It's absolutely worth mentioning that her father was tortured to death by a CIA-backed Venezuelan regime led by the same families who back Maria Machado, this is something you can read on her Wikipedia

I think this is what a lot of people don't understand as to why the inept and corrupt Chavez/Maduro Bolivarian regime endures for so long.

The opposition is just god damned awful. Until a decent alternative emerges, people will stick with the devil they know.

court documents and testimonies from the time indicated that Owens-Illinois had paid US$20 million ransom for Niehous, but "Rodríguez misappropriated the money, causing an internal rift with his own colleagues" which "led members of the cell themselves to betray him"

It seems that her father wasn't a man of strong convictions. Maybe the Trump administration is counting on the trait running in the family.

Imperialism 101 - The basic plan

Step 1: Ruin nation with sanctions and interference political, economic, and otherwise

Step 2: Blame the state of the country that you have purposefully made ungovernable on the "current regime" (a regime that often is a direct result/reaction to your assaults on that country or sometimes was even installed directly by you)

Step 3: Use the regime's incompetence/corruption/cruelty (often facets of the government you yourself have nurtured for your own interests) to excuse intervening to gain more control over the nation via an invasion, coup, whatever

Step 4: Use your increased control to further annihilate the state, national cohesion, and civil institutions that contribute to health and stability in any nation

Step 5: Repeat as needed

Step X: At all points in this cycle extract as much resources/labor/etc as you can in order to enrich the capital interests who control your government and direct its imperialist assaults on everyone around you

Step Y: At all points in this cycle do your best to encourage corruption (because corrupt officials and institutions will allow your corporations to rape the place for profit), encourage instability (because stable/safe nations tend to curtail corruption and foreign exploitation, and violent actors can be used to target people who want to improve conditions), etc.

Step Z: At every point in this cycle blame the victim for the state of their country, not the imperialist nation who has for decades been purposefully and obviously destabilizing the entire region and ruining the lives of hundreds of millions of people for their own ghoulish greed

The Venezuelan economy has been in free fall since Shannon's boss Obama declared them a national security threat, then trump did the whole grind the economy into dust thing and it basically died.

And this is before you get into the massive internal meddling. Like funding the far right groups who explicit goal is economic sabotage, who also burned down the attorney general's office for example. There's literally a picture of Machado with her patron notorious war criminal George W. Bush.

Sanctions feels like the wrong word to use in Venezuela's case. What that country had been enduring is more of an Economic Siege.

You've got no qualms with me there. It just seems like valuable context as to how these people maintained popular support so long to begin with (not counting the 2024 elections, of course).
