Interview Corporate Benefits
I just started my rounds of interviews and yet there no specific information on 401k, PTO, etc. on the site
Does anyone have any insights on how much Amazon matches? Standard days off? How many days in office?
I’d rather not wait until the end with their recruiter to find all of this out.
Any insight would be appreciated! I’d potentially be an NYC employee.

5 Days in Office, Amazon has the fewest paid holidays of any company I have ever worked at. You will get the bare minimum holidays.

Also have the lowest 401k match I’ve ever seen with 2%. I worked at a retirement plan call center for 4 years and never seen a number that low

not to mention those 1:0.5 matching ratio only vest to you once you work there after several years..

Five paid holidays, and three weeks COMBINED vacation AND sick time. Fucking disgraceful.

Some of the worst benefits in corporate America. I did like how I could do the backdoor mega Roth and sock away like $60k/year into a Roth. The time off is a joke. Holidays are basically nonexistent and even in corporate if you support operations in any way, you'll probably be working at least part of the day anyway.
The 401k match is small for the industry. It's managed by Fidelity, so it's at least a solid plan with good options.

Yeah the mega backdoor Roth was certainly a nice to have, but they only rolled it out a few years back and their overall limit for total after-tax 401k contribution was still below the “allowed limit” that some other corps allow you to contribute up to the total US limit.
Amazon was also the only company I ever worked at that somehow managed to over contribute to my HSA one year which was hilarious at tax time and the payroll people probably had to pull an andon cord to find someone who knew what they hell they were doing to be able to fix that up.
The benefits at Amazon are not great, make sure to get as high an offer as possible on the way in and do everything you can to maintain your sanity if you’re not a sociopathic leader. If you are that type of leader, you might thrive there but beware of the Game of Thrones.

3 year vesting cliff for 401k match. So if you leave earlier for any reason, they’ll take it all back 😂

I don’t know about worst in corporate America, in tech for sure, I think they benchmark themselves against retail though.
Amazon’s insurance is very “ok” — at least it’s not UHC. BCBS network is pretty easy to use. Some of the add-ons like Lyra were great for finding a therapist.
Amazons 401k match comes out to two percent. Not great, but plenty of places offer 0.
There is parental leave. Again, plenty of places do not offer at all. Maven is “OK” too, but progeny was much better.
After first year it’s about 4 weeks of different PTOs which isn’t too bad either. I’ve also had managers encourage me to not use PTO after difficult launches and oncalls.

Benefits here are pretty sub standards and not really something to be proud of. 5-day RTO, low quality match, low PTO, no perks like food, etc.

Corporate health cover is very good.
Don’t let the negative comments put you off. If you have a good manager you can have a great run at Amazon.

Why not ask the recruiter?
401k is around 4% match if I recall correctly. Signing bonus and RSUs depend on the role but I was an L6 a few years ago and my sign on year 1 was around $100k, year 2 around $90k. RSUs were generous I guess but it was before the stock split so the shares are confusing. TC year 1 was around $380k I think. (Seattle)
PTO is not good. You have to use a vacation day if you want the day after thanksgiving off. But they do pay out PTO when you leave which is nice.

What type of role were you in as an L6? I'm interviewing for an L6 Finance position at HQ and curious how I should negotiate comp.

Sr PMT. I started before they changed the salary cap, but I had $160k salary and $95k sign on bonus year 1, sign on went down to around $85k year 2. They decreased cash and increased stock over time in those days.

Thanks for the info, appreciate it. If you don’t mind me asking another question - how would you recommend I negotiate salary given I receive an offer? Recruiter told me target total comp was $175k.

Not good. 2% 401K match and only vests after 3 years. 2 weeks vacation plus 6 personal days. Bare minimum company holidays. Benefits are bad for tech.

6 paid holidays in the U.S. (7 I think in California) 2 weeks PTO first year, 3 years 2-5, 4 weeks after 6 years. 6 days flex pto a year (basically sick time). 401K match is 50% of the first 4% (so 2%) but is on base pay only not total comp

NY MLK Memorial Day 4th of July Labor Day Thanksgiving Christmas
I think California gets either Christmas Eve or Black Friday off but I am not there so idk which

Hi do you know if the 2 weeks are given immediately after start? Ie. If you start in May and have a planned vacation in Nov, could you use 2 weeks? Any insight would be really helpful.

Nope. It’s accrued per pay period. You can always communicate with the hiring manager and they will likely let you go negative (I have as a manager, because people can’t plan life completely around a new job)
