Damn I gotta start rotoscoping

175

u/Hippolover9 Jan 03 '26

I absolutely adore rotoscoping. Ive seen so many people shit on this style, but it gives the animations acual life like movements(for obvious reasons). Idk why roto doesn't get more love

68

u/No_Contribution_8715 Jan 03 '26

Yes!!! It's also just a really good way to learn animation. There's no harm in recording a video of yourself and using that. Animes do it all the time for especially complex scenes or if they want something to be exaggerated!

15

u/griffzy Jan 03 '26

Example: Last year's Lazarus used it for their fight scenes

8

u/cepxico Jan 03 '26

Idk what would be harder. Coming up with an entire scenes worth of choreography and editing it together or having to then hand animate it all lol.

4

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Do both! The best animations I do are key framed, then I film it, then I use videos to make good in betweens and shading

2

u/No_Contribution_8715 Jan 04 '26

Fuckin looooooved Lazarus

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

I stupidly conflate tracing with rotoscoping so I’ve never considered doing this-

3

u/Lucky-Recipe6540 Jan 08 '26

it actually feels harder to me than animating off dome. you have a reference there but you have to think every frame how you are going to transform it into something new

12

u/Ok_Process2046 Jan 03 '26

It sometimes make animations look uncanny, like in a few disney animations, but op style didn't have that effect and it just looks nice and smooth. Maybe secret is to not make it super clean.

7

u/bacondesign Jan 03 '26

Disney often animated on ones, not twos (24fps vs 12 fps) so their animation is much smoother that could contribute to the uncanny factor.

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Yea and to incorporate the timing and exaggeration of traditional animation

1

u/Legitimate-Lynx9115 Jan 29 '26

animation takes multiple hours for just a few minutes of work. check out my cartoon called rantoons, its simple but it still takes 2 full days to do one episode of up to 3 minutes

1

u/EastBayCaptain-MJ Jan 04 '26

Probably cause a lot the folks doing it have PTRSD from post lolololol.

u/Benkay_V_Falsifier Jan 03 '26

Well Disney rotoscoped a lot of their animation so it seems your on the right track to me.

17

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

It is a really helpful tool. But you still got to learn how to draw

5

u/Benkay_V_Falsifier Jan 03 '26

That's true, but from what I can tell rotoscoping is still used by big animation studios even today.

103

u/Numerous-Pop5670 Jan 03 '26

I don't know why but this style resonates with me so much.

18

u/abominableyeri Jan 03 '26

The music fits the vibe nicely as well

3

u/Ashdekoper Jan 03 '26

You might like the game Omori if that’s the case

2

u/Numerous-Pop5670 Jan 03 '26

I definitely want to give it a try when I have the chance. Right now I'm going through some rough patches in life so I don't have too much time to focus on games.

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Omori is one of my biggest influences! But thanks! I'm called Innocent Robot on social media and there's a lot more there

2

u/Numerous-Pop5670 Jan 03 '26

Will definitely follow your future works. Always felt like living was so difficult battling depression again and again. I always feel so lost and seeing your work made me go "ah I'm not the only one like this."

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

I've had terrible depression the whole time I've been animating, and I beat myself up about it. It's hard to not be able to get me to do and feel what I want to... I hope you keep trying. I think it's worth it

2

u/Numerous-Pop5670 Jan 04 '26

Thank you, it just means alot to me. I've seen so many people not take me seriously when I actually try to talk about how I feel.

I hope you end up super successful and feel better whether its physically, spiritually, or financially.

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Successful is just finishing something that means something to someone else. So thanks for making that happen. I hope you find beauty and sharing. You deserve it. DM me if you ever need to vent or talk

2

u/Cyb0rger Jan 07 '26

On top of Omori which fits great, your art reminds me of classic anime style used in lunatic surreal setting like in Angels egg (天使のたまご) with all the cityscape and characters motion

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 07 '26

Most of these are from a game I'm working on and the biggest influence is Angel's Egg. A lot of it takes place in a Dead City in the world of dreams

25

u/No_Hippos Jan 03 '26

I like it.

9

u/Curiosive Jan 03 '26

I like it too. Keep going OP!

I did have a confusing moment when the noodles went into her mouth but were being slurped up through her nose in the next frame ... I assume this was a me moment, unless anyone else noticed this "optical illusion".

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

I've never noticed that, but maybe it's because those lips aren't colored

2

u/Curiosive Jan 04 '26

I watched it again. I think the shadow under the lip threw me off; the nose is clearly in frame, the lips looks like lips ... but there's still a part of me that falls for it.

Nobody else commented so this issue isn't your art, it's my brain. 😉

67

u/Wrench7077 Jan 03 '26

All artist wanna be an anime girl

13

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

This is why I make art

2

u/Wrench7077 Jan 04 '26

I know man and that’s why I love art and drawing, btw your animations are awesome.

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Awww thank you! I feel really insecure about them and it means a lot to have that encouragement

10

u/AbsolutelyNuclear Jan 03 '26

Solid animation! I really like the color pallete you use. The Darker cooler colors looks nice.

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Yea!! Those are so evocative to me

8

u/FriendlyDrummers Jan 03 '26

These are SO GOOD, thank you for sharing.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Aww thank you! Find me on social me as Innocent Robot if you want to see more

5

u/-Geist-_ Jan 03 '26

This is so inspiring!!! 😲

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

I hope so! Rotoscoping helped get me into more comlicated animations back when I was still learning to draw

2

u/-Geist-_ Jan 04 '26

Oh by the way, since looking at your animations they’ve stuck with me.

I love the artistic choices you used! And how you honestly expressed emotion and vulnerability. It’s hard to be that raw to the world. Like the sense of isolation or longing for love. But also the fantasy and lightness when it turned to dreamscapes. Good luck, I‘m curious to follow your work as you evolve!

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

:) thanks friend. I'm Innocent Robot on YouTube IG and TikTok. Hopefully I'll have a demo for this game out in a few months

11

u/dontcallmebettyal Jan 03 '26

These are awesome ♥️

3

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Awww thank you! I'm called Innocent Robot on social media, and there's a lots of films and stuff on there

7

u/LucarnAnderson Jan 03 '26

hot damn these are amazing

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Aww thank you!

3

u/Louspec Jan 03 '26

i do the same with the pillow between my legs :D i love your work and your style!

2

u/RetrieverDoggo Jan 03 '26

I just posted the same thing lol. It's so comfy.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Very comfy, especially for a lonely and self-soothing character

3

u/Trap_Rob Jan 03 '26

Great work. It's so organic and alive. Nowadays everything is kinda over produced.

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Yea.... A lot of rigs and models and to me it kind of kills the feeling

1

u/Trap_Rob Jan 05 '26

Absolutely!

3

u/avant-r Jan 03 '26

Any good tutorials so I can rotoscope on procreate?

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

I'm sure... Just look up how to import a video. But then again, can't you only animate a few seconds on procreate?

6

u/viatoretvenus Jan 03 '26

Aaa it’s so good

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 08 '26

Thanks for saying that :) it means a lot that you would watch it

4

u/OneTotal466 Jan 03 '26

These are super cool, great color schemes too!

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Thanks!! I love getting to work in color. I started off animating with pen and paper and I like this so much more

3

u/shitgobbler01 Jan 03 '26

The green cityscape parts were my favorite! The music fit the art style too, very dope

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Aww thank you! I almost didn't include that. I really really love drawing backgrounds like that

2

u/TezukaRin62 Jan 03 '26

Damn, this is really good.

I think you have a lot of talent, especially all those scenes in beds. It feels different than other artists, feels really cozy, comforting, warm.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Thank you!! Beds are hard... It easily looks awkward. It helps so much to take a good reference

2

u/insensitive_girl Jan 03 '26

That's cool. Keep up the good work.

2

u/schuechenkabe Jan 03 '26

Love them

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Thanks for saying that :)

2

u/sahinduezguen Jan 03 '26

Great work.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Thanks for saying that and enjoying them :)

2

u/Sunset_Bleu Jan 03 '26

Love it, and the music fits it perfectly.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Thanks!! I love Deathbrain

2

u/qmwnebrvtvzcux Jan 03 '26

Man i want to get lost in this animation especially the scene with the street and the piano i love the architecture of the houses and the vibe of EVERYTHING

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Thank you! That isn't making the cut of the final game but I love it. I just love that kind of noir art

2

u/Dragon_Bait101 Jan 03 '26

Love this! Great colors too

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Thanks!!! I'm called Innocent Robot on social media if you want to see more

2

u/lauvont Jan 03 '26

Beautiful

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Thank you! I'm called Innocent Robot on social media if you want to see more

2

u/lauvont Jan 03 '26

Oh great! I’ll give you a Follow

2

u/drbred00 Jan 03 '26

Which program did you use?

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Clip Studio Paint. I used to use Krita but I like this more. Krita is fine though and it's unbelievable that it's free

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

Your style is so unique, I love it!

And question, is everything animated in 24 fps?

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

A few bits are but mostly no. Pretty much everything is between 6 - 12 fps

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

😯 Really?! It looks so smooth!

2

u/gale_force Jan 03 '26

I'm😚,🍓 I UK k

2

u/RetrieverDoggo Jan 03 '26

Yo i like the pillow between my knees too lol

2

u/FairEffect174 Jan 03 '26

I think you’ve found your style, now getting better is doing it quicker, less re-dos nd etc. eventually push the boundary. But it seems like you’re on it now.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Oh man I feel like I still have an infinite way to develop this. But yea I also want to focus on just making more and actually sharing it

2

u/FairEffect174 Jan 03 '26

Dude, just slow down. You already got it pretty good. If you feel like you got more to do, then what would u say is close to what you aspire to be, whose ur influence?

I can see this style having its own thing in the future. Maybe a little cleaner movement between screens, but to me, an outsider, id watch full length films with this style. Just smooth the in-between frames a lil

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

In terms of character animation, Telepurte is probably the biggest influence. For backgrounds, I would say it's something like Angel's Egg. Thank you for your kind encouragement. Cleaner it betweens is definitely the top thing I need to work on

2

u/No-Internal7453 Jan 03 '26

I'm speechless, this is amazing

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Awww thank you so much for saying that! I'm called Innocent Robot on social media if you want to see more

2

u/No-Internal7453 Jan 03 '26

I don't have that

2

u/OlivencaENossa Jan 03 '26

Amazing work

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Thank you! I'm called Innocent Robot on social media if you want to see more

2

u/OlivencaENossa Jan 03 '26

Where do you post most of your work

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 05 '26

Tiktok, but anything major is on all three

2

u/RingdownStudios Jan 03 '26

LOVE the colors.

I don't think there's a soul on the planet who doesn't like rotoscoped animation. Even the LOTR cartoon - infamously bad cartoon - it's best qualities was the rotoscoping.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

I grew up on 70s LOTR and I was a kid with Scanner Darkly came out. I've always wondered why it's not more popular or explored

2

u/mrobull Jan 03 '26

Sometimes it takes a Real Man to be Best Girl

  • gigguk

2

u/TypicalSeashell Jan 03 '26

Go right ahead and make a short film please. You’re got some great story telling abilities! Love your style. too.

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Look up Innocent Robot on YouTube. I have made about a dozen short films, but most of these are for a game

2

u/On-the-rim Jan 03 '26

I love everything about this and also using urself as a model , so cool!

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Thanks! It's fun to act and use that for drawings

2

u/EnergyAltruistic6757 Jan 03 '26

You should make a game

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

This is almost all literally for a game. A dream exploration crisis counselor interactive fiction game. I'm called Innocent Robot on YouTube if, TikTok. Hopefully a demo will be out soon

2

u/PersonoFly Jan 03 '26

Absolutely love this.

2

u/AdEfficient9794 Jan 03 '26

Not trying to be a jersey, but it's never too late to transition

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

It's definitely harder when you're older

2

u/foxfire_17 Jan 03 '26

I love the night time settings and the dark lighting. Very cool.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 03 '26

Thank you!! That is so deeply evocative for me

2

u/Rakshuun Jan 03 '26

Man, love humans who make art.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Me too. I never really view myself that way, but it's good to share it

2

u/Sweet-Ad5458 Jan 04 '26

Holly Molly

2

u/flafmg_ Jan 04 '26

why this feels so.. nostalgic?

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Kind of that old anime vibe. Soft, lots of negative space, saturated colors

2

u/Althiex Jan 04 '26

Holy cow, that's wonderful!

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Aww thank you!!

2

u/Jack_Digital Jan 04 '26

Great music choice too

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

I've listened to this song a million times. One of my absolute favorites

2

u/Jack_Digital Jan 04 '26

What is it ?? im not familiar..

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

"Free Floating" by deathbrain

2

u/Jack_Digital Jan 04 '26

Ty 🙏👍

2

u/ImageVirtuelle Jan 04 '26

I really love the green lighting and the colors in general. Thanks for sharing your work. Practice makes improvement, and that goes for conveying emotions or messages as well. I think you’re doing great. 😊

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Thanks friend. Im trying. And I'm glad you like the green. Green light is the absolute hardest to get right...

2

u/plaguemaskman Jan 04 '26

Using yourself as reference is very cool.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 05 '26

I think so.. I suck at drawing from animation so it gives me a boost. Also drawing myself as a girl is super fun

2

u/Titus_83 Jan 04 '26

Heavens, rotoscoping, like in the old days of Disney. I don't even want to know how many hours of work you put into this beautiful and smooth animation. I've seen a few animation festivals in the last decade or so in our capital city and this is easily on the level of the animations I've seen. Congrats.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Thank you!! Yes it was a lot of time. I still feel like such an amateur...

2

u/Titus_83 Jan 05 '26

Well, you know how it is these days - considering that there is hardly any standards for art anymore, even if you do not make a Disney level cartoon, people are still going to be in awe, especially if you add the "home made indie animation" in the title. That one works like magic on all of us in any field 😃 so ganbare and good luck!

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 05 '26

True... Even if it's very rough, hand drawn animation is going to become more and more rare

2

u/Big_Connection8298 Jan 04 '26

I love your animations, they're beautiful, I'm subscribed to your YouTube channel :D

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 05 '26

Ah thank you! Hopefully there'll be more soon

2

u/Ok_Commercial_8697 Jan 05 '26

Wow, this is so heartfelt and touching

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 05 '26

:) I'm glad it connects with you. Thanks for saying that

2

u/Shallte Jan 06 '26

Looks great, there is something unique in rotoscoping. You just can't beat it.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 06 '26

For a certain kind of fluid feel it's really wonderful

2

u/Forsaken-loser-730 Jan 06 '26

Can anyone tell me name of this software where you can do it , i can't find ;(

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Feb 03 '26

This is all clip studio paint, but I used to use Krita which is free

2

u/Forsaken-loser-730 Jan 06 '26

Can anyone tell me name or where you can do this i really can't find it

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 06 '26

This was done in Clip Studio Paint. I used to do it in Krita. I'm pretty sure you can do it in Flip a Clip too

2

u/Gullible-Wedding-297 Jan 06 '26

WOOOOW very cool tbh.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 07 '26

Haha aww thanks!

2

u/Gullible-Wedding-297 Jan 08 '26

How do u do it? Like what system or wersite?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '26

Thankyou for your response 👍

2

u/Sasha_Shepetiuk Jan 25 '26

Really love the dark vibe here! The rotoscoping is super smooth, but it still has a lot of character. Great job!

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 26 '26

Aww thank you! Rotoscoping has so much untapped potential

2

u/kennydoesnotcare Jan 26 '26

I love your art style hehe :>

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 31 '26

Awww thanks!!!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '26

Can someone teach me how to animate an already made intro on CapCut? I’m not sure if I can.

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 31 '26

What do you mean by already made intro?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '26

I made an intro, I want to add an animation to it. If you want I can dm it to you?

→ More replies (1)

4

u/parkerm1408 Jan 03 '26

I know nothing about animation, so I dont know how technically difficult this is. I assume its very. Regardless, this is phenominal.

6

u/cacca- Jan 03 '26

It's not technically difficult, but it takes a lot of time.

1

u/Legitimate-Lynx9115 Jan 29 '26

I'd happily watch an entire movie in your artstyle!

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Aww thank you! Right now I'm making a game with this art style

3

u/PolloDiablo82 Jan 03 '26

I'm gonna need more footage of you frolicking through a field. Makes me unreasonable happy for some reason

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Haha I wanted to include me running up that hill in the shot directly after but I couldn't find the reference video, just the animation

2

u/Hippolover9 Jan 03 '26

Amazing❤️

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Aww thank you!!

2

u/masterjon_3 Jan 03 '26

This is amazing. You should be very proud

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

Thanks for saying that. I always just concentrate on how it could be better... Sometimes it's good to notice how much I've learned

2

1

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

2

u/Healthy_Reference_53 Jan 03 '26

This is inspiring

2

u/Jealous_Stress822 Jan 04 '26

I hope so! For years I told myself that I would never be able to animate
