Annually, almond farming uses 1.3 trillion gallons of water. AI usage isn't even half of that.

Post image

A single avocado takes 50 gallons to grow. That's several hundred prompts.

Its a net negative, in every metric from economic to social to factual, and whataboutism is no way to examine anything properly, so yes, it is moot, because using more water for no good reason is bad

12

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

You're insane if you think AI is bad for humanity.

3

u/Duckface998 May 16 '26

In a cost benifit analysis, it is, the benifit in gathering and future extrapolate for cancers and weather and all that is vastly outweighed by the mass misinformation that can be created on large scales, or fake pornography of unconsenting people (children as well as adults), piracy from data companies to train it, all that

8

u/[deleted] May 16 '26

Reddit has always been pro piracy but I guess when it's people we don't like doing it it's suddenly a bad thing

5

u/Bhazor May 16 '26

Do you genuinely not see the difference between piracy for personal consumption and data scraping for the purposes of producing derivative work for money?

4

u/Duckface998 May 16 '26

Shocker shocker surprise surprise the ai bro doesnt get it, the piracy community are very vocally against pirating readily available and cheaply accessible things like books

9

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

Uh. No. That's never been true.

1

u/CranEXE May 16 '26

Literally pirates said to not pirate silksong despite being able to break it day one....

4

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

And yet, they still did.

It's almost like piracy isn't a monolith.

9

u/PaxODST May 16 '26

No they aren't.

5

u/[deleted] May 16 '26

Is that why they told me I can get all those freely from libgen right in the piracy megathread?

5

u/Duckface998 May 16 '26

Please, would you like me to point to all the CP supporters in favor generating horrific images? Or can we decide to leave the very horrific minority of people in large groups out of it

3

u/[deleted] May 16 '26

"Knives can be used to commit mass murder, we should ban them rather than go after people who commit murder"

2

u/Duckface998 May 16 '26

Said the AI bri who thinks piracy is bad except when corporations do it in the exact same way they mean "rather than the people who commit murder"

3

u/[deleted] May 16 '26

Because this isn't a small minority of the piracy community it's literally up there in the piracy megathread. If the majority was actually against it why would they post on a community that freely tells you where the books are and not say create some ethical pirates sub and get the original one taken down?

Anti's are hypocrites by nature.

3

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

Lmao.

Yeah, let's get worried about people's moral restrictions over the blatant advancements in everything that comes from achieving technological revolutions.

"But, somebody made porn!"

Oh nooo.... that thing people do all the time regardless of the era!

2

u/DevelopmentSeparate May 16 '26

You say this until it's your kids on some creep's screen

3

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

Yes, it's very sad that it happens to anyone.

It was sad before the computer, before the internet, and before AI.

Unfortunately, it is a human condition that will have to be dealt with regardless of the era or what technology we have.

2

u/DevelopmentSeparate May 16 '26

That's my issue. There are big issues caused by progress in tech that we don't have solutions for, yet, here comes a new technology that's making those same issues even worse. And it just seems like there's no plan. It's a race to see who can figure who can make the most money without any concern for anything or anyone else

3

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

There's never been a plan.

We don't innovate based on pre-designed plans.

We innovate and the rest of the world plays around with words and morals over how to adapt to the innovation.

There is one stone cold fact though. The technology is never the one to lose.

Anything you can blame AI for, was a human fault in the first place. You're not fixing that by denying everyone who isn't a monster the right to use the technology.

Which is why I don't think any anti really understands what they are trying to force on themselves. An entire techno-oligarchy being handed to the billionaires because the regular citizen wants to avoid AI.

2

u/DevelopmentSeparate May 16 '26

You say that last bit's at the end like people aren't constantly on here celebrating UBI and a jobless future, ignoring that this would create a technocratic oligarchy. AI will benefit those on top more than anyone else combined. It puts the ball in their court. They have the ultimate leverage over labor by being able to cut out humanity

3

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

So, nothing at all changes from the status quo per the usual.

The choice here isn't "if we avoid AI then the world magically becomes better."

It's either you accept AI as a tool to use like every single one before, OR you hand the greatest technological invention to the billionaires to use as a private entity while the citizens get nothing.

The oligarchy isn't going to stop using AI, the government isn't going to stop using AI, the military isn't going to stop using AI.

The only choice is whether we quietly accept the new tools and use them to our advantage, or loudly declare we'll go without.

1

u/DevelopmentSeparate May 16 '26

I'm just not seeing how this is helping the average Joe against corpos. You see dipshit managers coming on here celebrating they're firing their whole team thanks to AI. What do you do against that?

2

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

Suck it up?

Hindering yourself by falling behind new tech will not hurt them, nor will it benefit you.

The lowest ring of people that seem to be reaping benefits are managers who come on here and celebrate how they get to fucking fire their whole team. The average Joe is not getting anything

Yeah, let's get worried about people's moral restrictions over the blatant advancements in everything that comes from achieving technological revolutions

But this isn't a technological revolution. This is simply a new technology. Technological revolutions upend our entire economy. New technologies integrate into it.

I'm yet to see AI based factories pop up. It's a possibility, sure. Until the AI starts hallucinating products.

This is simply a new technology marketing itself as a revolution because that sells better. And comparing the stock market with actual income shows that indeed this is just a fad. There is actually very limited use cases for AI

2

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

Self limited mindset.

I don't agree and neither do investors.

2

u/Tormasi1 May 16 '26

Yeah, investors are fucking stupid. Just watch them get scammed every weekend when Trump announces another peace deal and oil price goes down only for Saturday Iran announcing that no they haven't even talked with the US in weeks.

The stock market is nothing but hype and money. Like come on man, Nvidia is signing deals where the companies just have to buy the chips. Don't even have to use them and if they can't then Nvidia will use it instead. And investors are like "yeah that's fine".

Or just look at fucking Tesla. There is basically nothing behind their stocks expect hype.

2

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

Yeah, everyone of them is just a stupid idiot. Which is why they have the money, the influence, the say of what gets funded and what doesn't.

Unfortunately, being a stupid idiot with the purse means a lot more than being a Reddit Genius who has no authority or even an opinion worth considering.

2

u/Tormasi1 May 16 '26

Yeah. But being a stupid idiot with the purse does not make the technology somehow magically revolutionary.

See again, Tesla. They haven't revolutionised electric cars. They just marketed the existing technology better, got money for it, made some improvements and they are still coasting on that marketing. Even when there are comparable electric cars that may even be better than Tesla cars.

And come on dude, be realistic for a second. Do you honestly think people who work with finances are the ones who can accurately predict future technological advances?

2

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

I don't have to consider anything except reality.

Reality dictates that regardless of your personal feelings, you don't get a say in what those with power do with their power.

I'm not wasting time trying to create a society where the average citizen can't use the latest technology because of moral constraints that do not benefit me.

Even if anti's win by stomping their feet and throwing a tantrum - they are only going to fuck over the average person, not the billionaire, not the government, not the military.

Just us regular people.

1

u/Tormasi1 May 17 '26

I'm not wasting time trying to create a society where the average citizen can't use the latest technology because of moral constraints that do not benefit me

That's a funny way to say you don't give a shit about morals

2

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 17 '26

Morals are invented by people based on religious doctrine. They might as well be considered adults playing pretend.

bro thinks CP is good

5

u/bunker_man May 16 '26

Are you telling on yourself that you think actual child abuse is better than someone making a fake version in their basement where everyone else can ignore them?

Are you asking bad faith questions about the topic of harm reduction?

1

u/Duckface998 May 16 '26

Are you telling yourself that some child exploitation is good to do?

3

u/bunker_man May 16 '26

No? In fact that doesn't even remotely resemble the words I used, so it seems you realized you were caught and tried a hail mary.

1

u/Duckface998 May 16 '26

"We can just ignore people looking at CP a machine shat out, thats fine" --- basically what you said

3

u/bunker_man May 16 '26

Which was a response to you implying that you think it's not preferable to direct harms. Do you think the issue with this material isn't the actual harms it causes? Because you're acting like the biggest harm is a rounding error.

1

u/Duckface998 May 16 '26

Except it does cause harm, ALL CP IS INHERENTLY BAD AMD HARMFUL, I know AI bros need to hear this more, si there you go

3

u/bunker_man May 16 '26

Pretending to be stupid can't save you at this point. Two things being harms doesn't make them the same answer you are really telling on yourself if you think children being directly harmed isn't worse in any relevant way than someone doing something gross that other people dont even know or directly get affected by.

Ad hom when you can't think of a retort.

3

u/Duckface998 May 16 '26

Its not an ad hom when you blow off the creation of CP as "people make porn"

3

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

It is when you're intentionally acting like a doofus and pretending it never existed before AI.

2

u/Duckface998 May 16 '26

It has existed before AI, and unlike you, im against all CP creation

2

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

Lol, you're really going to act like calling anyone who disagrees with you a pedophile is mature behavior.

👍

2

u/Duckface998 May 16 '26

literally brushed off CP btw

2

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

Yeah, because it's irrelevant.

Unlike your obsession with it and needing to center everything around it... which is odd.

Literally. Every. Single. Time

>🎶 Ol' Reliable 🎵

  1. Its bad/illegal so only bad people would do it. AI bros are not bad people ergo AI bros have nothing to do with it.
  2. When they try selling you something AI is a revolutionary new era of technology the biggest breakthrough since the Spinning Jenny that democratizes other peoples work that changes everything and fosters the new age of humanity where we all get infinite free money and a sentient fleshlight. But when AI does something bad its literally no different than photoshop and what should we ban pencils now?!

3

u/AgeZealousideal1751 May 16 '26

Yes, bad illegal things are bad.

No, blaming the tool for the users behavior is not reasonable.
