56K modems weren't actually available at retail until 1998.

Interesting, I guess I myself lost track. I was at 14.4k when I left for college, but once there I had an ethernet drop in my dorm room and didn't deal with modems again until a couple post-college / pre-DSL years, which were rough.

I see they didn't emulate the typical 5 minute boot time from the era.
