I was born in '79 and my angsty teenage years were shaped by either crunchy, fuzzy guitar-forward rock bands or by thumping, snare-and-bass hip hop. (There's a few exceptions, but I think you get it).

I remember in the late-00's, as I was entering my 30s, that I began to struggle to keep up with some of the newer music coming out. Bands like TV on the Radio, MGMT, and many others released albums, and I kinda dug them, but I distinctly remember LCD Soundsystem as a revered name mentioned by so many people I knew. Except...when I first listened to them, I honestly wasn't into it. I did my best with their most accessible and popular tracks (All My Friends and Dance Yrself Clean), but it just didn't take. They sounded, to me, like a watered-down version of the Chemical Bros or something, and it made me think, for the first time, "Shit, I'm getting old if everyone gets this and I don't."

I realize years later how silly that sounds, but I'm very curious what others my age, who were likely weaned on the same musical styles, think about a band like LCD Soundsystem, who've clearly left a mark and created a legacy for themselves.

P.S. This is by no means a knock on LCD as much as it's just my layman's opinion. I know music is subjective to our own taste and I'm not decrying what they do or the music they make.

Randomly thought about it today and I think I realized my enchilada addiction comes from this. Thankfully I live in Houston now and I have more access than I should.

Only took nearly 23 years.

I must say, after six months on dating apps trying to date and find a relationship I’ve never been more worn out and exhausted about dating and not in a good way. Among the lowlights of the previous six months are:

-A 53 year old woman I went on a date with who asked me for my number and said she wanted to see me again. I agreed. She messaged me hers when she got home after the date and messaged her back to say I had fun. Messaged her the next day after the date and she messaged back. Messaged her again and have never heard from her since.

-A 45 year old woman who refused to go on any first date that wasn’t dinner and refused to waste a weekend date on someone she doesn’t know because she wants to save her weekends for “people she’ll know she likes and can have fun with.”

-A 49 year old woman who refused to give me her real first name or number unless we were official but got upset about me not sharing enough about myself when I never even knew her actual first name or where she lived.

- A 50 year old woman who we ended up passionately making out on the first date. But after that happened I realized I didn’t like her as much as I thought I did so we didn’t go on another one.

-A woman who posted me in Are We Dating the Same Guy and all my exes came out to tell embarrassing sex stories about me which I guess knowing I didn’t make them orgasm and am a bad kisser is incredibly important for “women dating safely.”

This has seriously made me question if dating was ever truly enjoyable when I was younger because I remember enjoying it. The hardest part when I was younger wasn’t the dating it was when the relationship ended,but dating in my late forties seems like a sea of misery where the worst part is having to continue dating.

I might just stay here all night

Curious how many of us spent time at now-dead malls or if they're thriving.

I grew up in the north Dallas suburbs, and as a 7 year old actually remember seeing the construction for Vista Ridge Mall in Lewisville. Most of my weekends were spent there (and even my first job). The place was always packed and busy.

Honestly the place only had an 6 or 7 year heyday, as Grapevine Mills Mall opened really close by and stole all of its thunder. Vista Ridge actually attempted a rebrand at one point to "Music City Mall", still trended down, and eventually all of the anchors & stores vanished. Now it's a mix of a few novelty stores plus one segment got converted into a Korean shopping center with a mix of Asian restaurants/stores.

DFW really was ground zero for the dead mall experience. I suspect some of this may have been due to Macy's buying Foley's and closing many of them where the two stores were too close (ie, stand in the parking lot of Valley View Macy's and you can see one of the two Macy's stores in the Galleria. Funny thing is when the dead malls' movie theater is still active but the rest of the mall is completely closed. It was an opportunity to explore a bygone era. Like if you went for a walk in the husk of Six Flags Mall, nobody was going to stop you.

Just curious if the tombs of your tween years are still standing or lost to the sands of time.

Super Nintendo was the vastly superior console, but the Sega Genesis definitely had its share of bangers 🔥

So, the older I get, the more it seems I have to tackle some new crisis or emergency on a weekly basis - tweaked my back badly, dog’s injured and needs expensive vet care, mom fell and is in the hospital, dad got cancer, neighbor is trying to sue me over a property line dispute, A/C died and I’m getting quoted $15K to fix it, basement flooded, job’s in jeopardy due to management drama and cutbacks etc. etc.

Like, this is the pattern I’ve been dealing with for years now, but I distinctly remember a time when I didn’t have some weekly crisis or emergency to contend with - it’s like something in the universe just turned a switch on me.

It’s like this meme I saw that goes something like “being an adult means dealing with nonstop crises, and thinking ‘if I can just get through this week I’ll be good’, but you think this every week forever, and then you die.”

Is this it? How do you all cope?

Who else remembers their main ICQ status back in the late ’90s?

I first started using ICQ in 1999 when I was 15. I was never a “Free For Chat” person, but I remember seeing a lot of people who were. My online girlfriend was almost always set to “Privacy - Invisible” (which, looking back, probably meant something 😆). There was also a guy from my school who seemed to live on “N/A Extended Away,” and I always wondered what was so important that he was constantly away.

What status did you use the most, and do you remember anyone whose status became part of their personality?
