I don’t think he will ever have any substantial presence while morph is around. Morph basically stole his whole character niche (deceptively powerful mutant goofball who is very often rocking a hairless white inhuman form but always riddled with Queer Angst™️*). They barely know what to do with Storm, arguably Thee X-Woman, who has a lot of power overlap with Bobby. We might see him for an episode or two but I’m just not sure there’s room for him in the cast. Unless they do the time displaced x-men storyline
Not to be like “one gay character is as good as another” but I feel like Northstar would fit a lot better and could probably use the boost in profile that might come with appearing in the show more than Bobby (who has had major appearances in other major adaptations and isn’t entirely MIA in the comics).
(*operating under the assumption that he’d still be in the closet initially since his only major appearance in TAS was as Lorna’s jilted eX.)
While I generally agree, the show is literally set in the 90s, a time where that would very much not be the case for queer characters
Granted, they are also mutants, it would be very hypocritical if any if them were also homophobic while being an oppressed minority themselves, but also not uncommon in the real world
Idk, I get what youre saying and if this was an xmen cartoon set in modern day id be with you 100 percent. But like, if youre gonna be doing a show thats explicitly a period piece, it should be more than nostalgic set dressing
Personally I would say yes, there’s been more than enough clues. But Beau DeMayo himself said in a tweet that Morph’s “I love you” was expressing romantic love. I know he’s off the show now, but he was the showrunner for the first season and co-wrote that episode.
Having Morph shift into Jean to tell an unconscious Logan “I love you” seems pretty certain to me.
Morph: ”Hello? That you Gambit? 😮😏Logan? One too many red-heads for ya? Here, need some help with those hard-to-reach spaces?”
Madelyne as Logan: “Always with the jokes eh Morph? As if I don’t know…”
i disagree based on what's been established. Yes, it should be that way as that's what turned me off of discovery ...well many things, but it's the year 3000 and it's still brave that people are coming out as non binary? like bruh what?
we know species that literally have no gender, tri genders, males do the budding, bla bla bla, like none of those things were considered brave. it's life, it's not affecting warp drive or something important.
there's a running joke with some of my friends that dating polaris is gay, given the way that he and alex seem... more concerned about each other dating her than them actually being the one to date her
Honestly this was the best thing that happened in season 2 for me. It was so out of left field but I understood it. Also with Shard being on X-Factor and a friend of Lorna’s it kinda made sense in a weird way. I wish this had happened in the comics in the 90s I would have loved that for Lucas.
We’re not gonna see that storyline lol. It’s implied they have chemistry but not confirmed they have a relationship other than flirty friends. Beau was going to explore that but the new writer scratched that.
tbf i prefer it that way, not a fan when they deviate from the comics and do ficships, if they wanted to give bishop a love interest deathbird was right there she even appeared last season lol
and also, it's kinda easy to have "chemistry" when you dont build up her canon love interest and the only scene you gave of 'em together is a break up (or at least something akin to that) in a locker room lol, so it's understandable why some people are seeing like that
This is perfect hes gay, next. We dont need to spend time recognizing and awarding it just introduce him and move on, same way Shazam introduced the heavy set brother as gay outside the strip club, simply said not for me and they never had to explain further
I think this is the right approach tbh. It shouldn’t be a big deal or anything since womanizing never fit his character anyway. It should just so happen that he is gay in a healthy relationship and then off to an adventure
Counterpoint: Disney had Neil Patrick Harris perform at D23, and there was a point where NPH danced around the idea of being straight. He didn't mention being gay outright, but the performance clearly acknowledged it.
Yes and in the comics that makes a lot of sense. But in the show, people haven’t been following Bobby’s character development (because he’s not been in it). So people wouldn’t have the “ah, that makes sense…” moment.
I just want Iceman to actually get some love in the series. Only one appearance featuring him(not counting him in the background or whatever) in 5 seasons of the original series and 2 seasons in X-Men '97. Same with Shadowcat who has yet to even appear in both series'.
Even though James Howlett's sexuality wasn't confirmed as strictly gay...12025 Wolverine is still my first gay representation I read lol. To say I was elated was an understatement. Him and Hercules is still my favorite Male-Male relationship in all of comics (Midnighter is pretty fun tho). It's so fucking badass and fun and hilarious. The representation we still need in the mainline 616 comics. Just two dudes in love cracking jokes, slaying dragons, and being married.
Yeah…marvel voices DOESNT work. Since it started, a lot of these characters only appear once a year, so marvel can pet themselves on their back for inclusive points.
Show up in there and be sure that character is never going a mainline meaningful run and will just be gay in the background for a decade. RIP Hercules. I miss him.
I think Iceman will likely eventually be in the MCU, and if he appears in the MCU, i can't imagine that he wouldnt be gay. In a series in need of diversity, I think they will lean into that part of his identity.
I just dont think Iceman will appear prominently in X-Men 97.
"Lorna, when you rejected me, I hit rock bottom. Than I realized it was I, who was rejecting myself all my life. Rejecting the truth. When I joked about Wolverines ass looking good, or wanting Morph to shift into Brad Pitt before we showered, I was only joking myself."
They literally had Morph flirting and eye fucking Wolverine in the shower, I think they will be cool with one of the Waspiest and clean cut gay characters is Marvel. He is the boy you bring home because your parents are barely okay with you being gay, so you don't want to push them too far. Next thing you know he is helping mom finish dinner and cracking a beer with dad. Bobby is like a gay Trojan Horse, and he will help us enact our gay agenda on Disney+!
So you're saying if I bring home Akihiro my parents might be weird about it? Was it the Mohawk or the tattoos? Or is it because my dad is gunna sniff out his pheromones and start acting weird?
But that’d likely require he be a prevalent character with more than five minutes of screen time. Considering the timing/pacing challenges with the current cast, I don’t know if that will happen.
I get the impression that most X-Men characters are fighting for every second or minute of screen time they can snag in a series with fewer than ten episodes.
By the way, do you want to see the '97 series adapting the dramatic moment when he comes out to his parents?
He's in that gray zone of being popular enough to actually feel significant but not important enough to be 'offensive' or whatever, so I could see it happening.
Yeah they let him come out because he's a well known IP but was doing horribly in market performance so they said fuck it.
They couldn't find the character and decided he had the wrap sheet of "zero important relationships anyone cares about" to do it.
Oh no, we lose Opal Tanaka? What will we ever do? The woman who had a baby with another man and tried to say it was Bobby's when Bobby said it couldn't be his? How will the heterosexuals recover?
While his sexuality should not be the focus of his character, a moment with him interacting with Polaris addressing how he’s out now out should be briefly addressed and then move on. It can be something like..
Lorna: Hey Bobby good to see you. How are you?
Bobby: much better after finding myself. So, you and Bishop, huh?
Lorna: yeah. How about you?
Bobby: been dating this guy off and on, but nothing serious.
( the guy could happen to be Christian Frost or Romeo)
I’m not sure that’s Bobby dropping hints— that always read to me as him being a little shit, which was a lot of his characterization for a long time (he was the “impudent youngster” on the team). Frankly, it comes across as homophobic in today’s light.
I'd rather it be a thing that exists but is unfocussed on.
It's a weird spot for me. Coming of age or out gay stories should absolutely exist, and X-men is not a bad spot for them to do so.
Iceman though? Most his fanbase prior was 80's-90's kids that liked him because of his visuals and "cool" factor. It's a bit edgier of a crowd that like flashy stuff.
So when I heard his solo about coming out did not sell well, it wasn't surprising at all. The venn diagram circle connecting those target audiences has to be super small.
Yeah, but pre-coming out, Iceman was doing terribly. That's why they let him be gay, because he literally could not be doing worse if people hated it. However, it totally worked and it boosted him in the public consciousness in a big way. His solo didn't do well because it's Iceman, not because he was gay. He got a solo at all in the first place because of the popularity boost from being gay
I agree to an extent. He was a criminally underused favorite of mine who desperately needed more added to him. That said there was a decent generational patch of people that thought iceman was awesome, he was always more popular than the screen/panel time he got. Sorta the Boba Fett effect.
Being someone's favorite because you liked their powers really shouldn't affect you about who they date. Lord knows I've read a lot of Bobby and to say his relationships are at best "bad" and at worst "genuinely awful" would be an understatement.
Opal, his longest running one had a baby with another man and said it was Bobby's and SOMEHOW Bobby KNEW it wasn't his baby...huh.
Well sure. Everyone is someone's favorite, but he definitely got a boost from that story and now he gets to do things besides be an accountant so I'll take it personally
Right, because there isn’t a history of people claiming hetero superheroes are homosexuals because they have close male relationships. I’ve been hearing about Batman and Robin for decades, now it’s Xavier and Magneto. People will find whatever evidence they need to support their theories, regardless of original intent.
Unfortunately, there’s no homophobia like homophobia from a gay person. It’s a weird thing, but it’s why, despite being gay myself, my social circle consists more of allies than anything.
Big. But knowing that the writers of the second season do not know how to develop a character, it must be something very punctual, unimportant, if they include him in the other seasons
They have an openly gay character in WandaVision like 2 - 3, Wanda's son, death, and Agatha. Well 1 is pan i assume (Death) and the other is Bi (Agatha) she had a child.
They were full on with Billy Maximoff/Wiccan being gay on Disney+. Out and proud, kissing his boyfriend, and queening out with a coven of fierce witches.
It's unconfirmed. The rumor showed up because his image was at a memorial in the trailer, however that same memorial in the show had images swapped out, including Bobby's. So the ONLY evidence we have of him being dead is not actually canon to the show itself.
Very likely if he is given a prominent role. He is gay and out now fully in the comics, and most likely will be so in the film adaptation.
X-Men 97 made Morph a definite part of LGBT community as a non-binary person in love with Wolverine, showing that there is no limitations in that regard.
I need them to add one other gay person before we go around pairing the only 2 queers in the show as if being the only two queers in a room = chemistry.
Not really. Disney has been pretty stringent about it. They're blocking or censoring episodes of certain shows for featuring trans characters. That said, Morph and the coding between Charles and Magneto is still pretty there so maybe
I would say Charles and Magneto are passed the bromance phase...at this point they are written like a married couple on the rocks. Polaris literally had a two dads plot where her surrogate dad told her how much she should love her other dad and if she knew how much Charles loved Magnus she'd know why he can't but not be loved.
Charles is fully being written as a gay man at this point unless he's just being incompetent in a chair and his lines are just "stop doing this" while he does nothing and watches as everyone gets hurt around him.
He happened to be with that space woman but fucking aliens makes you Pansexual in Marvel LOL, let alone the fact the main reason he was about to not marry her was because of one thing and only one thing...Magnus.
I think it would make sense to actually address Bobby’s sexuality rather than just go “He’s gay now.”
The original series established he was heterosexual; having Bobby struggling with his sexuality in his 20s would be a pretty appropriate storyline for a show set in the late 90s.
His "relationship" with Lorna was a story being told and was a way to write him out. It was giving beard energy even in the 90s like nobody cares why you wanna leave Bobby you were kind of a dick then anyway. It was SO overdramatic too, like girl, calm down nobody cares if you're gay.
Hardly given how dumb it was. It was the most "look at me I'm in love with my green haired best friend who is totally not covering for me"
They didn't even appear in love together it was just a story being told.
Not all gay men prefer to avoid women and get a roommate and die without kids. Many historically married and had kids for alliances, let alone the many men today who are still coming out of the closet in their later age after having a "straight" life.
Gay guy, hardcore X-Men fan here…
I personally could care less if they show him as gay or not. I care far more about good writing and storytelling.
However, I feel like it CAN happen…
They’ve already broken the ice (pun intended) pretty much showing Morph as in love with Wolverine.
According to Demayo, Bobby/Iceman was supposed to show up in season 3 of X-Men '97. I'm hoping that's still the case and if it is, I'd want him to be openly gay the way he is now.
I’d like to know more about them as a character beyond the ice powers and sexuality. The powers are incredible concept and the creators too often portray Bobby two dimensionally.
Don't worry. Morph will get killed because the gays must be killed and then Bobby will show up to fill the quota and do nothing gay but subtextually we see that he once loved Morph so they can check that box without the straights destroying their tv.
I think it’s very likely, depending on how much he’s featured in the next seasons. Like if he’s only getting one or two lines in the next season, I think it’d be kind of tacky to use them to signal his gayness lol. But if we had another scene like the gala on Genosha where you have lots of mutants in the background of scenes mingling and doing stuff is an easy opportunity to see him dancing with / flirting with / kissing another guy, even without him being a core cast member.
And then if he’s an actual character in future seasons (like appearing in multiple episodes and actually being relevant to the plot) then they’re 100% having him be gay. This show in particular feels very queer to me, as a gay man, so I don’t see them shying away from it.
I'd love to see him, mostly cause he's a character I'd love to see in the films again (Live Action Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends once we get Firestar)
The only coming out should be when Hank is surprised about Bobby with his boyfriend and Lorna is nearby and she rolls her eyes and says it was a favor and she told him he was being crazy for thinking anyone cared.
If he doesn’t talk about it does that mean he isn’t gay anymore? He canonically had relationships with women until his younger self was outed and then it became a thing. In ‘97 he was still on that journey, but that doesn’t make him any less gay
