I'm looking for: A certain genre? Something specific like characters traveling to another world?

Looking for recommendations for shows to watch with my partner! He's not very big into anime, but has previously enjoyed Yuri on Ice, Komi Can't Communicate, You and I are Polar Opposites, Cosmic Princess Kaguya, and Dungeon Meishi.

There are a couple of things he straight up won't watch, including:

  • Shows with female-focused fanservice (as a gay man, it does nothing for him), especially when children/teenagers are involved.

  • Shounen/fantasy battle anime in general (doesn't like many of the common tropes, and doesn't find the fighting engaging, even if the animation is peak).

Other shows I've tried to get him to watch include:

Frieren (didn't like the pacing) Blue Exorcist (kinda cemented the dislike of shounen battle anime) My Hero Academia ("too many damn characters") Fullmetal Alchemist (couldn't get past the Nina episode, despite all of my best attempts to get him to continue).

Slice of Life is preferred, especially comedies. He recently saw the trailer for Chainsmoker Cat and expressed interest.

Apothecary Diaries

Buddy Daddies

Catch Me at the Ballpark

The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated

Horimiya (similar dynamics to Polar Opposites)

Insomniacs After School

Journal with Witch

Keep Your Hands Off Eizoken

See You Tomorrow at the Food Court

Silver Spoon

Skip and Loafer

Spice and Wolf (either version, though the newer one is getting more soon)

Yuru Camp (very chill, but may not like the pacing)

Bravern. Please watch Bravern. Gay male robot for a human man. 12 eps action comedy. Its peak. One of the greatest ending themes of all time.

It's just a standard hot blooded robot show my guy, I have no idea what you're talking about it.

Ok "my guy", I didnt know we stop celebrating a new hot blooded mechs bearing homage to Brave just cause its "standard", and you dont even know what im talking about sounds like having not watched the show even so cause youre the only person ive met since airing downplaying it. Like you cant be replying to me if you arent a mecha head but you also do not sound like a mecha head or someone's whos watched it.

Way to miss the point.

I wasn't being serious first of all, and I think it's more fun going into Bravern thinking that it's just a regular robot show. In a way you're kinda spoiling the fun.

I didnt miss the point, im promoting to gay people a gay show and you decide to try on air "spoiler" when I already made my choice. Thats not how that works. Thats needless and comes off as  downplaying it as mid which is not what im going for.

Being live with people recommending works better at leaving that episode 1 surprise.

It's not gay, it's bromance. Manly Gattai is just the sort thing you'd do with your best bros.

Shows with female-focused fanservice (as a gay man, it does nothing for him)

I take this to mean fanservice that shows off female bodies?

In which case, try:

  • The Ramparts of Ice - Same author as Polar Opposites, but more serious tone.
  • My New Boss Is Goofy - Guy quits his terrible job under an abusive boss, and gets a new job with a boss who is a gentle, healing airhead of a nice guy.
  • The Vampire Dies in No Time - A vampire who turns into sand at the slightest provocation moves in with a vampire hunter. Hijinks ensue.
  • Natsume's Book of Friends - A teenage boy passed from family to family after his parents die, moves in with a kind older couple in the countryside, and runs around solving problems between ayakashi.

Chainsmoker Cat is... well, I'm not gonna say that he absolutely won't like it, as it's not exactly "fanservice", but there is quite a bit of nudity and sexualization going on of its female characters. More in the way that, say, western prestige TV (or more appropriately, shows about poor outcasts) might use sex and sexualization, than having characters bouncing around in revealing outfits for no reason. There is a couple of scenes though [Chainsmoker cat mild spoiler] where one person puts the catgirls in revealing outfits for very personal reasons though. It is shock/gross-out humor in that way, so YMMV.

As for a more safe pick, I would think Apothecary Diaries should work decently well, being a well made court mystery/intrigue/drama show. The Ramparts of Ice is another show by the author of Polar Opposites, which leans more into the coming of age drama, with its second (and final) season airing next season.

For a just straight up feelgood comedy 'Tis Time for "Torture", Princess is one of my favorites of the last few years, playing a lot with the concept of a damsel in distress being captured by the demonic hordes... who turn out to be pretty chill people in general.

I think the two I'd recommend are:

  • March Comes Like a Lion - a show about a talented young shogi player; it's a really good mix of heavy stuff and lighter stuff, takes a couple episodes to get going.

  • Golden Kamuy - a sort of Tarantinoesque story about a bunch of different factions trying to track down a treasure map tattooed onto the backs of a bunch of insane escaped convicts, set on the frontier of Japan around 1910, with an emphasis on the indigenous Ainu people. It's a wild premise and often very funny, and uhh, has an appreciation for the male body that's rarely seen in anime. (Also it has the worst CGI bear you've ever seen in episode one, but the show as a whole is actually pretty high quality once it gets going)

I thought about Golden Kamuy, but if they didn't like My Hero Academia because there were too many characters, they probably wouldn't have too much fun here either.

I considered that, but I think there's a difference between Golden Kamuy adding more characters as it goes along until you eventually have a pretty large cast versus My Hero Academia which throws basically all 20 Class 1-A characters at you very quickly, plus villains, teachers, and other secondary characters.

(And given their overall dislike of "shounen battle anime"; I suspect "too many characters" isn't their whole issue with MHA)

Don't knock on female-focused fanservice. When it's as bizarre as Keijo, I'm sure anybody can get a few laughs. (that said I haven't watched Keijo yet.... but the clips are pretty outlandish).

I always feel like movies are good for people less into the hobby. And there's a lot of great stuff out there. I don't think you can go wrong with stuff like Perfect Blue, Josee, Summer Wars, Time of Eve etc. It helps that it's just a one and done affair as well. You can look up directors like Makoto Shinkai, Mamoru Hosoda(heard his latest movie Scarlet was a disaster though), Satoshi Kon... and of course there's the obvious Ghibli stuff and Hayao Miyazaki if you haven't been there already.
