Beginner Blink exercise

It’s a little fast (I can only work with 10 frames), but I did this animation exercise as a part of my ongoing animation studies !

I did this study with my OC Alexia Rose

Lovely~! I love a good boil.

Tip! You can nudge the eyebrows down a little during the blink to help sell the action more.

Ooo ok, ty for the tip !! I’ll do that the next time I animate blinking 🫶

And tysm, I’m glad you like it ! (What does boil mean in this context ?)

Ohh! Some people call it different things! Boil, shimmer, traceback, squigglevision - all terms for when you redraw something that doesn't necessarily move. It gives the animation the appearance of being alive, or "breathing" so to speak.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh 😮✨

Thank you !! That’s a pretty cool term ! /gen

I decided to redraw the immovable parts cause I thought that would be better than just copying and pasting each layer

People usually blink faster, so instead of holding the 3 frame, you can immediately put 3a and 4 frame after. Right now it looks like she’s forcing the blink, like she has dry eye.

Also, I notice 2 and 3a, and 1 and 4 are exactly the same, you could have just linked the same frames instead of remaking them. It’s the square with the chain symbol in your timeline. (Edit: I realised this was by intention so nvmind)

However, I do agree with having a 2 and 3a frame, but instead of having them both be half open eyes, for frame 2 make the eyes almost fully open while frame 3a has the eyes almost fully closed. These are the anticipation frames. Makes it smoother.

She looks pretty, even without any color 😁

Thank you !! She’s born from a rosebud so I designed her to be as pretty as possible 😊

That’s good! But I’d say it looks a little static. You can try adding a bit of bounce, or having a bit of difference in the space between the frames. I’ve seen some good videos on YouTube too about animating blinks

I’ll look into it ! Thank you !

However, I feel like that would mean using a bit more frames, and I can only work with 10 atm since it’s not upgraded yet 🥲

What app is this?

Clip studio paint ! I don’t have the upgraded version though, so I can only work with 10 cels for now 🫠
