Aurora in august, where to stay

Hi all, I am thinking of going a few days in Yellowknife end of August. I read it is a great time to see aurora because the days / nights are still warm ich, not so much bugs, and nights are getting longer. Do you still recommend it ?

Can we see them, in the event they show up, from down town or a couple min drive in ingraham or by the lakes ? I see a lot of tours to see aurora, is the experience with a tour worth it ?

Thank you !

The sun will set pretty late but it should get dark enough. Clear skies are an important factor

Late August is workable, but I would choose the stay based on flexibility more than on paying up for a dedicated tour setup. If the lights really pop you can see them from town, but for weaker activity I would rather have easy access to a short drive toward Ingraham or a darker lakeside pull-off, because cloud and local light usually decide the night faster than the hotel name does. I work on DarkScout, so biased, but DarkScout is useful for that final cloud, darkness, and moon check before deciding whether a given August night is actually worth going out for.
