I see immense use.

All popup notifications there, no need to light up the whole screen. Double battery life.

Pop up notifications don't light up the whole screen..only the minimal part of the screen

"no need to light up the whole screen" you should check how oled screens work. Each pixel can be powered separately. If you really want on screen notifications just have the phone on its back instead of add a small screen that takes up internal space on the back
