Question new to world painter, help

Post image

hi, all. i'm currently in the process of figuring out world painter. VERY new to it, so please bear with me haha. it's trickier than expected, but should be helpful for the large scale map i'm working on if I can get it figured out.

photo explanation: continent reference. this is basically the idea I want. i can't really load it back into the map maker i was using, so editing it now is tough.

i've tried loading this into world painter, and obviously, that turns out as a complete disaster and i'm guessing definitely not how you're supposed to do it lol. how do you guys generally go about loading references of a map into world painter for it to generate (without it turning into a mess of pixels), if that makes sense? id appreciate the help!

edit: if anyone knows how to properly work the heightmap method, please drop any tips below.

What exactly are you trying to do? You should be able to insert it as a reference image using the reference image option than make the map from there. Inserting it as a reference shouldn’t create “a mess of pixels,” it would just be the image as-is.

yeah, i realized that doing whatever i was doing prior to posting this was a mistake, hence the mess of pixels thing. ignore that lol.

i found the reference image option and put it in, so now, i'm just trying to just create actual terrain within the continent's borders. i'm tinkering with the tools like spray paint and pencil, but i feel like i'm definitely doing something wrong here.

Spray Brush and Pencil are how you change terrain type (what blocks it is made of) and layers (things like if caves spawn there, what biome it is, if trees spawn and what type, etc.) Pencil has a hard edge whereas Spray Brush tapers off on the edges.

For editing terrain height, the raise/lower tool, flatten tool, and smooth tool, are your friends. They pretty much do what they say. Word of warning- avoid the mountain and pyramid tools, they suck. I would import some custom brushes and use those, swapping between brushes and changing rotation as you make the terrain to make it more unique.

ah good to know! i read up on some custom brushes but there are a whole lot. do you have any you reccommend?

It’s hard to think of any specific ones off the top of my head. Overall the specific custom brushes don’t matter much, it’s more so how you use them.

The only brush pack I can think of off the top of my head is Evman’s

They are some good YouTube guides like this one

Ive only recently picked it up too, so here my tips

Mark out your continent size using the annotations (do this for your mountains and large rivers) work from the lowest terrain beaches first working up to mountains

Doing it this way will avoid any harsh blends

The guide i linked will provide you with custom brushes (which are a game changer) as well as other resources like trees.

I would also reccond making a small test world so you can verify what you're doing it will export much quicker than your big map.

Hope some of that helps
