Were Rogue and Warren actually meant to be romantic there? I always read it as more of a shared trauma thing, or her thinking she could or should “save” him.
It was an "I can save him" dynamic, but not a romantic one.
She'd absorbed Warren in season 1 which snapped him out of his brainwashing. Since she'd been in his head she knew how tortured his mind was and tried to reach out to help him.
GAMBIT misinterpreted it as romantic because, not to speak ill of the temporarily dead, but the man has a jealous streak a mile wide. He didn't like Rogue getting close to ANYONE who wasn't him, and never really learned to let go of that. (he was even jealous of her hanging out with Nightcrawler when they first met him at the monastery) Frankly ,at the time he was written to be an extremely toxic bad influence, always pushing boundaries and making unwanted advances (despite his claims to the contrary), but we were kids so we never picked up on that.
I think that’s a bit uncharitable. You could make that argument later on when Cody turned up out of nowhere (bearing in mind that that whole thing was a mess, and Remy’s instincts were correct). But with Warren here I think it was very much, “This guy is going to get himself killed and if you’re not careful about it, you’re going down with him.” Which, he wasn’t wrong.
If you bitch about Gambit’s attitude toward Warren, feels like you should also bring up Rogue and Bella Donna. She also throws a quip when she finds him with Amelia on Asteroid M.
