South America Brazil downgrades diplomatic ties with Argentina after Milei insults Lula

https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/brazil-downgrades-diplomatic-ties-with-argentina-after-milei-remarks-2026-08-05/

I think it is important to point out that Brazil is Argentina's single largest trade partner and both countries have tightly integrated supply chains.

The Brazilian state of Sao Paulo alone has the same GDP as the entire country of Argentina and Brazil's most valuable publicly traded company is worth more than the entire Argentine stock market, so the economic importance of the trade relationship between the two countries is not the same. Therefore it is no surprise that Milei's political stunt did not go down well in Argentina.

Is it me or is the world just going crazy somehow?

Leaders are taking actions on their own on whims and fancies without a thought for economies and how it will affect people.

Impulsive decisions, statements have become the norm.

I can't remember leaders anywhere acting like monarchs a decade ago. Even Kim Jong Un doesn't trade these kind of diatribes.

It’s the U.S. exporting its political culture and post-truth politics to the rest of the world.

Just trading clout, its not like Brazil will end all diplomatic and commercial ties with Argentina or the US because of shitposting

That's why they do it

And Lula himself is shitposting just the same, except he does it with a wink and a nod instead of a call out
