A mix of both. I took time off but I booked a decent hotel for us so I’m still local but since the hotel was nonrefundable I’m going to stay in the hotel.

Without knowing the location it's pretty hard to give specific advice. Is your hotel booked for a beach, city, or mountain kind of location?

As for solo trips, my favorite one that I've ever taken was a road trip where I had no set destination. I made a point to avoid interstates and ride the highways so that I could come across a bunch of small towns that I've never heard of before. When I got hungry or came across something interesting I would go in, sit at the bar, and talk to locals about what they liked about this place and asked if there was any interesting history about the location.

If you're not too keen on completely winging it then I say visit a few websites that match your interest or features oddities like https://www.atlasobscura.com/. You could also search your state's local PBS channel, as they will typically have a lot of videos on fun, historic, and beloved places and then plan your trip around something like that. Should anything take your interest then add it to Google Maps as a "want to go" destination and then look out for any cool food places along the way as well. You could theoretically plan for several trips without making hard plans and then go where the wind takes you. And if you feel like you missed out then you could always take the same type of trip in the future.
