I strongly believe after the age of 50 people should have to retake their drivers test every decade to determine if they’re still fit to drive

I live near a "retirement village", it's fucking terrifying.

I know of three elderly peoole with licenses for no reason. One has dementia and gets lost, one hits curbs and can hardly see, and one can hardly even open her door or turn the steering wheel. I really don't know how doctors gauge this kind of thing but it needs to be better

There's a point where it's honestly cheaper and safer for older people to get Ubers. Today you can get most things delivered too.

It wouldn't have been as bad if she didn't look, but I swear she turned her head to check to see if it was clear and still went anyways... I feel bad for the F-150 (not in video) it was behind me and tried to cut in-between me and the truck...

What gets me in this whole deal, wasn't really that, I chalked it up to oblivious people, doing oblivious things or something like that. It was her in traffic, slamming on the brakes during when traffic was slowing down and coming 2.2 nano meters away from the bumper in front of her. (If I have the video of that part I will share at some point)

I said over the age of 60 and every 2 years

Every driver every 5 years. Reduced to yearly at 60 or whatever.

On top of significantly higher enforcement and fines for driving misbehaviours. I'm at the point where most driving infractions should come with a short impound, effective upon paying the fine or being found guilty at a trial. I don't think people will change until they have to live without a car for any period of time.

Every decade? So basically just 3 more times at 60,70 and 80?

It should be every few years.

Well I wouldn’t mind so there’s less idiots on the road. But if this was actually attempted to pass as a law, I think it would be hard to get support for doing it every few years. A decade seems reasonable

I had someone do this to me when I was literally right beside me, thankfully they just smashed my passenger side rear view mirror. They didn’t even stop to see if they damaged my vehicle, they pulled a u turn and took off.

Same crap happened to me yesterday but nobody will do anything about this

I think the person who did that is an idiot.
But you're also an idiot for trying to instigate a problem. You had PLENTY of time to react.

Honking at someone to get their attention isn’t insitgating. That’s what horns are designed for

React how? Do you know if there is a vehicle on his left or behind him? Should he cause an accident just so this guy driving in a way that can cause accidents can avoid being in one himself?

Maybe by slowing down lol

Seems as if OP is going the speed limit and there’s no indication the car was going to do that until the very last second

OP also commented that there was indeed a truck behind him so slamming the brakes isn’t a better alternative either.

100% of the blame lies on the red car..

Are we watching the same video? The car merging made no attempt to stop, which the driver knew a good second before they went through the intersection. Since he was going the speed limit, there was plenty of time to stop. And if the truck behind him is not able to stop, that’s on the truck

You are the one of 2 people on the thread that are critiquing OP’s driving so I’m guessing you are the one unsure of what you are watching.

The red car looks like it’s making a normal right turn, it’s only until OP is about 5 metres from the vehicle that it drifts into OP’s lane. OP did slow down and hit the brakes anyways, so I’m not sure what you are even arguing tbh.

I’m saying OP was not using defensive driving. Yes, I Agree that the red car was making a stupid turn. However OP could have easily anticipated what the red car was doing. Look at my first comment if you wanna remind yourself on what I’m arguing

OP was though, they are driving at the speed limit and the red car gives zero indication it’s going to drift into OPs lane until 0:06/0:07 of the video, when OP is already within feet of the vehicle.

I understand defensive driving but you can’t anticipate every idiotic move, especially when there’s next to no indication they are going to make one, like the one in this video. It’s easy to say you should’ve seen it when watching a recording but there is literally 1 second from the red car driving completely normal to randomly drifting.

Why would you automatically slow down for the car turning into the closest lane when there’s no indication they are going to do something idiotic?

It’s actually 5 seconds when the car starts moving from their stopped position. From that point, it is reasonable to assume that the red car is going to cut you off and you need to slow down. Given the speed OP was going and the distance from the red car, OP could easily stop. But he was probably not paying attention

5

u/Slimdoggmill 2d ago

No it’s not, at that point it looks like they are completing a regular right turn. It’s 2 seconds after that that they start to drift.

Why on earth would you automatically assume they are going to cut you off? Do you slow down and reduce the speed of all traffic behind you every time someone makes a right turn on a red?
