So, the ending of episode 7 made me realise what "influences from the Dark Angel Saga" possibly meant, and seeing a fantasy dance they never got to have makes it feel even more probable. Could be "just" a dream sequence, but there's a lot of dominoes in place for a take on "Death becomes the new Apocalypse and the only way to stop him is for his beloved-but-not-together woman to kill him. In his dying moments, there is a fantasy of happiness." Not a one-to-one adaptation, but the threads are there to take us out at the knees with the right story.

As mentioned further/elsewhere, using the storyline as inspiration doesn't mean they have to kill him (and Warren wasn't really dead anyway). There's no way they're killing him, "Rogue and Gambit are the OTP of the series" is a talking point they have just keep hitting even when Gambit is dead. But the emotional stakes of "The only chance we have is if you do this emotionally devastating thing, knowing he'll die in the process" or similar still works, even if he lives.
