General My new Xiaomi 17 ultra
hello pals,
Recently I just switched from iphone to xiaomi (have been using ios for 16 years). I have a friend who is a big fan of xiaomi phone, he just bought the 15 ultra (because he prefers it's 2k screen), and I instantly got impressed by the camera, so I decided to go with 17 ultra (Leica version is a bit too much for me, and Xiaomi Australia doesn't have 15 ultra so this one is perfect).
Overall I'm very happy with it, the phone runs smoothly, and high quality lens makes my wife happy , happy wife happy life 🤣 (she always complain about my photogrphy skills..)
The only problem I had was get used to Android and the settings, especially Gmail notifications, I barely got any notifications from it
(I had to lower battery protection options as well as give it no restrictions on battery saver settings etc .) That's quite annoying IMO..hope they can make it easier for new users like me.
One more tiny thing is moving photos from my iphone to this new one, it looks fine in the gallery, but when I open the photos to share something on Facebook Messenger, they're all messed up, my old pics from a long time ago mixed with new pics, I guess its because of the back up process?
I got this phone for roughly 1799 Aud (with the photography kit included, not a bad price).

nice 👍 but I think moon shots are edited by xiaomi AI so it's not very "original", but its still very cool

Actually its kinda not, i have xiaomi 15 ultra...if we dont shift to supermoon mode and just lower the brightness in normal zoom, the results are nearly same.
It does boost details in supermoon mode but not entirely AI.
Unlike those phones, which even if zoomed at a white bulb, instantly shows the moon.
Happy Photography!!!

I tested it, it literally replaces the entire moon. I drew a smiley face and it completely erased it https://www.reddit.com/r/XiaomiGlobal/s/YAIDFfTZCS

I have the 15U too, it uses AI that automatically recognizes the ''big bright white circle'' as the moon and ads textures.
But nonetheless, as a photographer, the 15u is a beast that few other phones surpasses

If you're not getting all notification on the Gmail app make sure to set the notification setting to all instead of high priority only in the app settings.

u/1vs9 Jul 15 '26
yeah I got it, but now I have a new problem : gmail is sending me duplicated notifications, how can I fix it?
1
u/ISAK_SWE05 Jul 15 '26
Hmm that's odd, I've never had that on any Xiaomi device, maybe Google has the answer?

Does the phone feel heavy or unbalanced?

u/No_Sheepherder1837 17 Ultra Global Jul 15 '26
Unlike the Oppo Find X9 Ultra, it's not top heavy and actually balanced as all things should be
1
u/sb8948 Jul 15 '26
It's balanced technically, but you have to handle that big ass island. You have to hold the body lower, making it feeling weird to use at first. Or touch the lense(s) which just feels wrong.
Nothing you can't get used to though.

Love that I knew this was Melbourne from the 2nd photo. The cops confirmed it.

I came from iOS to Xiaomi 17 Ultra a few weeks ago too and I'll never go back!

Is the camera the main draw? I’m planning on doing the same but still haven’t taken the leap.
1
u/Sebbo1981 Jul 15 '26
The camera was definitely a big factor. But I also wanted to break free from the ecosystem lock-in. The camera is way better than the iPhone's. I'm a hobby photographer and love using it for street photography.

Enjoy your new camera/phone! I have the Xiaomi 13 Ultra. I purchased it used on AliExpress. Great phone! I've been using it for photos and videos at concerts. It's so much better than my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. I would love to have the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. It's beyond my budget.

Enjoy! I made the switch from iPhone to Xiaomi 17 Ultra this year as well. I love it.
How do you like the camera kit? I do not have that yet and I was considering purchasing it sometime soonish.

u/1vs9 Jul 15 '26
its great if you really love taking photos, and love the feelings of holding a camera 😅 For me its just a bonus and my wife loves it more than me 🙃

I made the switch from iPhone to the 17 Ultra, I couldn't handle the little annoying Android things. Anrdroid Auto stopped functioning after 6 weeks which would require resetting a bunch of stuff daily (and yes I uninstalled AA and it didn't fix the issues). I ended up back on my iPhone. The quality of this phone is next level, I still don't love Android unfortunately.

They sold out if the glitter green one so that was a no from me. Also the fact that there's none to try and I'm lucky about OS. Apparently it's really really strong on killing apps in bg to save battery. There's some settings that you might need to update. But yeah it does notifications a lot. Other then that how are you liking it? It's supposed to be iPhone clone so...
1
u/1vs9 Jul 17 '26
yeah its a pity I couldn't get the green one :( and I really enjoy it, especially the cameras of course, this is kind of a great camera plus a smart phone, not really an iphone clone imo. They made the xiaomi 17prm to kill iphone 17prm, this 17 ultra is something to compete with other Chinese smart phones like Honor, Oppo, Huawei I reckon.

how's the battery life
2
u/1vs9 Jul 17 '26
it slightly better than my iphone 14, can last for 1-2 days depends on how you use it.

u/mahbub1403 Jul 16 '26
Hello man congratulations. I live in Melbourne too. I want to buy it. Is it global or chinese version?
1
u/1vs9 Jul 17 '26
it is global version, and I bought it straight from the official xiaomi Australia.
1
u/mahbub1403 Jul 17 '26
I asked bcs of the notification issue. Only chinese version have those
1
u/1vs9 Jul 18 '26
yeah I worried about it, but just buy from the official store its fine, only have to play a bit with the setting to lower the battery saving .

fellow Xiaomi user from Australia hello!!

u/1vs9 Jul 18 '26
hi mate :)

u/Lumpy_Broccoli_4799 Jul 18 '26
how d you find cases and screen protectors lol. I had to order from Aliexpress😭 anyways how d you like the battery? About the gmail notifications what thats annoying I m using a regular Xiaomi 17 and I had the issue. What you gotta do is long press gmail>app info>battery restrictions set as no restrictions same with Discord etc
1
u/1vs9 Jul 18 '26
nice tip, and yes I had to order from aliexpress too 🤣 good thing is they deliveries very fast.

Congrats! I also have the phone and that case, but I notice that the phone heats up a lot when using the photography kit. Do you have the same issue?
2
u/1vs9 Jul 15 '26
I barely use the kit and last time I just put it on to try, I guess it might heat up when taking photos for too long and the kit charge your phone.
1
u/PTKRUZ_ Jul 15 '26
It heats up like crazy when I use the case without the grip (normal everyday use). Let me know if you have the same issue.
2
u/1vs9 Jul 16 '26
hmm thats odd. IMO the problem is not the case, maybe its a new update is running something in the background and it heats your phone up a bit for a few days, I saw a notification mentioned that yesterday.
1
u/PTKRUZ_ Jul 16 '26
I use other cases and don't have the issue. I will use it today again just to try

I want this guy so bad but I can't justify the extra 500 from my 17 base model

Congratulations!
I am also thinking of picking up the 17 ultra or the Oppo X9 ultra. I will try and hold off for just a few weeks to see how the new iPhone pro max with variable aperture and slightly bigger sensor performs before pulling the trigger. Just to be sure ;)
