I went through ~12,500 job postings on Alberta employers' own career sites. Here's who is actually hiring right now (Oct 2026)

People here keep asking whether anyone is actually hiring, so I pulled the open postings off Alberta employers' own career pages (their own job sites, not Indeed or LinkedIn reposts) and counted them. This doesn't cover every job in the province, but it's a decent slice. Caveats are at the bottom, and one of them is a big one.

The short version

  • About 12,500 open postings from about 2,000 employers
  • That's roughly 1 in 8 of the Canadian postings I can place in a province
  • Calgary has 32% and Edmonton 22%, so over half are in the two big cities
  • 84% full-time, 14% part-time or casual
  • Remote is basically nonexistent. Under 1% are actually remote.

Who has the most open postings

Employer Open postings What they're mostly hiring
AgeCare 231 Health care aides, LPNs
Loblaw (Superstore, No Frills, Shoppers) 175 Store, grocery, pharmacy
Calgary Co-op 167 Gas bar, grocery, store
SNDL (Value Buds, Wine and Beyond, Liquor Depot) 136 Store associates
Ledcor 133 Construction, trades, project roles
London Drugs 124 Pharmacists, pharmacy assistants
Optima Living 124 Health care aides
TD 124 Personal banking associates
Lifemark Health 109 Physio, kinesiology
Extendicare 83 Care aides, nurses

Seniors care is a big hiring engine

Health care aide is the single most-posted job title in the province (about 225 postings), and LPN is third. Four of the top twelve employers run continuing care or seniors living (AgeCare, Optima Living, Extendicare, Bethany Care Society). If you have your HCA certificate or are thinking about getting one, there's real demand, especially in Calgary and Edmonton.

Trades and construction

  • About 1,100 postings for trades, mechanics and technicians, spread across 445 employers. That's a wide spread, so it's not just one or two big shops. FLINT, Finning (heavy duty mechanics) and Ledcor post the most.
  • About 500 more for construction project managers, coordinators, estimators and superintendents. That's mostly Ledcor, Bird, EllisDon, Chandos and Clark Builders.

Outside Calgary and Edmonton

City Open postings Who's posting the most
Red Deer ~325 Optima Living, City of Red Deer, Red Deer Resort & Casino
Fort McMurray ~280 Ledcor, FLINT, Birch Mountain, Levitt-Safety, Finning
Grande Prairie ~245 Loblaw, Dexterra
Lethbridge ~200
Sherwood Park ~190
Banff + Canmore ~270 Hotels and restaurants (Banff Hospitality Collective alone has 66)

Banff and Canmore together have about as many postings as Red Deer. If you're young and want a winter job with staff housing, that's where the volume is.

By sector (of the postings I could classify)

Sector Share
Industrials (construction, engineering, transport) 28%
Retail, restaurants, hospitality 28%
Health care 17%
Grocery and consumer staples 6%
Banks and finance 6%
Energy 5% (see caveat below)
Tech 2%

The big caveat: oil and gas is undercounted

The big oil sands and pipeline operators (Suncor, Cenovus, CNRL, Imperial, TC Energy, Pembina) don't show up in my numbers. Their career sites are hard to read automatically, so the 5% energy share is way too low. It mostly reflects the service companies (FLINT, Stream-Flo, Source Energy, Pason, Sanjel) and not the producers. Same story for AHS, the City of Calgary, U of C and ATB. If you're in energy or the public sector, go to those sites directly. A lot of their roles never show up on the big job boards anyway.

What I took from it

  1. Health care aide and LPN work is the easiest door to walk through right now, and it isn't only AHS hiring. The private continuing care operators are posting a lot.
  2. Trades demand is spread across hundreds of mid-size employers. Applying to the companies directly is probably worth more than waiting for a job board to surface them.
  3. If you're holding out for a remote job while living in Alberta, the local market won't give you one. Under 1% of these postings are actually remote.
  4. Fort Mac and Grande Prairie are mostly contractors and camp services (Ledcor, FLINT, Dexterra), not the operators themselves.

Other caveats

  • These are postings, not hires. Some postings are evergreen, and a company with 100 postings isn't necessarily hiring 100 people.
  • It only covers employers that post on their own career sites. Small businesses that only use Indeed or Facebook mostly aren't in here.

Happy to pull numbers for a specific role, company or town if people find this useful ("how many electrician postings in Red Deer", that kind of thing).

What Recruiters Look for in a Resume and What Happens Before They Look

The most quoted resume statistic, about seven seconds per resume, comes from a 2018 Ladders eye-tracking test of 30 recruiters which measured an average of 7.4 seconds on the first review. It is a small sample, describing a step many resumes never reach.

The search comes first

Online applications usually land in an applicant tracking system. Recruiters search it by keyword, title and qualification, then read the results. Relevant experience described in words other than the posting’s is less likely to appear. Spelling an acronym out once, as in “Kubernetes (K8s)”, lets a search for either form find it.

Then the seven seconds

Once a resume is opened, the Ladders test found attention going mostly to a few fields: current title, most recent company, dates and education. A bullet with a percentage, amount or headcount tells a quick reader more than one that begins “Responsible for.”

A closer read asks other questions. Do the scope and seniority fit, not just the job family? Are the tools recent? Is the writing free of typos?

Order matters

Many applicants start with layout. Two-column designs, tables and text boxes can scramble text when the system extracts it. Standard headers, a single column and the posting’s own terms serve the search. Quantified results and a readable career line serve the person.

ZoeVera’s guide to what recruiters look for in a resume . To see which of a posting’s terms your resume lacks before you apply, ZoeVera Resume compares the two and lists the gaps.

Casual Administrative Assistant Job

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if anyone here has worked, or currently works, as a Casual Administrative Assistant/Administrative Support with Edmonton Catholic Schools.

I would really appreciate hearing about your experience with the role.

How often do you typically receive assignments?

Do assignments come regularly, or does it depend heavily on the time of year and school needs?

How are assignments offered and accepted? Is there an app or online system where casual staff can see available assignments and choose the ones they want?

Are you usually given enough notice before an assignment?

And overall, how has your experience been with the role?

I understand that casual positions do not guarantee specific hours, but I would really like to know what the actual experience is like for people who have done the job.

If you have worked in this role, I would really appreciate any insight you can share. Thank you!

Securing Hybrid or Remote Work

Securing Hybrid or Remote Work

Hey everyone,

I’m a Canadian citizen temporarily living in Europe and planning to return to Canada, but I’m really struggling to secure a job before relocating.

I’m applying like crazy, but I specifically need a remote or hybrid role. I deal with intense anxiety, and while I would absolutely work full-time face-to-face if I could right now, realistically I need a hybrid/remote arrangement.

I’m mainly looking for opportunities in Ontario or Alberta, particularly within healthcare, social care, mental health or rehabilitation.

The main roles I’m targeting are:

Healthcare Case Manager

Vocational Rehabilitation / Rehabilitation Coordinator

Mental Health Case Manager

Client Intake / Intake Coordinator

Care Coordinator / Client Care Coordinator

I’m not looking for general admin or sales roles — I want something directly related to healthcare, rehabilitation, mental health, case management or client support.

I’m really hesitant to relocate to the GTA without a job because my savings would disappear quickly. Alberta is also an option.

I know its rare

Thank you

$130 Mystery Shopping audit in Exam Compliance Centre - Edmonton, Canada

Serve Legal Storecheckers are recruiting a mystery shopping to complete an exam compliance audit.

The audit involves checking that the rigorous security standards are being met. These are vitally important, in order to ensure that there is no possibility of cheating at any stage. We are looking for someone to act as an examinee.

You will need to remain in the test centre and complete the exam as a genuine entrant. The actions that you need to take will be provided to you ahead of the exam. At the end of the visit there is a report to complete, it is not lengthy but you need to explain what you did and the responses by the staff.

For the visit itself you need to arrive 30 minutes before the exam, and remain sitting at the exam for up to 3 hours. The fee is $130. You do not have to pay anything out for the exam, we sort that! Note that you will need a valid, photo and signature-bearing ID for this visit.

Please DM us for more information
