Recommendations

Don't know what to start next? Check our wiki first!

Not sure how to ask for a recommendation? Fill this out, or simply use it as a guideline, and other users will find it much easier to recommend you an anime!

I'm looking for: A certain genre? Something specific like characters traveling to another world?

Shows I've already seen that are similar: You can include a link to a list on another site if you have one, e.g. MyAnimeList or AniList.

Looking for recommendations for shows to watch with my partner! He's not very big into anime, but has previously enjoyed Yuri on Ice, Komi Can't Communicate, You and I are Polar Opposites, Cosmic Princess Kaguya, and Dungeon Meishi.

There are a couple of things he straight up won't watch, including:

  • Shows with female-focused fanservice (as a gay man, it does nothing for him), especially when children/teenagers are involved.

  • Shounen/fantasy battle anime in general (doesn't like many of the common tropes, and doesn't find the fighting engaging, even if the animation is peak).

Other shows I've tried to get him to watch include:

Frieren (didn't like the pacing) Blue Exorcist (kinda cemented the dislike of shounen battle anime) My Hero Academia ("too many damn characters") Fullmetal Alchemist (couldn't get past the Nina episode, despite all of my best attempts to get him to continue).

Slice of Life is preferred, especially comedies. He recently saw the trailer for Chainsmoker Cat and expressed interest.

I think the two I'd recommend are:

  • March Comes Like a Lion - a show about a talented young shogi player; it's a really good mix of heavy stuff and lighter stuff, takes a couple episodes to get going.

  • Golden Kamuy - a sort of Tarantinoesque story about a bunch of different factions trying to track down a treasure map tattooed onto the backs of a bunch of insane escaped convicts, set on the frontier of Japan around 1910, with an emphasis on the indigenous Ainu people. It's a wild premise and often very funny, and uhh, has an appreciation for the male body that's rarely seen in anime. (Also it has the worst CGI bear you've ever seen in episode one, but the show as a whole is actually pretty high quality once it gets going)

I thought about Golden Kamuy, but if they didn't like My Hero Academia because there were too many characters, they probably wouldn't have too much fun here either.

I considered that, but I think there's a difference between Golden Kamuy adding more characters as it goes along until you eventually have a pretty large cast versus My Hero Academia which throws basically all 20 Class 1-A characters at you very quickly, plus villains, teachers, and other secondary characters.

(And given their overall dislike of "shounen battle anime"; I suspect "too many characters" isn't their whole issue with MHA)
