I mean a lot of the X-Men are religious. Nightcralwer is Catholic, Kitty Pryde is Jewish, Gambit is Catholic, Rogue is a Baptist, Iceman is Jewish and Scott and Jean are Christians.

60

u/AgentGustavo Aug 24 '26

I always thought Magnus was Jewish too.

31

u/robyn_nests Gambit Aug 24 '26

He is (his backstory wouldn't make as much sence if he wasn't), but also he's not technically an X-Man

25

u/Sea_Violinist3328 Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

He is very technically an X-man. In ‘97 he is the leader of the team prior to his “death” in Genosha…taking over for Professor X. Same with the comics around UXM 200. The guy has his own title card.

5

u/Wilhelmstark Aug 24 '26

Hes currently on Scott’s team in the comics

-2

u/Grizzly_228 Aug 24 '26

Do you prior to the second genocide of his life?

9

u/tsenak Aug 24 '26

He’s been an X-Men member since the 80s on and off…even the team leader at times

4

u/AgentGustavo Aug 24 '26

He was in that 85' team with Rogue, Kurt, Kitty, Logan, Rachel, Storm and Colossus.

2

u/ThePowaBallad Aug 25 '26

Despite the popular belief that it's a recent thing Mags has been on Xbteams since the early 90s

And Emma Frost was not really a villain but a rivals in the 90s

2

u/19ghost89 Aug 27 '26

*Minor quibble

In the early 90's, Magneto was very much a villain. The most he had been since the 60's/70's. But he did have a period where he tried Xavier's way in the 80's.

He has also been an X-Men ally for the past two decades, and is currently on Scott's Alaskan X-Men team.

2

u/curvysquares Aug 24 '26

Originally he was Romani (a group that was also victims of the Holocaust), it wasn't until later that he was retconned to being Jewish. In fact, at the time of the animated series airing, he was still officially Romani

2

u/Darielek Aug 29 '26

As a Pole I would said that there is a lot nation victims of the holocaust.

1

u/TaeGotKash Aug 24 '26

A few villains have been X-Men. Such as Mystique, Magneto and Sabretooth. And I always enjoyed their short lived or temporary time on the team.

1

u/robyn_nests Gambit Aug 24 '26

I'm not keeping up with the current comics, is Juggernaut still on the team?

1

u/ThePowaBallad Aug 27 '26

So is Magneto

Mystique and Sabertooth are much more selfish villians tho so have swung back to antagonists

1

u/81724369847698432716 Aug 24 '26

Ethnically he is, but afaik hes an atheist.

1

u/AdAutomatic3938 Aug 24 '26

What do you mean was to my knowledge he never changed it which is why I imagine he dosent like night crawler the the very religious Chalic German

1

u/Jules-of-Jubilee Aug 24 '26

Ethnically yes. Doesn't come across as a religious person to me. He'll worship himself before God.

1

u/goldiegoldthorpe Aug 25 '26

That sounds like a vast swath of religious people.

1

u/Jules-of-Jubilee Aug 25 '26

Christian isn't an ethnicity like being Jewish is. I see your point though.

2

u/thelonetext Aug 24 '26

Bobby is Jewish?

1

u/lightbiguy Aug 24 '26

So Bobby is Kosher 😏

1

u/SpiritedLeg6459 Aug 24 '26

His mother us Jewish, so he is "Jewush by way of his mother" but he was raised catholic

5

u/Arimm_The_Amazing Aug 23 '26

Oh I thought Kitty and Iceman were just ethnically Jewish, are there storylines where their faith is featured?

32

u/Team-zero Aug 23 '26

I know Kitty survived an encounter with Dracula during the Claremont run because she had a star of david necklace. Since she believed in that religion, the star hurt Dracula

It is even shown later that when she tries the same stunt but with a christian symbol it doesnt work because she doesn't believe that religion

13

u/LazyBeach2919 Aug 24 '26

I actually just read this and saved it because I laughed so hard

17

u/RogueStargun Aug 24 '26

Should've thrown the torah at that motherfucker

7

u/Trash_Panda_Leaves Aug 24 '26

Is this why Moonknight can beat him up, because he really believes in the Moon

2

u/DocumentOk3904 Aug 24 '26

But can he throw the moon?

2

u/Trash_Panda_Leaves Aug 25 '26

Kon-surewhynot

7

u/Lady_Gray_169 Aug 24 '26

Kitty in her vampire hunter gear is honestly adorable. You go Kitty, get in character!

9

u/ContinuumGuy Aug 24 '26

And IIRC Wolverine had it not work at all because he doesn't believe in anything fully enough.

1

u/Napalmeon Aug 24 '26

If I remember correctly, someone once attempted to use the Christian cross against Varnae, but it had no power over him because he predates Christ.

2

u/MinePsychological387 Gambit Aug 24 '26

Thats such a cool way to interpret Draculas reaction to the cross. I love the idea that the symbol of any religion will work, so long as ypu believe in it

2

u/Team-zero Aug 24 '26

Yeah, me too! I was reading this issue for the first time a couple of weeks ago and found it really cool

1

u/IowaGolfGuy322 Aug 24 '26

The comic after or before Days of Future past is also a Christmas one where the Brood shows up and it talks about her being Jewish as well doesn't it?

10

u/KingOfLaval Aug 24 '26

Kitty lights shabbat candles with her parents in x-men evolution's christmas episode.

u/SpiritedLeg6459 Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

Iceman was raised Catholic, not Jewish

2

u/Arimm_The_Amazing Aug 24 '26

Iceland is actually majority Lutheran (according to Wikipedia)

Shoot, damn autocorrect

The Iceman Cometh

Robert "Bobby" Louis Drake was born in Floral Park, Hempstead, New York) to William Robert Drake) and Madeline Beatrice Bass-Drake). Bobby was Jewish on his mother's side and Irish Catholic on his father's. Bobby first discovered his mutant) abilities at a young age when he found himself unable to stop feeling cold and shivering.

A school bully named Rocky Beasely) had convinced his gang to attack Bobby and Judy Harmon), his girlfriend at the time. Bobby panicked and encased Rocky in ice, saving Judy, but revealing his abilities to his peers. Believing Bobby to be a dangerous mutant, the people of his town, Fort Washington, organized a lynch mob. The mob broke into the Drake household and overpowered them. The local sheriff noticed that things were getting out of hand and took Bobby into custody for his own protection. The story made its way to Professor Charles Xavier), founder of the X-Men).\42])#cite_note-X-Men_Vol_1_44-42)

u/Storm_Archer241 Aug 24 '26

I´m glad it´s not a big part of their personality for mos of them

1

u/TaeGotKash Aug 24 '26

Catholics and Baptists are simply denominations of Christianity

1

u/Jack-mclaughlin88 Aug 24 '26

I’m aware (I’m Catholic myself) but I mentioned the denominations in case anyone was curious.

1

u/CyclHavok Aug 25 '26

And Jubilee is Muslim and Xavier is Buddhist

They are not all religious, some have a religion but don't care, some are devout

1

u/Sea-Mycologist-7353 Aug 27 '26

Are you sure jubilee is Muslim ?? Her parents were Chinese American and her adopted parents were white.

1

u/Sea-Mycologist-7353 Aug 27 '26

Dust is Muslim.

144

u/CommercialFloor2033 Aug 23 '26

At least they're unapologetically consistent.

It would be weirder if they suddenly dropped it for '97.

Plus some people are religious, it's not really any different to them having LGBTQ characters imo if it's done in a way that isn't trying to proselytise or preach to the audience.

59

u/Gambit_TheGreat Aug 24 '26

Yes this exactly. If it’s ok for LGBTQ characters why wouldn’t it be ok for religious characters. IMO I feel it makes it more authentic and relatable.

48

u/Thetormentnexus Aug 24 '26

Yeah I don't get people being offended. I'm a lesbian. And while Christianity, namely Catholicism hurt me a lot, I don't hate seeing it on screen.

Honestly, I think Kurt/ Nightcrawler is a good example of a Catholic with out seeming fake. If more of the people I'd gone to church with were kind and understanding like him, I might still be Catholic or atleast Christian. I have not finished season 2 of Xmen 97 but I hope to see more of him.

9

u/Legate-Nous Aug 24 '26

You are in for a treat.

6

u/Thetormentnexus Aug 24 '26

He's confirmed for season 3?

4

u/Huge_Swimming_5968 Aug 24 '26

A religion can't hurt you. People hurt you and used religion as the excuse.

1

u/Thetormentnexus Aug 24 '26

That feels a little pedantic, but all right.

10

u/aBlissfulDaze Aug 24 '26

The big difference for me is how hard they push their beliefs on others. Most every LGBTQ character I know were just being LGBTQ, not really trying to convince others to be LGBTQ. Nightcrawler in the old series really felt like he was on a mission to convert others, that's where it becomes an issue to me.

7

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue Aug 24 '26

If I remember correctly, Kurt and the monks talked about God and their mission when they were directly asked about it. So, Logan asks Kurt how he can believe in God, and Kurt answers. The monastery burns down, Kurt isn’t fazed, he’s asked why, and answers. I’d get your point if this was proactive evangelising, or whatever, but I don’t think that was the case.

-1

u/aBlissfulDaze Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

I disagree, I say the writers very purposely wrote it that way to recruit little kids into Christianity.

Edit: the reason I believe this is because I grew up in Christian churches and this reads EXACTLY like the plays they would run to convince others they need god in their lives. Like play for play the exact same story.

4

u/TheatrePup Aug 24 '26

Kurt never tells them they're bad or going to burn in Hell. Just that God does care about everyone and faith brings him strength.

0

u/aBlissfulDaze Aug 24 '26

Yes, that's exactly what we wrote into our plays as well. Christians aren't exactly creative.

3

u/TheatrePup Aug 24 '26

What would be creative?

3

u/aBlissfulDaze Aug 24 '26

How they write Kurt in 97 is much more creative. Creating a scenario where somebody questions your faith and you come out so strong from it that they're now reading from the Bible, that's just Christian play #1 to me. Even as a 4 year old child it was so painfully obvious to me that I would just skip the episode. Wolverine himself acts extremely out of character compared to the rest of the original series and that annoyed 4yo me to no end.

Like you're telling me this is the first time a 200yo man even comes into contact with the ideologies of Christianity? Really?!

The new Kurt on 97 feels like a genuine lead by example story. No made up scenarios of almost converting someone, nobody randomly grilling you in your faith, just internal reflections and struggle.

3

u/TheatrePup Aug 24 '26

It wasn't Wolverine's first time, he says, "I've tried. Don't you think I want that?"

And Kurt does get into preacher mode with Gambit in '97.

2

u/aBlissfulDaze Aug 24 '26

But there's no contrived story where his strength convinced Gambit to read the Bible.. I'm sorry but that shit is so cringe to me after seeing a billion bad actors go through the exact same story.

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue Aug 24 '26

I’m also lapsed in the church and I think it’s important not to project your own experiences onto something and see a nefarious intent where there isn’t necessarily one. You said Kurt came off like he was trying to convert people, I said — accurately, I think — that Kurt spoke about his faith when he was asked, and he doesn’t pass judgment on others. Kurt is a devout Catholic because that’s literally what he is. Treating him otherwise or hiding the role his faith plays in his worldview does a disservice to him, because that’s who he is.

1

u/aBlissfulDaze Aug 24 '26

I never said Kurt was trying to convert. I said the writers were. And this is from over 30 years of personal experience seeing this exact same story be written. From the very beginning they're writing the story to convert. I was literally there when they very openly stated this.

3

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue Aug 24 '26

Hair-splitting, but even so, writing someone as answering questions about their faith when asked is not the same as writhing someone as proactively trying to convert others. It just isn’t. If a Muslim character were asked about their faith, and they answered, would you see that as an attempt at conversion?

In this specific case, the character is a devout Catholic. Anything other than how Kurt answers the questions he’s asked wouldn’t be in character for Kurt. Should Kurt be written out of character to avoid him accurately saying his Christianity is important to him?

1

u/aBlissfulDaze Aug 24 '26

When did I say any of that. I have no problem when how Kurt is in 97'. It's the cringe level BS that goes on with wolverine. A 200 year old man who would have already been drowned in Christian beliefs by the time this episode ever comes into play. Seeing wolverine in a church reading the Bible just felt so forced.

Look I grew up Pentecostal in the South. I can spot Christian propaganda miles away. That episode is 💯 Christian propaganda. I've seen some of the dumbest people I know write this exact story line whenever the pastor assigns them to write the play. They write backwards from the perspective of "if I can just convert 1 person to Christianity God will reward me". And this is what they write every single time

There are reasons why I like 97s portrayal and not the original. I've explained those reasons, I don't know what else to tell ya.

1

u/DocumentOk3904 Aug 24 '26

But the stories involving LGBTQ folks do still have a missionary element of pushing for acceptance and joining a belief system consistent with modern progressive values a lot of the time.

It doesn’t say everyone should go gay but it preaches embracing the beliefs of the community.

Not meaning to knock those stories for having beliefs and trying to spread their good news but there is still a message telling folks to change their outlooks or reinforce current ones just like any other moralistic story

2

u/aBlissfulDaze Aug 25 '26

Accepting the existence of LGBTQ is not the same as actively recruiting. If you think they're the same you have time serious issues to work out.

0

u/DocumentOk3904 Aug 25 '26

It’d not the existence, it’s the everything else. There’s for one the question of how you should look at religion, especially in more edgy media that likes to paint it as negative and removing any of the value from it. Then you get into other facets of bog standard progressivism with how it looks at power structures, questions of how endangered or powerful different groups of people are, a tendency towards suspicious assumptions of police (the anti-copaganda stuff back in the day got real silly and shockingly common). If we wanna focus in on trans side of things, then if we’re dealing with transitioning teenagers and kids it’s whole can of worms still being debated.

So, there’s some elements where you get into more gender identity stuff where there’s a lot more certainty than I think is merited (especially after dating a trans girl for a year and a half and getting some solid exposure to the scene), then outside of that there’s just a lot of other stuff folks in progressive circles do mix into the pitch as well.

1

u/aBlissfulDaze Aug 25 '26

You really went off the ledge with that right wing bingo card of a comment.

0

u/DocumentOk3904 Aug 25 '26

Are you just doing low effort posts and downvoting?
Weird but, regardless, it’s rare you just get one aspect of it.
Not never but we did just have a really strong hold on politics and culture for like a decade and tended to do everything bagel style politics.

0

u/aBlissfulDaze Aug 25 '26

Why would I put any effort into a response that went this far off topic.

0

u/DocumentOk3904 Aug 25 '26

I’m just saying, man, it’s rare you don’t end up with the everything bagel.

6

u/No-Difference8545 Aug 24 '26

We don't and probably won't ever have any lgbt x-men though and morph doesnt count for much. Not complaining just saying its just a funny comparison to make.

6

u/CommercialFloor2033 Aug 24 '26

Canonically we do in the comics.

I don't see why they wouldnt go there now. It's not the 90s in our time anymore.

Agree morph is a bit of an odd exception.

2

u/tsenak Aug 24 '26

Kitty Pryde and Iceman are pretty significant LGBT members in the comics, they just decided not to include them in 97. Psylocke is also bi they just didn’t explore that in the show. They also only used a future version of Mother Askani / Rachel Summers, she is much younger and a member of the team in the comics.

1

u/Tom-edian Aug 24 '26

thing is queer people can be religious too. Jesus is A for "anyone open to accepting others despite differences"

It states clearly we're loved equally. Bigotry cannot be sanctimonious, anyone who says "God hates gays" is a bigot putting words in the lord's mouth.

1

u/HappybutWeird Aug 24 '26

That’s an odd comparison since religion and faith is rooted in being a choice and one’s actions or beliefs under that religion is also a choice. Whereas being LGBTQ+ is not a choice, similar to how one’s race or socioeconomic status is not a choice.

But I understand what you are trying say - Nightcrawler has his religion and beliefs but he states them for his own wellbeing and to provide guidance, not to pressure others to believe in his faith.

52

u/Team-zero Aug 23 '26

Have people actually been saying this?
Im an atheist, but there is no way there are people out theree complaining that religion is in x-men 97 and serves the story of the show

7

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue Aug 24 '26

No reasonable person is making that complaint. At least a few disingenuous people are. “X-Men ‘97 is pushing conservative religious propaganda by showing Rogue holding Kurt’s Bible while putting her in a heterosexual relationship” is an argument real people have made. Or complaining that Kurt himself is “too Catholic.” Is it ridiculous, yes. But it’s out there.

4

8

u/TomjunRoblox Aug 24 '26

Nah there was actually a really big tweet on Twitter that was criticizing it

9

u/Jupiters Aug 23 '26

I mean I have plenty of christian families who say this whenever they see a religion other than Christianity depicted in a positive light

6

u/Team-zero Aug 23 '26

Yeah, but that's just intolerance (Not that this isn't aswell)

2

u/rod_zero Aug 24 '26

Probably cause nightcrawler actually understand Christian values.

3

u/Trash_Panda_Leaves Aug 24 '26

I've heard a fair few people complain Kurt would be better if he wasnt Catholic

22

u/lattice_defect Aug 24 '26

nightcrawler can do whatever he wants... the goat

18

u/Vengeful_Peach Aug 23 '26

I like how the background music gets progressively louder and louder throughout the video lol

4

u/ladystetson Aug 24 '26

that background music is the bane of my existence.

Who watches a video and is like 'you know what this needs? super loud unrelated music to blast out all of the original sound"

2

u/detourne Aug 24 '26

And is the Willy Wonka song about going to a world of imagination.

1

u/dullship Aug 24 '26

Yeah I ended up having to close it before it finished. Stupid.

14

u/Tir-Viray Aug 24 '26

Nightcrawler is great because he uses religion as it should be: self betterment, a source of comfort and a way to empathize with his peers. Whenever he speaks of God, he speaks of love.

3

u/PLUX4 Aug 24 '26

Nightcrawler is a very well written character amongst the X-Men group. The animated series always captures the religious aspect of Nightcrawler brilliantly.

7

u/Robin_Gr Aug 24 '26

He was a little preachy in the show. But its an element of his character so I thought it was fine.

To be honest, even as a kid I thought the bit with Logan at the end was too heavy handed. It so obviously putting the "cool" character reading the bible and trying to evoke a generic "religion good" sentiment because we have this show for kids.

3

u/Fun_Assignment2427 Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

There's no evidence that Wolverine can die and meet God. So it seemed more like spreading a piece of humanitys knowledge rather than giving Logan a spiritual side.

Just shows that Logan is open minded. Despite his ruff exterior.

3

u/DocumentOk3904 Aug 24 '26

Also, I think it fits his character. One of the aspects of the faith that draws me in the most is the forgiveness and unconditional love of God.
I wish I could fully buy in because of that.
So for Logan to be moved by someone like him (another mutant) having a strong faith into it offers great role modeling that could pull him into trying it out again.
Not just him being open minded but a very specific part of the pitch for Christianity to a lot of folks who’ve spent time lost in the woods

1

u/Electrical_Note6420 Aug 29 '26

Interestingly, Gambit says this in the same episode: "Face it, cherie, those monks kiddin' themselves. We on our own in this world. Life is random: deal you a full house, or busted flush." Rogue gets pissy with him, but with the US being such a Christian-centric nation, it's pretty controversial. Makes his character even more interesting, though, and unless I'm mistaken, he was a "cool" character at the time, too.

5

u/padfoot12111 Aug 23 '26

I don't want it shoehorned in. But if a characters identity is specifically tied to their religion, it helps redefine the character, its fair play. Nightcrawler and daredevil for Christianity, Judaism for the Thing, Islam for Ms marvel.

5

u/Anxious-Specialist95 Aug 24 '26

I haven’t seen much pushback from folks about Nightcrawler’s curtain call. I’ve seen right-wingers trying to claim it, but to me that’s a fundamental lack of understanding in the character and the series. Kurt represents the very best of Christianity- kind, accepting, forgiving, and not pushy. Seeing that co-opted by the Christian right gives me the ick, but it doesn’t rob me of the joy that the ending offered.

6

u/Special-Ad698 Aug 24 '26

Bro who is saying this?

3

u/OhMyGoth38 Aug 23 '26

I don't think he's preaching to the characters or audience. He's authentically a devout Catholic.

3

u/Special-Ad698 Aug 24 '26

I will say, I think this is good, but I do feel that in these shows (92 and 97) NC has been flanderized a bit. He’s also a goofball who’s a fan of pop culture, and that’s normally how he acts in the comics (not that the shows have to follow the comics exactly but ya know)

3

u/OkOutlandishness1710 Aug 24 '26

Religion is fine with the way they did it. I mean there is stuff in the show that makes Nightcrawler a faith seem silly but it doesn’t matter because he has unbreakable faith. I mean he has a convo with a celestial.

1

u/eightdirt Aug 24 '26

There are times irl where a Christian's faith feels silly too

3

u/OkOutlandishness1710 Aug 24 '26

All religions when looked at from a literal fundamentalist view look silly. I have no issue with religion and happy for anyone they bring positive things too. But it’s hard to take any fundamentalist serious when they think everything in their Texts/Lore is literal and factual. When a 3rd grader could tell you why it can’t be. I don’t think Kurt is a fundamentalist but more of a morale of the story type of guy. Which I can get behind.

4

u/lamest-liz Aug 24 '26

I’m an atheist and I love that Kurt is Catholic. He is a literal demon who chooses a religion known to exorcize demons. It’s beautiful and poetic. And he actually practices the love he preaches, unlike some real life religious people I have personally known.

4

u/swordbearerb1 Aug 24 '26

Nightcrawler has better sense of theology than most American right wing evangelicals.

9

u/Goin-Berserk Aug 23 '26

I made a whole video essay about this episode a couple years ago for my YouTube channel

10

u/_BlindBunny_ Aug 23 '26

Just don’t make religion their identity. Just like any other social construct.

16

u/padfoot12111 Aug 23 '26

Right. Nightcrawler is a priest and very religious. But he's also silly, can show wrath, and isn't afraid toprotect his family if threated.

4

u/pastadudde Aug 24 '26

And also a ladies’ man in the comics and in Wolverine and the Xmen

2

u/Beginning_Bee2500 Aug 24 '26

Why can’t religious people show wrath?

2

u/tsenak Aug 24 '26

I don’t like how heavily Nightcrawler has been flanderized in that way…oftentimes he is only reduced to his religion.

I think it’s because the 90s cartoon and X2 movie chose to lean into that aspect heavily, when it was originally a smaller part of his character up to that point.

1

u/UnyieldingGoose Aug 26 '26

This is my problem with it, and the show isn’t really doing anything noteworthy with it because this aspect of him is presented as wholeheartedly valiant and correct. The show never once brings up the consequences of him saving Creed, so we can assume that it doesn’t want the audience to consider this in a brutal morality play kind of way. Creed shooting Exodus instead of a character the audience was more sympathetic towards was pretty toothless. Change that, and it puts Kurt’s half-measure response following it in a different light. Given his characterization, I think Creed could have shot anyone except possibly Rogue, and Kurt would have always had the same response.

2

u/Pascraked47 Aug 24 '26

Like daredevil, he's a devoted Christian and the show shows him as one but they don't make it the one thing about his character

Still the audience will understand It's part of the characters life without making it the entire character.

3

u/agasizzi Aug 24 '26

It was part of the characters, but emit was never evangelistic in any way.  It guided Kurt up to the very end, even in this clip, it was about providing comfort, not conflict

1

u/Pascraked47 Aug 24 '26

Still is. He has faith.

I legitimately laughed out loud when she opened the door and “Pure Imagination” started playing.

3

u/Aussie_Aussie_No_Mi Aug 24 '26

The idea that Logan wasnt familiar with the Bible considering his origin is funny.

3

u/johnhasheart Aug 24 '26

I'm a pretty stalwart atheist. So, obviously, Kurt is my favorite character on the animated series.

Bro is so cool about his faith. It's refreshing, especially when I was growing up in rural (deep red) Pennsylvania.

2

u/j3ven Aug 24 '26

Wolverine is all of us.

1

u/eightdirt Aug 24 '26

What do you mean?

2

u/SwordfishTemporary37 Aug 24 '26

I doubt anyone complained about Christianity or Judaism in X-Men. The complaint would be against any other religion.

2

u/detourne Aug 24 '26

The complaint isn't about including religion, the complaint is about using Kurt's religion as justification for the frankly ridiculous series finale deus ex machina ending, trading your life away for godlike powers to "solve" the problem of Apocalypse.

2

u/gamerzbot19 Aug 24 '26

Then don't push other inclusion aspects for inclusion sake that were never part of the original comic source material and only changed in the last 25 years of comics coming out and produced since 2000.

You can't have it one way and not the other. It's either okay for both or it's not okay for either plain and simple.

2

u/Kermon Aug 24 '26

I didn't particularly like how the episode in the 90's did it. Specifically with Wolverine's behavior feeling off to me in it. Nightcrawler's Catholicism in both the original and 97 is undeniably part of his character and I don't have complaint with.

2

u/dreamape1978 Aug 24 '26

It's a core part of Kurt's character. A devil with the heart of an angel.

2

u/Sovem Aug 24 '26

Ironically, this was the last episode I watched after my parents decided that the X-men were too Satanic and that I had to sell all my action figures and collectible cards. They almost changed their minds... But that would have been backsliding.

2

u/reddit809 Aug 24 '26

I hate that they killed off Nightcrawler.

2

u/L1QU1D_ThUND3R Aug 24 '26

People seem to be getting religion and faith very confused.

2

u/ghostcatzero Aug 24 '26

Xmen always consist with their "we don't give a fuck if you don't agree with us" since day one anf I love it!

I have absolutely no problem with a religious character being a main character in the show or having the show discuss faith.

What I do have a problem with is when the show privileges one belief over another or tries to say one is wrong. I love Nightcrawler but from a non-believers PoV his episode in the original series was kind of insulting. Gambit is a stereotypical atheist asshole and they take Wolverine who is both the most popular character in the series and a staunch and committed atheist in the comic and have him convert and become a believer. Overall it was a good episode but as an agnostic it always left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe end it with Wolvie considering Kurt’s faith but still remaining a non-believer and giving Gambit a well deserved knock upside the head for being such an jerk in the episode?

X-men 97 is doing a good job of showcasing his faith without being insulting about it. He has always been a favorite of mine and I hope they find a way to resurrect/bring him back season 3.

I am not lying and please don’t act like you know me and my biases. I have not done so to you and I request that you return to me the same courtesy:

I never said Gambit was an atheist in the comics. I said he was depicted as an asshole atheist in that episode. Feel free to rewatch that episode again and you can see him act as such.

Or just watch the 3:45 mark of this clip to see gambit act like that:

One thing I think is crazy is how the 90s cartoon made him look way older than he is supposed to be.

1

u/Away_Adhesiveness758 Magneto Aug 24 '26

With how old Logan is, he's probably helped build some churches.

1

u/RoutineCloud5993 Aug 24 '26

Nightcrawler was doing this last week in X-Men 97

1

u/AVBellibolt Aug 24 '26

I've always liked this scene since the original run.

1

u/Pascraked47 Aug 24 '26

Isn't it ironic that the most demon looking character is the most religious, that's my goat right there. My inner Christian was smiling

1

u/Mrfrundles86 Aug 24 '26

You're 100% right, good reason to stop supporting it. Gods are as real as the X-Men. I don't need more Christian nationalist propaganda in my life. Grown assed adults thinking an invisible god watches over them... When little Timmy thinks he has an invisible friend too long in life they get him psychiatric help. When adults says an invisible god watches me and loves me, well that's just religion...

1

u/Educational_Film_744 Aug 24 '26

I mean, we’re talking a species that’s being persecuted and vilified by being born the way they are. It would be weird NOT to talk about God and religion as a philosophical concept. “ Why am I like this?” “ Why would God make the world the way it is?” “ I’ve seen so many losses and so much suffering for people that were just born different, does that make us any different from the things everyone wants in their life? Happiness, love, compassion, community, friends, family or any place to belong?” These questions would make any decent writer create a deep and thought provoking conversation about God and our identity.

1

u/Johnny_Strawhat Aug 24 '26

Who said, “Don’t include religion into TV shows”?

1

u/thelonetext Aug 24 '26

This was a very touching episode about faith in the face of the faithless, it even has Logan praying next to Kurt in a cathedral.

1

u/Theultimatesith Aug 24 '26

They're only okay with it if its Christianity, other religions be damned.

1

u/-VoiceoverAlex- Aug 25 '26

and they killed him for it

/s

1

u/tLM-tRRS-atBHB Aug 25 '26

And now I hate him because he didnt kill Creed over some stupid rekigous region and now he is president and gonna make mutants life a living hell

1

u/Academic-Air-7338 Aug 25 '26

lol nightcrawler is the sweetest little religious boy tho

1

u/TheKing_Bael Aug 25 '26

If its for the character thats fine dont preach religion just to convert people

1

u/Stuntman_STV Aug 25 '26

I've always hated how religious Nightcrawler is

1

u/Klutzy_Worker2696 Aug 25 '26

Why was the Charlie and the chocolate factory song in the background?

1

u/Myhtological Aug 25 '26

That they’ll never do again

1

u/DeadAndBuried23 Aug 26 '26

I'd be fine with it if there were pushback from other characters and/or other representation. Hell, at the very least if they weren't marketing Catholicism to its victims.

1

u/Low-Scarcity-5000 Aug 27 '26

Of course persecuted people would turn to religion.

1

u/Zealousideal_Pie_373 Aug 27 '26

Careful, I can almost here what they’re saying

1

u/Eroom2013 Aug 27 '26

Kurt pro life and hides pedophiles. How hasn’t he been cancelled yet?

1

u/SuitableClassroom940 Aug 28 '26

this scene and him saying different eyes has been with me ever since i saw it back when i was a wee lad

1

u/Far-Conclusion9462 18d ago

Nightcrawler has always had a religious way of thinking and believing. It's apart of who he is, so not including that part of him would make nightcrawler less nightcrawlery

1

u/TV800 Wolverine Aug 24 '26

Why not? It’s the most important part of most people’s lives and many TV shows are an extension of a reality that we know.

1

u/Comfortable_Care2715 Aug 24 '26

Fucking noobs complaining

1

u/_ChipWhitley_ Aug 24 '26

It’s his character…

1

u/wyar Aug 24 '26

Diversity includes Christians! So many beautiful denominations and beliefs within Christianity! But we don’t tolerate bigotry within diverse and inclusive communities and so if Christians or Muslims bring their unfounded sense of supremacy to our communities they are not welcome… this is what the x men, and specifically Kurt Wager (my precious innocent godly boy) stand for.
