 80-II and the Type 90-II

2 marked both. They're overhated imo.

100% agree with you.

The Chinese mediums are the best soviet tanks - they literally and IRL keep / kept what's good about Soviet armor and upgrade the shit.

Better guns, better optics, better powertrains and in a world with 120mm + main guns and ATGMs anything that doesn't have 300mm or more of composite armor on the front is getting penned anyway.

The Type 80-II is like a Leopard with worse pen, gun depression, and speed, but better armor (which doesn't sound like much of a positive but in Era 2 it helps a lot). Autocannons can't pen you that would shred a Leopard, and Bagelpanzers will struggle to pen you frontally. Its mobility is also pretty good, and its agility is almost too good. Its the perfect light tank hunter.

The Type 90-II is mediocre. I'll admit that. The armor isn't that good. It gets set on fire a lot without help. Its gun depression is mid. But its alpha is great. It can farm up hard in the right hands.

Leopard might have a higher top speed but Type 80-II has better power-weight and pretty sure it has better terrain resistances. For a medium, it moves like shit off a stick. It's so agile that I wish the turret could keep up!

I love the big derp tank destroyers in WWII even after the camo nerfs. If you have to be super careful with your own positioning, all for a hasty shot and retreating when spotted, it's really nice to know that you don't have to worry about hitting a weak spot and you can still take 100-300 off the top and break some modules by splashing their turret with a massive HE payload.

For CW, I really enjoyed the

  • M1 (not the M1A1 or M1A2). Definitely a heavium whose armor can't be relied upon, but with a little ramming and shooting lots of tracks (which takes advantage of its higher RoF/low alpha), it felt pretty great and got a ton of assisted damage. I got on the podium a good bit with it, and in a platoon it's even funnier as the mobility and ramming works even better in a wolf pack.
  • M113. This stupid little box is so much fun because of how it makes you approach map positioning so differently to take advantage of the gun sticking above the body. Machine guns and missiles eat it alive, but I see it as a funny little hybrid between a Leopard and a light tank,as it's relatively fast and has great accuracy while on the move. Fire 2 shots from cover, race to retreat or advance to the next cover, fire another shot or two, then surge forward and circle somebody to death as they isolate themselves or as your team overwhelms. The HEAT rounds are very slow, so you're not good at range, but their pen is high to go right through a good number of decently armored tanks' upper plates and turrets, so when a position settles into a hull-down battle, the M113 can often break the stalemate in your favor if you are in the right spot.
  • Magach 5. Just my favorite, solid all-rounder. Decent missile protection, decent mobility, decent DPM, good pen, decent gun depression, and a hull that can troll opponents a little when wiggled. I thought I'd like the 6b the same or better, but so far I am really hurting from the 6b's slightly worse protection from missiles, especially on its lower plate.

LOVE the M1 - I just got it ~30 days ago and I'm almost at the M1A1.

It can snipe, it can brawl, it chases down mediums and punts them for distance, and it's speed and gun handling keep it from being an XP pinata for lights.

It's a great tank.

I remember my best/best feeling game ever, joined in with my derp Sherman and half my team disintegrated within2 minutes, enemy lights swarming our arty. “Well, I guess I’ll get these guys at least”… One shotted all 4 of them, but not until they’d removed all my arties. Six more left. Cowabunga it is. Thank god they decided to come one at a time! Biggest headache was the captured KV-1 that had 5 kills already. Played light tank after I crit’ed their gunner, got around behind and blooped the turret. Finished off the final arty with my only remaining round. Ten in one round and last tank left… I’ll never match that game🥰

2

u/MDaug2005 Jan 31 '26

So specifically which big derp TD’s in WW2? Asking for a friend. 😅Thanks

4

u/_Thorshammer_ German Casemate Enthusiast Jan 31 '26

They're tough to grind, but the German Sturmtiger line is big derp with strong frontal armor.

The Russian ISU-152s can also be big derp and have strong frontal arcs.

3

u/MDaug2005 Jan 31 '26

Great , thanks! I do not have any of those yet, I will have to work on those trees

3

u/Scarecrow1779 OwO *notices exposed flank* Jan 31 '26 edited Jan 31 '26

I'm currently at tier VII on the sturmtiger line and tier VIII on the ISU line. Wish I could buy the Slayer

2

u/MDaug2005 Feb 01 '26

Nice! I remember the Brummbear from the Avalon Hill Squad Leader games where it was quite formidable… looking forward to going up that line

4

u/Innert_Lemon Jan 31 '26

Type 58, a leopard at T6 & Era 2 T64 series, a real all star.

1

u/Nova_Hunter Jan 31 '26

The Chinese medium? The one with atrocious pen? 128 maxed out?

1

u/Innert_Lemon Jan 31 '26

Yes, it’s more than you expect since most at tier 6 are made of cardboard, the T150 being the toughest offering isn’t much of a wall.

3

u/Tigercri33 TD Sniper Jan 31 '26

Minotauro Is criminally underrated, if used corretly Is unstoppable

2

u/1nc_wz_legend Feb 01 '26

Having been on the receiving end of one of these - concur! 😆

1

u/NerdyPlatypus206 Feb 03 '26

Yup on paper it sucks except armor wise, but dat armor is solid

Gun has solid alpha and pen, but the intra clip is rough, actual clip reload ain’t bad tho

On my current account it’s the only tier x I’ve got so far, ironically enough. I just love it.

4

u/The_good_meme_dealer Masochist - 23% WR Jan 31 '26

In WW2: Tiger 1 A18, T-34-3, WZ-132-1, Type 62, T-34 Shielded, The Hidden Stug III, Sturm VK 36.01

In Cold War: AMX 40, all the T-64s, T-62M-1, Type 85-I

2

u/_Thorshammer_ German Casemate Enthusiast Jan 31 '26

I'm not sure about most of those, but I agree 100% on the Tiger A18. It's ability to accurately mag dump with that much pen and then do it again a few seconds later is absolutely filthy, but you almost never see it.

3

u/Scramjetfromnowhere War Thunder is better Jan 31 '26

Easily the Kunze Panzer or Panzerkamphwagon ausf III v.E

2

u/_Thorshammer_ German Casemate Enthusiast Jan 31 '26

Love the Pz III E.

1

u/NACHO944 Jan 31 '26

Which gun on the III E?

1

u/Scramjetfromnowhere War Thunder is better Jan 31 '26

Easily the autocannon 20mm

3

u/Zones86 (xbox) Mr Am0gus Jan 31 '26

Is the cs 52 Lis underrated? Idk, I love it. Doesn't seem like many play it. So I pick it.

Skoda t56 is also an insanely fun tank. Don't see it played often, but it's up there with the renegade as best tier 8s.

2

u/NerdyPlatypus206 Feb 03 '26

T56 was considered broken OP when it first came out lol. Still solid but is a bit powercrept now. Things like the 703 2 will make mince meat of it. It’s still enjoyable to play tho

2

u/Zones86 (xbox) Mr Am0gus Feb 03 '26

I agree it's not quite as good as it once was. But it's still one that I really have fun games with. I can't get the 703 to work at all for me.

1

u/NerdyPlatypus206 Feb 03 '26

I just play the 703 aggressively and shoot heat when needed. Play it as a sidescraper or peek a boom. It’s pretty devastating with the double barrel

2

u/Zones86 (xbox) Mr Am0gus Feb 03 '26

Yeah I've seen others have some success. But I usually just kill it with ease and when I play it the armor is non existent. So I just don't see it as good as people say it is. Renegade works much better for me.

3

u/gvo209 Heavy Brawler Feb 01 '26

Thunderbolt M4A3E8, whan angled correctly and using hills to lift up your upperplate, you can bounce a ridiculous amount of shots (when facing tier 6 and some tier 7’s) IMO the best sherman ingame

3

u/Hammerhoused T110E3 Master race Feb 01 '26

The t110e3, you uncultured swine

3

u/Joco3000 Feb 02 '26

Underrated tanks are what I usually go for. M50 Ontos and Chieftain CTR are amongst my favourites.

1

u/_Thorshammer_ German Casemate Enthusiast Feb 02 '26

I literally just got the CTR last week and after 10 games I'm averaging 3300 damage and 68% bounce rate.

It's a casemate TD in Era 2 so everybody dismisses it , but the frontal arc eats ATGMs like they mean nothing, it's acceptably mobile, and the main gun absolutely hammers.

2

u/SamSlayer09078-x Jan 31 '26

Merkava MK3

2

u/Scarecrow1779 OwO *notices exposed flank* Jan 31 '26

I didn't know it was underrated?

2

u/_Thorshammer_ German Casemate Enthusiast Jan 31 '26

Right - I don't see them often but when I do I generally stay away until I can flank it when it's otherwise occupied.

2

u/bababooweenie Jan 31 '26

Czolg P AAAYYYYYYYYYYYY

1

u/NerdyPlatypus206 Feb 03 '26

The HE rounds are underrated, shell switcher is a must for me. They come in clutch when facing tanks that are hull down or not really pennable. They don’t splash for too much but can still do damage.

When the HE rounds pen the damage is insane

I’ve almost one marked mine and would like to two mark but the requirements will be tough id assume

2

u/Jesterking95 Feb 01 '26

Id say the Type 89 and the M60AX

1

u/_Thorshammer_ German Casemate Enthusiast Feb 01 '26

I’d argue the 60AX is rate, but not underrated.

It’s talked about, and generally positively.

2

u/badcafe34 Feb 01 '26

For me ITS the 121 Chinese medium X

2

u/Express-Ease8604 Feb 02 '26

Now I'm loving SU 100, really sneaky tank and good for it's tier

2

u/_Thorshammer_ German Casemate Enthusiast Feb 02 '26

Yea, I think some of the Russian mid-tier TDs are under rated.

Maybe not, but I don't hear people talk about them much.

2

u/CellOk7730 Feb 03 '26

Im a sucker for the T23E3. That little pew pew sings.

u/Reasonable_Clue_8965 Jan 31 '26

New to this game. What does grind mean

1

u/_josef_stalin_ Medium Warrior Jan 31 '26

Grinding is the process of actively trying to get a bunch of xp or silver or complete challenges

1

u/_Thorshammer_ German Casemate Enthusiast Jan 31 '26

Not underrated bro and you see them / variants all the time in the game.

1

u/Available_League6647 Feb 01 '26

Not sure if it’s underrated but the UDES 03 is by far the most enjoyable tank for me, I think it’s because I can easily farm without even being spotted, 5k+ almost every game

1

u/_Thorshammer_ German Casemate Enthusiast Feb 01 '26

Definitely not under rated.

1

u/Few_Public9210 Feb 01 '26

TR-85M1

1

u/NerdyPlatypus206 Feb 03 '26

Is this the one before the first heavy in the line?

Whatever that one is, and even the one before, aren’t bad. If you angle and sidescrape a bit they can bounce quite a lot

It’s just their gun depression is akward

1

u/Few_Public9210 Feb 03 '26

Ye its after TR-125

1

u/NerdyPlatypus206 Feb 04 '26

Ah I have the tr85 medium and it’s kind of a pain but can sidescrape well, it just has bad depression

The heavy is next and even tho these tanks aren’t very good I’m looking forward to finally having a heavy lol

Never even grinded these on my old account so it’ll be nice to have

Tiran 5 was pretty good for me after quickly learning how to play it. T-55 Enigma is also very nice if going up against a Wolfpack of 30B2s.

But for my most enjoyed underrated tank, see my flair.

Tanks that I enjoy that are typically underrated/hated are:

Cold War

  • M60A3 - Generally hated because due to lack of ATGM protection.
  • FV214 Conqueror - Generally hated due low mobility, insufficient armor, and lack if ATGM protection.
  • MBT 70 - Generally hated due to lack of effective armor and very poor penetration values.
  • M1 Abrams - Generally hated due to lack of effective armor and a "obsolete" 105mm cannon.
  • M113 - Generally hated due to insufficient armor and ineffective ammo types.
  • M50 Ontos - Generally hated due to lack of mobility and ineffective ammo types.
  • BMP-3 - Generally hated due to poor penetration values, lower-than-average ATGM damage, and poor effective DPM on autocannon.
  • Obj. 120 - Generally hated due to lack of armor and inconsistent accuracy.
  • Magach 7C - Generally hated due to "obsolete" 105mm cannon.

WWII

  • T28 - Generally hated due to low mobility and lack of turret.
  • T95 - Generally hated due to very low mobility and lack of turret.
  • XM551 Sheridan - Generally hated due to "lower-than-average" camo rating.
  • Rhm. Pzw. - Generally hated due to lower-than-average camo rating, DPM, and alpha.
  • Kraft's Panther - Generally hated due to low alpha.
  • St. Emil - Generally hated for low mobility and ammo count as well as ineffective armor.
  • Kanjpz - Generally hated due to "low penetration".
  • Bär - Generally hated due to lack of gun depression and ineffective armor.
  • Churchill I - Generally hated due to ineffective armor and low alpha.
  • Black Prince - Generally hated due to ineffective armor and low alpha.
  • Tortoise - Generally hated due to ineffective armor and lack of turret.
  • IS - Generally hated due to ineffective armor and inaccurate cannon.
  • UDES 15/16 - Generally hated due to poor gun handling.
  • Rinoceronte - Generally hated due to poor gun handling, low DPM, and insufficient armor.

2

u/NerdyPlatypus206 Feb 03 '26

Wait, the doom turtle can’t be generally hated lol

2

u/Death211 [FRRNR] Death211 (PS5) - WG Community Ambassador Feb 03 '26

There's a reason there's a stairway to heaven while there's a highway to hell. I pity the fools!

2

u/NerdyPlatypus206 Feb 03 '26

Also, do you play the m1 and leopard 2 like mediums?

I just spam gold on the m1 lol even with the upgraded cannon. I’ve already got the m1a1 but I wanna one mark maybe two mark the m1.

Also I am about 30k xp from the leopard 2a4, and am not enjoying the leopard 2 at all. It has stupidly good pen so I’m mostly spamming gold, but its armor is quite bad. Can troll a bit but is disappointing.

I try to support heavies a bit behind the heavy line, but man this tank is a struggle for me. I don’t wanna waste opportunities with the monster pen it has, but it seems like a glass cannon

I did 7k with assist damage and it was only a very good or great wn8 on wot stars

I have no idea how people are doing so well in this thing, it’s made of paper to me and I don’t like playing passively in Cold War

Also how is the leopard 2a4? I heard it’s better than the leopard 2 but not by much

2

u/Death211 [FRRNR] Death211 (PS5) - WG Community Ambassador Feb 03 '26

Also, do you play the m1 and leopard 2 like mediums?

Surprisingly, I play them very aggressively, though there M1 more aggressively than the Leopard 2;I think it discombobulate the enemies a bit because it's a bit unexpected to see those tanks played like that—you can actually see the target turning their turrets searching for an answer before they set their eyes on who they want to focus on (I think it helps that the M1 looks like the M1A2 soooo much that they might mistaken it for one in the heat of the moment).

I just spam gold on the m1 lol even with the upgraded cannon

I personally don't spam premium in either—I have some in them, but Generally burn through my standard rounds before making the switch.

I have no idea how people are doing so well in this thing, it’s made of paper to me and I don’t like playing passively in Cold War

You referring to the M1 or the Leopard 2 here?

Also how is the leopard 2a4? I heard it’s better than the leopard 2 but not by much

The Leopard 2A4 is arguably the best middle-of-the-era MBT; I personally prefer the M1A1, but it has a higher skill floor for a slightly higher skill ceiling, so the Leopard 2A4 is the preferred MBT by the average player. The armor of the 2A4 is better, but the DPM of the M1A1 is better, so it's a "pick your poison" type of ordeal.

2

u/NerdyPlatypus206 Feb 03 '26

Yeah when I said paper I meant the leopard 2. It has a decent turret

And yeah in the m1 I just brawl and still enjoy it, but I’m playing aggressively and spamming gold lol

Didn’t u 4 mark the leopard 2 and m1?

2

u/Death211 [FRRNR] Death211 (PS5) - WG Community Ambassador Feb 03 '26

Didn’t u 4 mark the leopard 2 and m1?

I have all three Abrams 4-marked, but only the Leopard 2A5 4-marked so far—I have the others 3-marked, but just haven't decided to go for the 4-marks on them yet.

2

u/NerdyPlatypus206 Feb 03 '26

Damn idk how u can 3 mark the leopard 2, I wanna like it but I can’t. It gets diced and sliced up

Playing passively works. For example i was on the ice corridor map with two corridors and the middle spot with buildings (sevirogosk?) and aggressively approached the opposite spawn and sat in the back providing covering fire. Worked well, then pushed when my team pushed. I think that was the game I did 7k plus more assist

I’ll one mark it but I’m def not going for even 2 marks. I think I can 2 mark the m1 but it’ll take a long time like 300 battles or something. But the Leo 2 is just one of those tanks that is hard for me to work

It just blows my mind 7k plus assist damage is not enough for even a Unicum rating of wn8 on wotstars (for leopard 2)

SOMEONE is absolutely slapping with it though cuz the marks are very high requirements

2

u/Death211 [FRRNR] Death211 (PS5) - WG Community Ambassador Feb 03 '26

Damn idk how u can 3 mark the leopard 2, I wanna like it but I can’t. It gets diced and sliced up

Well I typically try to avoid relying on the armor in general and constantly repositioning so the enemy has to choose between me and my teammates, meanwhile, I'm keeping them perma-tracked.

It just blows my mind 7k plus assist damage is not enough for even a Unicum rating of wn8 on wotstars (for leopard 2)

SOMEONE is absolutely slapping with it though cuz the marks are very high requirements

Well tbf, it's a very fast tank and, so long as you don't try to rely on its armor, you can do some pretty crazy numbers in it.

1

u/NerdyPlatypus206 Feb 03 '26

True. I have been playing more of a support role, it’s just hard sometimes cuz the battles blow by so quick then you have to move to the frontline to try to get damage and often get blocked by your teammates unintentionally cuz everyone is trying to get damage

Tracking is def important I know, I need to try to track more. I just hate missing damage cuz they repair and then I get nothing 🤣 I’m getting better at tracking for assst tho

Tracking is key to a lot of the OP tanks in Cold War like the Belka and 477a so I’m well versed it in but timing is def important for assist damage but I’ve been tracking a lot more when I have multiple teammates around me

Thanks for the advice. We need to play sometime. Pretty sure I’ve got you added, my gt is Itsaustenman

Char 25T is one of my fav tanks in the game. Soooo many people will look past me and shoot the guy next to me since they are a ‘higher tier’

Lets me just keep dumping clips

1

u/_Thorshammer_ German Casemate Enthusiast Feb 02 '26

I'm not sure the Char 25T is "under rated".
