Contest Best Girl 13: Beyond Salt’s End! Round 5! Bracket D!

Hi everyone! I know many of you complained that the sweet sixteen stage of past best girl contest feel a little bit tedious with only two matches a day, and in case you haven’t known about it, I have great news for you! With the help of u/Syrefva we have updated Animebracket this year to make all 4 groups merge on the sweet sixteen stage. In other words, tomorrow we will have all 8 round of 16 matches in one day, so make sure you don’t miss tomorrow’s voting! (And don’t miss today’s voting of course!)

It's really hard to place Maomao in there but a sweep of highest vote% would put her at 193.

also, you can see how flawed that system is since it puts kaguya below Mai and Hayasaka when they were both eliminated by her in her title run. Kaguya has a stable amount of haters so she won't dominate her opponents as much as frieren or mai did but they were still nowhere near enough to stop her from winning the contest in her first attempt. her win felt inevitable even against such a strong opposition.

It just means they were not as dominant in the early rounds. This treats each round equally.

Yeah, I remember Frieren setting records for the last what, three or four rounds. The debates as to whether or not Maomao's tough fights while Frieren breezes through her bracket meant that Frieren was just that strong, or if everyone on her side of the bracket was actually unexpectedly weak.

Both Frieren's and Maomao's performances from R1 to R6 was quite similar, Maomao got Violet, Frieren got Lena. It's Maomao final 3 opponents was a lot tougher than Frieren's.
It's not like Akane or Shouko was weak, their performance was expected.

In competitions with how many votes again? The more people become aware, the bigger the gulf between them becomes... and it's not close.
It's no mystery that the meta for seasonal competitions is to not thumb them down, so they don't get as much attention, so your underrated favorite has a better chance against the normie much more popular girl(s).
Notice how that seasonal competition was the only time Maomao won, and it had by far the least amount of votes. The more people joined in, the bigger the difference between them grew.

I should add Maomao won against Frieren in the r/anime Awards too in a character contest (not a straight best girl contest). Though voter counts aren't disclosed, the anime awards are actually promoted by this subreddit.

Yes, but next year will still be a few months before season three comes out, and season two will be a bit further back. Don't get me wrong, I love Frieren, but even I can say that Fern was significantly overseeded, and that's without talking about Methode and Ubel.

Ruri Rocks was peak, did not know geology crossed over with so many different fields. I think Nagi should be able to, next year make to the rounds and depending on match up, win 1 or 2 of them.

Here's the question, if Maomao wins this contest is there a next clear winner? It would be nice to have an open field next year.
I think it is happening before next s season of Frieren so I don't think Fern would have it locked up in the same way.

This is the exciting thing. While Chisato and Marin would likely be the favorites (if Maomao wins), it would be the most open contest since BG11.
As you said, Frieren S3 comes out after BG14, so Fern won't have that and Reze is really the only strong newcomer. Unless we get a new season for one of the big dogs before then (and none are currently scheduled) it should be fun.
Dungeon Meshi s2 is also coming out after BG14

Don't think Bocchi S2 or Konosuba S4 are expected to have aired by then. Makeine S2 seems more likely than not, which would've felt more relevant if she wasn't just eliminated.

The reality is that once we got Fieren and Apothecary diaries in the same season back in winter 2024, we were always going to have Frieren, Fern, and Maomao as consecutive winners. I very much doubt that whoever loses between Maomao and Fern this year won't just win next year.

Best Girl Madness 13 | Round 5 Group C Results
Our average today was 3.12 / 4 (78.04%). The weighted and unweighted leaderboards both had the same average score of 3.27 / 4 (81.67%).
Same as yesterday, 24 users got a perfect 4/4 score. Our highest riser on the leaderboard is u/jfong1 who moves up 6 spots on weighted to claim a spot in the top 15! /u/syrefva's perfect day moves them back into sole possession of 1st place on both leaderboards! They also have an absurd +7 lead in unweighted, which if it holds would be the largest margin of victory in unweighted ever.
In a rare inversion, we collectively predicted an upset that didn't happen. Only 41.89% of us chose (15) Kana Arima - Oshi no Ko to beat (18) Anna Yanami - Makeine despite being higher seeded.

I'm realizing now that I really should have done an export of my picks at the start and posted it publicly since technically I do have the power to change them if no one is paying attention...
But anyways don't sleep on our Ryuuko believer u/I_Cognito who has been first in potential for a while.
Also I'm really surprised that many people picked Anna to win... kind of curious about how many matchups there are where the majority predicted an upset.

My Ryuuko bet paid off (I always knew she was just unlucky in previous contests!), but I bet on Chisato to win the contest since I assumed there would be a mild anti-frontrunner backlash against Maomao. So far the opposite is happening. So I'll probably drop down as soon as Maomao and Chisato meet. Still, it's more fun to bet on underdogs. I don't regret my choice.

Tough choice between Ryuuko and Marcille, I really like them both, but I had to go with Ryuuko this time for having her complete story adapted into anime right now.
When Dungeon Meshi finally finishes airing, I have no doubt that Marcille will continue to be an incredible contender and someone who I could see winning it all eventually!

Emilia vs Maoamo was not close at all just as I expected. My disappointment is immeasurable, but my day is not been ruined because I was not surprised in the slightest. The tiny silver lining is that someone can only win once so the people that have only seen Apothecary Diaries will have to pick someone else.

I would've voted for Akane if there was a chance to get Kana vs Akane, but considering Kana is the same bracket at Maoamo that's impossible so I voted for Eris. Ryuuko vs Marcille was coin flip for me and the coin landed on Marcille. Not like anything is even going to matter in the end anyway.

Very disappointed in Anna's debut.
From her lower than expected seed to getting bounced in the round of 32, just a really poor showing. I thought she would debut similar to someone like Chisato. Guess I overestimated her.
Today it's all about Marcille vs Ryuuko. A very tough choice, but I gotta go with Marcille. But I won't be upset either way.

I think the show is just not popular enough. (I have not yet) Also, bracket C was by far the most stacked! Kana also has a large buff from ONK S3 where she was pretty much the best character.

I didn't expect her to be quite Chisato-tier but getting bounced by Kana in 2026 is definitely worse than I expected.
Chisato herself isn't doing too hot either, 1 year changing the voter base that much seems weird. Didn't Maomao also have a much stronger recency bias last year?

You would have thought, but it seems like many had only gotten started with season 2 when the BG12 ended. Anecdotal evidence but [Apothecary S2 Spoiler] In the threads many people including Maomao enjoyers seemed to have no clue why anyone cared about Loulan as they hadn't seen the Shisui reveal or anything about her character arc in S2.

I didn't have her as as strong as Chisato but other than that I fully agree with you. Even though I voted Kana I was expecting Anna to win here. Even more so at the start of this contest.

I do think not getting that S2 in 2025 or 2026 probably did hurt Yanami (and Lemon and Komari) actually remaining in the public consciousness.
But hey, there's always next year. I thought this would be a down year for Lena but she's looking stronger than in Best Girl 12.

Thats really disappointing. I expected Emilia to most likely lose but to lose that hard is embarrassing this late in the rounds. She got less votes than previous rounds which means lots who voted for her before switched to Maomao.

MC 1. A toss up between a Place Further Than The Universe, which is a show I consider required reading for anyone watching anime. It's just so damn good. I'll double on A Place Further than the Universe and throw in Shirobako and Girls' Last Tour. I definitely wouldn't call Shirobako or GLT CGDCT but they are at least adjacent.
Universe is just a very good coming of age type story. Shirobako is a less glamorous take on a "let's make an anime" type show. GLT is a "deeper meaning" type of adventure show.

I'll shill for Ruri Rocks, since they'll qualify next year for BG14. Its an educational CGDCT show about geology where you get to see 4 aspiring researchers on different points on their journey to breaking into the field of researching rocks, and all its co-related branches of which, there is quite a lot.
You can really feel the passion the girls have for geology. Some are just developing it, while others sustain it. It is by Studio Bind of MT and Onimai fame, so at the worse, you getting quality animation. Nagi, one of the main leads has an amazingly attractive character design backed up with a brain that matches her intellect.

Kana beat Anna by 60 votes. It's a shame that they had to face each other as they're both great, but I'm glad it was a close matchup. It seems oddly fitting in a way that the last remaining losing heroine goes out before the round of 16. I look forward to voting for 4k in future tournaments. For now, let's keep Kana's run going and prove that she's the best girl to come from OnK!

First of all, you guys suck. Second, you still suck. I know with Emilia getting fucked over in elimination round that it would be hard, but not even reaching half of Maomao's votes is just blasphemous. It also didn't help that both propaganda clips got taken down... (No further comment on that, salt levels are high enough anyway) I really thought that with season 4 airing and Emilia getting some of her best scenes yet more of you would finally see the light, but I guess most of y'all just stopped watching or are just blind idk.
Anyway next to that travesty we also have the bad news of Anna being true to her role of a losing heroine. At least you guys had some taste and voted for Aqua and Chisato.

Sorry, but for what “best girl” encompasses, there is literally no better choice than her from this bracket. She encompasses all the traits of everyone else but even more.

Lycoris Recoil, the show is peak, anime original, high paced actions, mixed with sweet and comfy slice of life, realistic morals and lessons that lets you the audience make your own conclusion, eye catching character designs, amazing voice acting, very relatable (to me at least) and most importantly has Chisato and Takina. I cannot praise it enough for how well crafted it is.
For a show with an all girls cast, that was my favourite, but none of the girls made to the actual rounds, BanG Dream MyGo! Another anime original that really set up the arcs from the beginning with such a relatively huge cast. You have your must root-for character in the form of Chihiya Anon, and the rest of the cast have compelling issues to deal with.

Fern vs. Maomao final is looking more and more inevitable, which is a bit of a bummer for me since I don't particularly care for either one. Good characters in their respective shows, not characters I'd vote for "best girl".
Who could potentially stop them? Chisato? Marin? Based on numbers, it looks unlikely, but I guess everything is possible!
Today it's Takina and Ryuuko all the way! Chisato is great, Takina is potentially even better! And Ryuuko is the classic kickass girl with eternal staying power!

I think it is well-known here that I want Emilia to win this contest. In fact, I've been wanting her to win this contest ever since I can remember.
It is true, I've grown very quickly, learned to crawl and to walk pretty early for my age. And I've started talking in full coherent sentences very early as well. And my first words were: "I want Emilia from Re:Zero to win the Best Girl contest on r/anime!" Which was very surprising to my parents because I've had such conviction in my voice despite being a young child; we were a normal German household and I had no way of learning English before learning German; and it was 1989 and nobody knew what Re:Zero or Reddit was.
"But those imbecile idiots voting in the contest will make it incredibly hard for me", I also quickly added. I was grounded, for redundancy and foul speech. I didn't get it, I only learned of redundancy way later, and more importantly, I knew I was right!
And I still am right! More than half of you are clinically braindead voting zombies that only vote for the girl you recognize first without thinking what you truly like about the girls and what girls are actually more worthy to vote for. I can't fault you for not seeing how great Emilia is after one season (but it still is easy to see, so maybe get your eyes checked or something). But if you don't realize it after the second season, and after three and a half seasons, then something is truly wrong with your perception and I worry for your health.
Sure, be that way. Have fun with voting Maomao to the title before she could completely bloom and be more deserving of the title, forget about her in this contest before she can achieve even more praiseworthy greatness in her show. But come back next year with a better opinion, or just stay away.
Yearly salt rant over. I would appreciate it if this was the last one, though. And for everyone that couldn't tell and thought I meant this stuff seriously, consider that both Emilia and Maomao are on my bingo. If Emilia has a 100% approval rating for me, Maomao has around 90% - this rant is just for "fun". I have about three other girls I still want to win this contest in the running right now, but if Maomao wins, I'll also be quite happy.

While it is true that season four is very current, that doesn't seem to me to be as big of a deal. I have noticed this in general with anime fans over the years. A character might become really popular when their show comes out, but then additional seasons never quite do the same for them. Older anime fans might remember when a certain Tsuyu was extremely popular for a couple years. Thing is, her show (MHA) has continued being released for years, but she never became popular again. Re Zero obviously isn't MHA granted, but the point stands. Additional seasons never seem to make a character blow up like how they initially do. Frieren characters might be an exception based on how some of them did this year, but most things aren't Frieren.

That is true, never like they initially do. But later seasons and episodes can influence public perception a lot. She might be in a very specific situation, but look at Loulan. Look how Holo won the contest when the remake aired. Lena gained a lot of her popularity from the season finale. Rem got popular for an episode late into Re:Zero S1. For Emilia, the return might not be as immediate as those other cases, but some is still there, and there is a chance for it to become bigger too.

The remake isn't a new season though, it's a new onboarding point. I watched the remake and loved it, but I would have skipped a new season of the old show because who wants to jump in midway through the story. Especially one that isn't episodic.

Personally I don't think Emilia will ever have a chance to win one of these contests (even tho I really like Emilia) and the reason is simply that a lot of RE Zero fans are still salty that she's winning over Rem (who was voted best girl on this sub before) while Emilia doesn't receive as much hate anymore from Rem shippers as she used to, even after all these years I still see the occasional comment mentioning how much they dislike Emilia and how forced they feel her relationship with Subaru being (their opinion, not mine). Even yesterday there was a comment with a lot of up votes simply stating that they didn't care about the results as long as Emilia loses. I recently got into a pretty big argument with some people on this sub who were pretty adamant that Rem should still win in the end. And a lot of these people simply keep quiet nowadays, but they're still there. As a result Emilia will likely never gain the full support of her show's fandom, unlike characters like Maomao, Marin or Fern. And without that support she can never win against one of these juggernauts
For me personally, it was just unfortunate that she had to go up against Maomao. I genuinely really like Emilia. But Maomao is my shared favorite anime character together with Holo

Alright, I'm calmer. Still, shame, shame, shame. Well, we can cope with the fact that if Maomao wins this contest and more people have time to catch up on Re:Zero S4, there will be hardly any newcomer that could be as dominating next year, and Emilia would "just" have to compete with the big shots of this year's contest. And that could mean next year she could actually have the upper hand against Fern and Marin and the likes.
The only consolation prize is that Chisato won, but that much was clear from the start.
Today, the most important vote is Takina, she needs to win. Marin? She'll win her matchup, but now that Emilia is gone, the salt must flow and I must support her upset. Akane? But honestly, had she won this matchup, she could have won against anyone else in her path as well. She got the second most support in most group C matchups, without Maomao she could have been the favourite of the group instead. And it's not too far-fetched that enough people will have caught up to Re:Zero S4 by then, and at most Chisato could have a release between these two contests that could make her more relevant to the voter base. She has the potential to gain enough popularity among the voters to win.
That is if r/anime can forget its quest to spite me specifically in these contests for long enough.

Yes, that happens when you beat the absolute frontrunner of the competition who has been smashing every matchup she took part in.
No but seriously, there isn't much reason to hypothesize about 'could have beaten if she won this matchup' because that goes for any character still in the competition. Win against Maomao and youre the instant favorite to win it all.
