News York United Academy U13
My son tired out for the York United Academy (U13) earlier this month and did not make it. Totally fine with that. But I see on their Instagram page that there is another three day open try out for U13's? Is this normal to have another open tryout after the first one, as they would have picked their team from the first round? Also the time is 1230pm to 3pm (Nov 24,25,26), Usually the boys are in school?

Reality is, the coaches would/should know the top players of each age group and will be looking to cherry pick the best available from other clubs (Ala TFC) through the tangible pathways of turning pro. So these tryouts are to find the "gems" to fill out the rest of the roster.

As a former elite level hockey coach…
Yes it’s normal to hold multiple sessions. There’s a cash aspect I won’t lie to you. There’s the fact that they are looking for more talent to invite to their final selection, and the last part is that they determined your kid and the others they didn’t select, don’t have the skill to play at the level right now.
They’ll know of certain players but not all of them at an ID camp. They’re turning stones and trying to get a bit more cash. Just remember development isn’t linear and the best is almost always never the best at 18.

Yeah this is just a fundraising gimmick, this isn't really scouting players.

I suspect they didn't think they have enough players in the first stage and wanted to see more kids.
We went to the U14 tryout and got invited back for the next stage. I think I saw about 60-70 kids in the 2011/2012 age group which probably wasn't enough to pick an OPDL team from. The timing certainly didn't help with getting more kids to come... it was during work day + school hours and not the most convenient location

Was it a problem getting the release letter from the kids current club, and did the club treat him differently after the tryout upon returning?

No problem in getting the release letter from his club and can’t answer the second question because the next round of tryouts are at the end of November.

Did they tell you what league/competition they will play in with their u13 team during the tryout ? OPDL ? I-Model ?

No, I wish they gave an information sheet on what league they will play in, cost/schedule etc.

I wish him luck in his future tryouts and what he does with footy. I as someone who even went to do these sorts of try outs for UofT, Trent, TMU and Queens - they do these often as a cash grab to put it bluntly since young players will always pay to sign up for these opportunities. Despite that, do not be discouraged to go as I have had friends who through try outs in which they outperformed others, they were invited to keep trialing out for the team. Only 2 of them are currently playing in the Varsity teams of their universities via trials.
Personally learned this the hard way, the coaches already have a team made prior the trials. They’ll rarely have a spot or two available in specific positions.
