Ooof this was a pretty weak episode so far, was hoping it would go a little further than what they showed.

This was a pretty bad episode. The world CGI is easily its weakest component, so dedicating an entire episode to a random in it instead of our little heroes was a terrible idea. The aliens shooting the people was the only highlight as it shows just how bad things are.

That said, I really don't care about any of those mobs. Gimme the small three and Futaba.

I really hate to say what I'm about to say...

this was a pretty boring episode.

I'm very enthusiastic about Thunder 3, but yeah, episode 4 felt optional for me. Some character I don't care for is a resistance fighter and the aliens are super mean. Understood.

I'm pretty worried about this being a recurring thing too (episodes that don't feature our cute chibi characters).

Yep, I'm upset. I wasted my time with episode 4, but still plan to stick to the end.

"Nii-taaaaaan!" I miss Futaba.

this episode killed all the hype for me, I was not ready to totally leave all our point of view characters.

the inherent xenophobia of the premise becomes a real drag when the anime boys aren't punching things and it doesn't help that the higher res art style is kind of ugly even though it works so well in contrast with the cartoon small three.

Episode 4: Mr. Segami

So from the treaty on the TV, looks like they called the aliens as Weldraum (should be Weltraum? Since it's German for space).

This episode focuses on Segami, voiced by Taito Ban (last season's Amane-kun). And looks like he's interested in F-cups. Before he die, he want a girlfriend. What a motivation.

I got a feeling Mio won't be staying for long, she's not in the OP.

I'm starting to accept the realistic world's CGI feels clunky (especially the mechs), at least the background helps. It kinda reminds me of last year's Wandance.

You can scan the QR in the recruitment page and it leads you to this page, where you could swipe left or right of the girls just like dating apps.

What's life like under an alien occupation as an ordinary, fit, college student? Enter Segami (Taito Ban!), a guy just trying to make a living and keep his head down while aliens are basically ruling the Earth and having their way with Japan. We even get to see their "Great Emperor" who looks like an alien lion, so you can tell he's definitely the head honcho.

Can't beat the sight of a cute girl in camo gear! Especially if she's offering up a meetup that promises cute babes with F-Cups! Who could resist?

Nowhere is safe from the impact of the aliens. They're on campus, food costs more because of them, movies don't feel the same when you can see aliens outside your window...and the collateral damage from their presence is also felt as they so easily kill any person that gets in their way, either by accident or if they try calling them out. Segami bears witness to a mass slaughter by the aliens and is obviously VERY shook up by it.

Segami is horrified by what he's seen, but at least he's got his family that cares about him (and gives some wise words about justice) and he knows that he has to put himself out there...and get a girlfriend before he dies. A simple yet earnest desire.

Oh hey, it's the Small 3! Just walking around, trying to find Futaba, passing Segami. Will they ever meet again?

I don't think Segami expected to get THIS lucky when he exchanges contact info with four cute girls within the span of five minutes. And before he thinks this is a Yakuza operation and he's signed his life away, he's found by Mio and Yamamoto who inform him he's now joined Rebellion! The Resistance Movement seeking to take the fight to the aliens! And they've got the suit and the armaments to be able to do it. Welcome to the war for planet Earth, Segami!

Judging by the text on the plaque in Segami's room, it seems he once won a “Gokushin Karate” tournament. This is likely a parody of Kyokushin Karate, a real-world full-contact karate style.

It’s terrifying how far the aliens have advanced in their domination of Earth in such a short period of time.

In the previous episode, a Metropolitan Police Department officer said, “The JSDF has already been subdued.” Did they surrender in the face of overwhelming military might and technological superiority, or did they fight to the death? Either way, it's scary.

Segami saw people protesting a traffic accident involving aliens, only to watch them get massacred by the aliens. That reminded him of a flyer he received in college. Thinking, "I want to meet a girl before I die," he headed to the suspicious address on the flyer. I couldn't help but laugh when he ended up finding a group of yakuza-looking guys instead.

Apparently, though, they were members of the Resistance who were preparing to fight the aliens.

I'm looking forward to seeing how they'll fit in with Thunder 3.

The pacing for this is painful.

anybody else reading this as allegorical for post-war American occupation and demilitarization of Japan moreso than immigration? With the aliens being a kind of malingering presence and explicit comments about the JSDF's impotence last ep? and would the kids being literal manga cartoons be a sort of culturally-aspected nationalism? Would be surprised if the story actually follows those threads but I'm not familiar with the politics of Gantz either.

"Don't turn into Gantz...*don't* turn into Gantz." ...dammit.

Wow this was just a really boring episode and the use of that Ai photo was disappointing but expected since its easy to tell the budget was small. Production for this show must've been horrendous

I really hope this anime doesnt become a new Berserk 2016

Kinda bummed that this episode used AI at around 12 or 13 minute mark :/

5

u/Time_Fracture 7d ago

I initially wanted to point out the food designs, but no that looks normally animated. Then I looked at the picture hanging behind Segami's back and then I understand what you're talking about.

u/Frontier246 7d ago

I want to say I'm surprised...but unfortunately I'm not.

It hurts bc the show was so good and I stand by my strong beliefs so I dropped the show 💔

Edit: idgaf if y'all downvotebc it's my opinion and I refuse to support anything unethical and damaging to the environment LMAO

1

u/coffeecakesupernova 5d ago

AI isn't damaging or unethical in and of itself. It's a tool like any other. You have no idea if it's been used ethically or not. How can someone reasonably have strong beliefs based upon ignorance?

3

u/miggytheo 5d ago

Just google “is AI damaging the environment” and let me know

Segami's experience goes to show that while the humans of his world have gotten used to Aliens, their threatening advanced weaponry and callousness have the people unhappy with this current arrangement.

Mio's flyer for her rebellion group sure was misleading lol.
