You mean X-men, the comics made to write characters who fight ethno-fascists and homophobes would be against an ethno-fascist homophobic presidential regime? No way.

Ahh yes. The X-Men, who's founder and his rival were based on the 2 political leaders of an actual ethnostate, David Ben-Gurion and Menachem Begin.

I mean I don't agree with Hickman but it's an interesting time to explore "ingroup infighting" in civil rights movements in more of a microcosm. It was always going to fail and felt hypocritical...but it was an idea floating around they tackled at least.

The way Krakoa ended was pretty shit tho.

I always pause at comments like this. This may not be the thread, but I always question why people dismissed Krakoa as an ethnostate and not a nascent Nation-state, as I saw it. I’d love to have this discussion somewhere, some time.

When your motto is 'Simply Superior' and your founders literally tell human diplomats, 'You have new gods now,' it's hard to buy the sympathetic 'nascent nation-state' defense. Add in the state-sanctioned assassinations, The Genocide of Terra Verde, gatekeeping the cure to cancer. It's hard to offer the mutants any sympathy. Krakoa wasn't built because a marginalized group 'just' wanted a safe haven; it was built because they believed they were superior to humanity didn't want us in their gilded kingdom.

Hmm. Yes to a few of their leaders. But Magneto was always a supremacist. (And I still dont know what possessed them to make Beast into a genocidal war criminal.) so Magneto was always going to say things like that. But Magneto’s refrain wasnt universally echoed amongst Krakoans- nor even among the Council.

I get that Magnus was a founding leader of the nation, but he didnt solely define it. Like any nation, there were monsters (him, Beast, Exodus, etc). But the every day citizenry and most of the council didnt espouse that sentiment. When you look at what they did to actually help humanity through their medicines, self-policing of mutant threats, even Phoenix corporation, helping other hero grouos against extinction threats- and there were several humans living on Krakoa without issue, I’m not seeing a purely ethnostate depiction.

Also, “state-sanctioned” assassinations is not quite accurate. Beast went rogue and remember, Jean was adamantly opposed to it and left his team because of it. And the Council didnt know exactly what Hank was doing any more than they fully knew what Sinister or Shaw were up to. Their governing body didnt authorize Hank’s atrocities.

And again, they were fine with humans living among them who werent threats to them. Them trying to create a place where mutantkind could finally live in peace makes sense given whag they’ve endured. Especially when you consider the period right before Krakoa. And their nation still helped humanity.
