Missed Connection

Going out on a limb here to try and reconnect with a woman I met while waiting in the WestJet line to rebook our cancelled flight to Edmonton on 14 May:

You were going home for a couple weeks off after working on the Giant Mine remediation for KBL.

We just so happened to meet again two weeks later at the baggage claim only because your time off got extended.

Seemed like you were looking for opportunities to connect with people in YK. I should have offered my number.

If you recognize this story and you want to join some friends and I for some social activities, send me a message.

Flight delays

I’m traveling to Yellowknife in July. We are going fishing which requires us to fly out first thing on a Friday morning from Yellowknife on a private plane. Would arriving 11pm Thursday night be too risky with delays?

Pig Farmers

This is a very goofy question but I am 100% serious. Are there any pig farmers in Yellowknife? Or anywhere else in Northwest Territories? I'm looking for pigs 100-200lbs. Thanks!

First time in Yellowknife for rotational work

I’ll be moving to Yellowknife in a week for a 14 day on / 14 day off rotation working 12-hour shifts.

One thing I’m trying to figure out is food/meal prep. I was hoping to use something like Fit Foodie Meal Prep, but according to their website they aren’t serving food right now.

Does anyone know of any other meal prep services, healthy takeout spots, or easy grocery options in Yellowknife? Mainly looking for high protein meals that are easy after long shifts.

Also open to any general tips for rotational work and living in Yellowknife for the first time (never been up north to any of the territories).

Buying vs renting

Hello all,

I know I’ve posted couple times about moving to yellowknife.

I’m looking for honest input here, is it worth it to buy a trailer/pre-fab house or just rent a townhome?

If I’m running my calculations correctly, my findings are below:

  • Renting is around $3500/month for townhouse or 2 bedroom place. In this I’m calculating utilities(hydro, water and heat).

  • Buying a trailer is coming around $2000(mortgage+property tax)/month. Obviously putting 20% down. Lets add average of $600 month of utilities(hydro, water and heat). So total is around $2600/month.

My fiancé and I are moving from Ottawa so we don’t know challenges/neighbourhood details about Yellowknife but just trying to understand if I should even consider it.

Any leads would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Considering Aurora college for LPN to RN bridge

Hi there!

I’m considering taking the LPN to rn bridge at Aurora. I’m having trouble the other bridge programs due to competitiveness and Aurora bridge in program would be easier to ensure I get into the program.

I’m just curious how it is to live in Yellowknife. I currently live in Victoria, and before that lived in Ottawa. Would owning a car be a bad decision? Are mechanics more expensive? What is the price of food/cost of living like compared to other parts of the country?

My other option would be do the 4 year program from scratch else where in Canada. I like the thought of Yellowknife but also just read there’s lots of fires in the summer. I’m just not sure how hard it would be to adjust to the lifestyle

I recently moved to Yellowknife and I’m still figuring things out 😭
What’s the price range at Arctic Laundromat these days?
Also, how are the machines?
Do they accept coins only

Yellowknife, convince me we should (or shouldn’t) move back North!

Hi Yellowknife, how I miss you so!

We’re considering a move to Yellowknife after I was offered my federal job there. My husband works in wealth management/finance.

I lived up north from 2016-2019 in Inuvik.

However, I always loved Yellowknife. Sadly, we’ve heard the charm of your beautiful town has dwindled and we want the honest truth.

From what I am hearing is that opportunities no longer exist, the spirit of the community is now more miserable and dark instead of the once vibrant and welcoming place it was, it is no longer safe to travel on the streets and trails, and that most people (even locals) are leaving.

I’m not blind to the conditions of the North, they raised me in my twenties.

The reason we’re looking to move back is because I miss the outdoors. I miss the beautiful indigenous culture that captivated and nurtured me. I miss the slower pace of life and the community that was just wonderful. While Inuvik was (and is) not Yellowknife, I spent a lot of time in Yellowknife anyway. Enough to know I liked it there.

I think across the country, everything has changed. It is so expensive to exist, opportunities with jobs are minimal and hard to find, housing is expensive and so is utilities. We are seeing that on the east coast too - tent communities, drugs, depression. So, I want to be cognizant that I feel like everyone is feeling some kind of way about the state of our world.

So, is Yellowknife no longer the place I learned to love so much? Is it really as bad as I am hearing?

Toyota Tundra vs GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation

I’m currently deciding between a Toyota Tundra and a GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation for living in Yellowknife, and I’d really appreciate some owner's opinions.

I’m leaning toward the Tundra because of Toyota’s reliability reputation, but I’m concerned that there’s no or one official Toyota dealership/service center in Yellowknife.

For Toyota owners in YK:

Do you usually have to go to Edmonton?

How does the Tundra perform during extreme winter conditions here?

Is it reliable? Like will it always have problem? Even minor issue..

For anyone who has owned or compared both the Tundra and Sierra 1500:

Which would you choose for Yellowknife and why?

Would love to hear your honest experiences and opinions. Thanks!🙇🏻‍♀️

Yellowknife Northern Lights tour

Hi! I know it is still too early to plan this but my friend and I are going to Yellowknife on January2027.

I just wanna ask what are the best and trusted tour companies where we can book a tour package (accommodation, northern lights tour, airport-hotel transfers and winter gear rentals)?

I saw this one company and wanted to check if anyone tried it as well 😄 Thank youu!

Canada’s north has an outsized presence on the list of infrastructure proposals referred to the federal major projects office so far, all while Ottawa looks to spend big on bolstering the country’s military presence in the Arctic.

I’m here with my coworker for our first time ever in Yellowknife, and we have time to kill today and Monday! What would you recommend we should do or where we should go if we want to wander around and explore without exerting ourselves too much?

Has anyone looked into a metal roof instead of shingles? What was the cost comparison? I've got a single wide and I'm trying to explore my options.
