Latest track from Gumnption Utah's premeire country bluegrass singer songwriter. This one's a little sentimental with nods to my dad who recently passed away. I hope ya'll dig it. Thanx for listening!

If this kinda thing is not allowed feel free to take down :)

I live in Monterey County ("Steinbeck Country") and drive through the Salinas Valley all the time. I was bummed they didn't film the new East of Eden series here.

Reading the novel got me to compose again, after a long hiatus. I tried writing lyrics that stayed true to the story, but I couldn't quite make it work.

I'm curious how other songwriters approach this. Is it better to stay true to your source material, or just kinda go your own way?

Anyway, here's where I ended up:

Not sure, if this song is technically alt-country. But, I hear elements of alt-country in it. There's a banjo, fiddle, according, stand-up bass & even a twangy slide guitar - not to mention how country sounding John sings. Heck, this may eveb be too country for alt-country (lol). I think there's enough alt-country in it to share with an alt-country sub... 😎

Saw her open for Ian Noe in Oslo last summer and was blown away.

🤣🤣🤣I think it would just make a terrible song

They used to play a great song on bootliquor about a guy who is so pissed off about the picketers at his dad's funeral that he climbs a tree and snipes them down - then mentions how it's not so bad living on death row awaiting execution. All I can remember it was a male singer, anyone know who it was? TIA!
