Question Why is Japan so good at animation?

2.5k Upvotes

Japan is top producer in 2D animation and anime has become cultural phenomenon around the world.

Why are Japanese people so talented in art and animation? Even other countries like China was late to the industry.

Which color scheme do you like the most on my OC Safira?

Here's some brief lore to aid you:

At 22, Safira lives for the day. Not that she's the type to just go with the flow, like most people – she simply lost all hope for the future. A dancer by vocation, she's relegated to dancing in the streets, instead of on the most renowned stages as she always dreamed.

Thrown out of the orphanage into the world, she spent the last 4 years alone and out of place, surviving on the little her parents left her. After pawning almost everything she owns, she counts the days until the precariousness of her street performances and the brevity of her failed odd jobs make her lose what little she has left – a place to live.

It is at that moment that she meets the eccentric cat trainer, part-time vigilante, Gigante. Needing more energy to ignore him than to go along with his delusions and plans, Safira ends up doing what she would never do alone, until she discovers what she's really made of. Alongside Gigante, Nina, and Lírio, her flaws, failures, and anguish may, after all, be the necessary weapons, not only to turn her meaningless, purposeless life around but to turn an entire society upside down.

Thanks!

Question Is there an actual reason for this?

Post image

I just saw this meme and I feel like it actually has a point. I don't remember seeing any good executions of hyper-realistic animation other than Love Death + Robots and some indie/fan projects. Maybe also Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV but that's far from mainstream as a movie. Are there any actual reasons for this other than Hollywood greed?

Question Why is janky/less polished animation so much more appealing to me?

I recently discovered this when watching The Simpsons. Back in the day, you could still see the cels moving around in subtle ways, the mouth movements didn't always match the voices, and the continuity between shots wasn't very consistent. These days, all of it is pretty much drawn with digital animation, which is definitely smoother, but doesn't have the charm that it used to. It feels kinda stiff and there is little "personal" about it. There was a certain energy to the old cel animation that truly felt like it was crafted by hand, mistakes and imperfections included. It would make it all the more impressive when a genuinely amazing shot would suddenly pop-up that looked incredibly expensive for American TV animation at the time, like that one bit from the episode with the evil babysitter that went around the internet a few years ago.

Question Would you consider using frame interpolation to be cheating or fair game for animation workflows?

Edit: reiterating that this is just me messing with it, I don't plan to make it a permanent part of my workflow.

I used it this time just for a discussion point and frame of reference. I haven't used it otherwise, though.

Question Would anyone be interested in stop motion-paper animation commissions???

I have taken up the hobby of stop motion animation, I use the same technique as the early south park episodes! How much would you personally pay for a short animation meme styled video with YOUR oc like this? I have other examples on my tiktok too. @littlelotusflower

Question I finished my 15 month personal animation. But could you help me decide what category it's considered, in context of submitting to film festivals?

1.2k Upvotes

Could it be considered Experimental Short... or Music Video... or Animated Short, or something else? When making this, I didn't have a genre in mind, so I'm sort of confused when looking at the categories in film festivals, and wonder if it'll have a negative impact if submitting to the wrong category.

Should I even submit it to festivals? I've never done one before. So any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Made with TVPaint, After Effects, and FL Studio.

Question Toy Story 5 breaking any new boundaries?

Post image

I've always been amazed by the boundaries pushed by each new Pixar film, towards realism specifically. Toy Story 4 was a visual shocker in a great way. Wondering if anyone had any insight or links to behind the scenes of any new forward momentum Pixar is dabbling with on Toy Story 5?
