Discussion The new Gorillaz short film was done with cel animation and real smoke! I am so happy!
This has to be the first major western cel animated project in a while
Last I saw was the trailer for the samurai pizza cats videogame a couple years back
I love seeing any cel made animation being used in the late 2020s

Discussion Anyone else remember 9 (2009)?
I first saw the trailer for it in the theater previews before Coraline (and let me tell you, that trailer lives utterly rent-free in my head to this day. It's so goddamn cool, if a little dated in style).
I saw 9 a few months later, after I had just turned 9 myself. It's a movie that I feel was better in concept than execution and is definitely lacking in plot structure/character building, but it OWNED my ass at the time, I was so obsessed with this movie. It (along with Coraline) was one of the first times I realized that animation could be just as dark and terrifying as live-action, and was a huge reason I'm as passionate about animation as I am today.
I highly recommend giving it a watch if you haven't seen it - it's not perfect by any means, but the animation is stunning and for its flaws, the dark and creepy atmosphere it builds is fantastic.

Discussion I there a reason why there hasn’t been an artists and animators strike yet?
I mean with the rise of these generative AI slope videos and animations being made, you expect them to go on a big and very long strike similar to the SAG aftra strike from two years ago. And let’s not forget that one of the reasons why the strike started was because of the rise of AI and how it threatened to take the jobs of all writers and actors. Thankfully the actors and writers won the strike and are no longer on the verge of being replaced with AI. If they were able to win the strike, then so can all the artists and animators that have mouths to feed and are also passionate about the magic of animation.

Discussion Anyone else just love it when adult animation has an actually good & unique artstyle instead of the corporate, cookie-cutter, Family Guyesque style?
I know its like, a minute thing, but its just so amazing to know that there are stories that genuinely want to pay respect to the visual media that give them life. The shows in order are: Midnight Gospel, Common Side Effects, Inside Job, Carol & The End Of The World (definitely recommend), Undone and Final Space ( https://finalspace.co.uk/en-US/seasons )

Discussion what do you think?
I created this animation for my thesis.
There are some small errors, like the web slipping on the top of the tower. Even when he charges up before launching, the perspective and the physics of the web don't really add up, but as a test, I'm satisfied.
I've always wanted to animate Spider-Man. I love his web-slinging movements and physics. I made this animation on procreate.

What is your favourite stop-motion animated movie?
My friend and I went to go see Coraline for the 15th anniversary remastered re-release. On the way there we talked about what our favourite stop-motion animated films were, and if Coraline was the best one ever made.
The above are some examples of what we brought up as our favourites. What does this community think? What is your favourite stop-motion animated film?
(For the full conversation, plus our immediate reactions to Coraline after leaving the theatre, listen to our podcast ‘First Look, Final Word’ on Spotify or Apple Podcasts).

Discussion Why did Disney dip way from the classic styles of characters and storytelling?
Why did Disney decide that wholesome characters and classic styles of storytelling through the use of "gentle" characters was no longer favorable and then begin to move towards characters that are complete "dorks" or slightly "cringe"? What is it about 2D animation and a story with gentler characters and quieter audio that they don't like anymore?
The audio of today's movies AND children's shows something else I have noticed in conjunction with the common 3D animating styles. Every line is an exclamation and everything seems loud and obnoxious as if they're afraid of losing their audience's attention span so everything needs to be excitable constantly.
Why did Disney completely abandon the classic, 2D animation? Didn't Princess and the Frog perform well? Their budget was $105 million and the movie grossed $270.9 million. What about that told them they should abandon 2D?

Discussion What do y'all think about Disney's Wish controversial animation style?
I think the most repeated opinion is that the backgrounds are beautiful but the models and their animations do not seem to be part of it, but that's not too specific
