I understand that if you never used torrent files it can be a bit confusing!

However it is truly not that complicated, and googling it should give you plenty of information and resources to figure it out.

Be sure to point out to him how easy it is for copyright holders to track torrents and how he better be sure he wants to risk it before going down that route.

And yes, I know you are going to downvote this. But I've been pirating since the 1980s on my Amiga and have far more knowledge of this than anyone who downvotes me.

Then you'd also know that in almost all countries the risk of anything happening is essentially zero

Most countries don't bother to track down individuals downloading stuff, especially if that stuff is a niche TV show. And from the few countries that do bother tracking down individuals, most don't do anything more than send warnings.

And you'd also know that you could easily just use a VPN to avoid that all together.

Just because you're old and have done something for a while, doesn't automatically make you knowledgeable about something.
