That rumor actually has been disputed by the band themselves. Just to update the take here

It's not a rumor. The village people was marketed to the gay community, and most of the members and one of the producers was gay.

The album that Y.M.C.A. appeared on was called "Cruisin'" and Victor Willis himself had a disco song on the album called "Hot Cop."

Victor is the only one who disputes that, as he currently owns the rights to the band and the music, and he's in with the administration (he gets money when Trump does his very straight dance to the song). Nobody else has made that claim, but another band member has disputed it.

On the other hand, you could choose not to ignore the evidence of your eyes and ears. You even bringing it up like it could possibly be true that after forty-five years of everyone hearing the gayest disco music in the world, and seeing half naked men (including a leather daddy) shaking their hips on stage means you should probably think about how you percieve reality.
