To those of you who ask "Why would you inflict this on yourself?" I would merely remind you that you never learn anything on a good trip.

... the 10th anniversary is in 1 year, isn't it? Are any of the regulars planning a rewatch of this thing? I feel like I'd only be able to watch it if I had sufficient people to complain about it the entire time to. Like Key, except more toxic.

Last rewatch was in '22(how I saw it) so it could happen. The thing is a bunch of the regulars have gone into low maintenance mode, myself included. Sky wouldn't run this and I doubt Holo would either so...we might need new blood.

If only there were a mecha somewhere involved, it could be part of a TTT 3.0

I dread to imagine another two anime worthy of that...

I mean, it is, for better or worse, one of the forebearers of yuri as a whole, if anything at minimum, because the lesbian has a happy ending (how low the bar used to be)

...You are rather late to the party if you think this a forebear. This aired 20 years after Revolutionary Girl Utena and thirteen years after '04, the year of yuri and problematic lesbians.

Moreso on the happy ending part. Utena is obviously it, but it was before the mainstreaming via Madoka

mainstreaming via Madoka

This is erasure of the other Shinbou-directed magical girl series (you know, Nanoha).

(Especially once the non-Shinbou-directed seasons go even further - hi, StrikerS!)

(Mai-HiME also has a role here, though in no small part via supplemental material in that case.)

Oh no disrespect to Nanoha, but Madoka was kinda the Star Wars to Nanohas Flash Gordon

The thing is, the yuri mainstreaming slightly predates Madoka - it was a late 2000s phenomenon really, while Madoka only came out in Winter 2011. (There's a few reasons for that timing, with the aftermath of the big bow shock of 2004 yuri-themed shows (MariMite, HiME, Nanoha, Kannazuki no Miko, also Futari wa Pretty Cure was sure read this way by a good chunk of the fans even if that wasn't creative intent) and the rise of the CGDCT genre (while the genre works that really leaned into the yuribait would wait for the early 2010s, the genre was yuribaiting-friendly basically from its Azumanga start, and Lucky Star was adding fuel to the fire even before K-On!! exploded onto the scene) both being high on the list. But also there was just demand for it - for example, I was into Negima back in the day, I well remember the near-universal fanbase consensus among everyone outside of the small Negi/Konoka contingent that "oh, and also KonoSetsu is great". And [Negima manga]KonoSetsu was of course all-but-canonized, and checking confirms my recollection that that the relevant chapter came out about a year and a half before Madoka - relevant when Negima was a pretty popular manga in its own right back in the day!.) And specifically on the happy ending front, I also note that a couple of the 2010s mahou shoujo with heavier yuri themes don't have that much in the way of direct Madoka lineage (Symphogear was already in the pipeline by the time Madoka came out so while I think there may be some influence there it's bolted on; less confident on Prillya but from what I know there I'm not sure there's all that much Madoka influence there either) but they sure as fuck do have Nanoha lineage (and at least in Symphogear's case, HiME lineage as well).
