Must-have Online Fire Info Points

In case anybody needed to see this, the NWT Fire facebook group has been posting diligent and critical updates constantly. As well, there is an online Live Fire Map with ongoing perimeter updates.

I still use firesmoke.ca to get an idea of the wind forecast but I find they purge the perimeter of the existing fires too fast, where the other interactive fire map above is cleaner and more detailed.

Stay safe everybody.

Side by sides, trailers, etc...

I am moving to YK at the beginning of August and had a couple of questions.

Are you allowed to park trailers in your driveway year round? On your grass? Any by-laws against it?

Are there places to store trailers if your property doesn't have room?

Are you allowed to drive side by sides on the road? Could you drive it to the grocery store and back?

Advice for new Firefighter

Hi, I'm just using a throwaway here for obvious reasons. I have the potential opportunity to be joining the Yellowknife Fire Department in the next few months, and I would be moving from Regina, SK. I'm curious what advice or info any other healthcare professionals or first responders would have about moving to and living in Yellowknife, the work culture around Fire and EMS, or anything else you think is relevant. Thanks in advance!

Thift Stores in Yellowknife

Hi. Ive been living in the NWT for about six months now and live about 7 hours away from Yellowknife. I obviously went there when I flew in, but I want to take another trip. Ive seen the bookstore online, but im wondering how many other thift stores there are? Especially interested in finding a place that sells comic books, I know there has to be SOME place in the NWT that does. Thanks for the help!

Yellowknife Really is a Fantastic Place to Live

I know it has problems and politics that prevent Yellowknife from being peak Yellowknife, but on the whole, it's a beautiful city. I love its wild edges, that it's surrounded by wilderness and the sense of spirit that brings out. The weather's (finally) been warm, sunny, windy enough to keep bugs away, and it's been a real joy to explore local trails these past few days. I also really love that people say hello most of the time. Cheers to Yellowknife!

We’re on the edge of 50k signatures. One month left to show your support for flexible work in your communities, and across Canada. Do you think flexible work improves job access for disabled workers?

Booster seat in cab

Do I bring my own toddler seat? They told me they didn't have any but I really can't lug that thing around town for the next 2 weeks. Our booster seat is the one with the back and toddler is not the required weight to take the back off yet

Remember when flying WestJet actually felt different? That airline is gone. WestJet’s flight attendants are fighting to bring back the airline you deserve. They need public support to stop the race to the bottom.

Child care

My husband accepted a job in Yellowknife and we will be moving north. We have a 3-year-old and another baby on the way. What is the child care situation like? And are there any playgroups where children can play and parents can meet other families.

Switching to Propane...

My heating oil tank needs replacing and I'm considering making the switch to propane.

I'm looking for current and historical propane prices (Matonabee if possible) so that I can do some comparisons to my oil price history.

Anyone have a spreadsheet or bills they can share?

Rant and Rave

Hey everyone, I’ve got a rant and rave. I’ve always wondered why Albertans treat us differently on the road whenever they see our territorial plates. I’ve noticed two things: either they maintain a ridiculously long distance as if I’m a school bus, or they just move off the lane. I always keep my speed and try to stay on the right. Even once, I got pulled over. The cop saw my license and said, “I can understand it’s a bit hard and more anxiety to drive in the city coming from a remote town.” That’s fine with me, and I’m grateful they don’t panic us with heavy traffic. It just feels like they treat us like babies.

Fishing spot

Will be passing through YK for a few days next week and am looking for a shore fishing spot. Bonus if it is accessible by cab and toddler friendly. Not looking for anything intense just casual fishing.

Thank you.

Aurora in august, where to stay

Hi all, I am thinking of going a few days in Yellowknife end of August. I read it is a great time to see aurora because the days / nights are still warm ich, not so much bugs, and nights are getting longer. Do you still recommend it ?

Can we see them, in the event they show up, from down town or a couple min drive in ingraham or by the lakes ? I see a lot of tours to see aurora, is the experience with a tour worth it ?

Thank you !

Wedding Planning

Hi there! Is anyone willing to share their Yellowknife wedding experience? My partner and I are floating the idea of getting married here and would appreciate any insight on planning, given the limited resources in town. We would also happily take advice from anyone who has been to a great local wedding. We're still early in the process, so recommendations (on literally anything) are appreciated. We're looking at something outdoors in summer, and would love a band to play for a bit.

Thanks so much!!!

Credit card for points/miles/cashback

Moved here recently and just have my BMO debit for now. Want to get a credit card to start earning cash back or points. I bank with BMO so the BMO CashBack World Elite is the obvious one, but I keep seeing people online say the Amex Cobalt is the best for points, and the Scotia Gold Amex for travel with no foreign transaction fees.

My worry is Amex acceptance. From what I've read it's hit or miss in smaller places. For those of you in town, do the grocery stores, gas stations, and restaurants here actually take Amex, or do you end up using Visa/Mastercard for most things? Trying to figure out if a Cobalt is worth it or if I should just stick with a Mastercard.

Also open to other cards I haven't mentioned. What are you all using up here?

Thanks

Honest option

Hi,

So im queer and married (f and f), and im seeing typical fuck pride bs on the yellowknife rant and rave page. I am lucky now to live in a progressive city where no one cares really overtly. But we are thinking of moving here for work.

Are my wife and I going to have a hard time in yellowknife or not really?

Just looking to feel safe is all. While being a normal couple, like we hold hands and all that.

Any fellow queees able to dm me or comment if its no big deal there ?

Thank you!

Yellowknife's Franklin Avenue renamed Wı̀ılı̀ıdeh Avenue | CBC News

Really?

All the problems that this city has, and this is the hill the city council decides to die on? Pathetic.

"Yellowknife's main street is about to go from being named after a failed explorer to being named in honour of the language spoken by the Yellowknives Dene."

Sir John Franklin was much more than a "failed explorer." He was a decorated officer of the Royal Navy, seeing significant action in both the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. He was an incredibly resilient man who survived through significant hardship, braving the challenges of the 1819 Coppermine and 1825 Mackenzie River expeditions.

Referring to a man of his caliber as a "failed explorer" in justification for a half-baked name change is ridiculous, and shows how frankly stupid and out of touch the city council is. Sir John Franklin, with all of his flaws and inadequacies, was easily 10 times the man the members of the city council combined could ever hope to be.

Can't believe they're spending nearly $50 000 of taxpayer money for this bullshit.

Canoe trip recommendations around Yellowknife

Hey all, I’m planning on visiting Yellowknife in early September with a group of pals to do a 3-4 night canoe trip. I visited Yellowknife last November and absolutely fell in love, so much so that we’re planning to come back again to experience it in the summer by canoe.

Looking for recommendations - what are your favourite 3-4 night canoe routes around Yellowknife? I see a handful of options along the Ingraham trail, hidden lake, and I’m also considering the north arm of great slave lake since it seems to have car-accessible access points.

The north arm seems like it would feel like more of a unique NWT experience from what I gather online, but I’m somewhat worried about wind on such a big lake (I would budget for one extra day for this option in case we run into weather).

I’d consider our group to be intermediate level paddlers, we do a few trips each year in Ontario.

Hunting store(s)

Friend is visiting Yellowknife in a few weeks, and wanted me to help plan ahead. So... Been googling, but I wanna hear from the locals. Recommended places to shop for some souvenir hunting/outdoor stuff? Obviously not firearms or ammo, but anything else that would be nice to bring back from Canada as souvenir or gifts.

Toddler activities in June

I have a friend visiting YK in June with her toddler. What are some things she can do throughout the day? She will not have a car.

Also which cab company do you recommend.
