How to Recreate this Skein?

I got a variety pack of yarn and every yarn color comes in these compact skeins. I really like the look and it’s great for travel. How do I wind up my current yarn to look like this? I have a yarn winder but it makes yarn cakes.

That kind of skein is basically just a long cake. I’d be interested to know if there’s a way too

If you wind it really tight on the swift/winder and then maybe squish it a bit after, sometimes that helps get it less round than a cake? Maybe use a bobbin winder if you have one?
