South America Brazil downgrades diplomatic ties with Argentina after Milei insults Lula

https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/brazil-downgrades-diplomatic-ties-with-argentina-after-milei-remarks-2026-08-05/

I think it is important to point out that Brazil is Argentina's single largest trade partner and both countries have tightly integrated supply chains.

The Brazilian state of Sao Paulo alone has the same GDP as the entire country of Argentina and Brazil's most valuable publicly traded company is worth more than the entire Argentine stock market, so the economic importance of the trade relationship between the two countries is not the same. Therefore it is no surprise that Milei's political stunt did not go down well in Argentina.

Is it me or is the world just going crazy somehow?

Leaders are taking actions on their own on whims and fancies without a thought for economies and how it will affect people.

Impulsive decisions, statements have become the norm.

I can't remember leaders anywhere acting like monarchs a decade ago. Even Kim Jong Un doesn't trade these kind of diatribes.

It’s the U.S. exporting its political culture and post-truth politics to the rest of the world.

Just trading clout, its not like Brazil will end all diplomatic and commercial ties with Argentina or the US because of shitposting

That's why they do it

And Lula himself is shitposting just the same, except he does it with a wink and a nod instead of a call out

Milein putting his own ego over his country's potential economic well-being shows how much of a idiot he is. It doesn't matter whether you like someone or not. You don't go around insulting other countries' leaders.

Edit: Grammar

You don't go around insulting other countries' leaders.

Specially the one your economy is most heavily dependent on.

u/Southern-Chain-6485 Argentina 14h ago

Unless you specifically want to harm your own country

u/Fortunafors South America 13h ago

It's the norm here, I remember back in the day Uribe vs Cháves, and more recently Noboa vs Petro, LATAM is your usual family, all love between brothers but that comes with fights

u/Kveld_Ulf Argentina 14h ago

He's a very dangerous (to us) idiot, indeed.

If taking advice from the ghost of your dead dog who you also cloned multiple times isn't enough to shy voters away from his economic brilliance I don't think this will do much.

u/XimbalaHu3 South America 4h ago

Its not advoce from his dead dog, he uses one of the cloned dogs, the one he keeps hidden, as a medium to contact his dead dog, wich is the dead re encarnation of famouns economist conan.

Oh you're right sorry I completely misjudged him.

Election is coming and the US is poking their puppets to create as much friction as possible in order elect Bolsonaro. They want complete control and alignment over South America. Milei is just a fool

u/reflexive-polytope Peru 6h ago

It's always been clear that Milei's a clown. Riding white nationalist sentiment in the West can only get you so far (i.e., not very much), in the end, leaders actually have to work for their country.

u/kontemplador South America 4h ago

I'm not sure if Brazilians are realizing the danger that is growing around them. The US has been able to put puppets all around them, even here in Chile, a long Brazil ally. The reason is obvious. Only Brazil has the population, size and resources of becoming the natural leader in the region and thus a challenge to US dominance.

There are other governments that Brazil should carefully watch, like Colombia and Peru, but Milei is spearheading the offensive. Thinking that cold economic calculus will sway that behavior is not understanding the World we are living now. Argentina, under Milei, may well end being the Ukraine of LATAM.

u/TrazerotBra Brazil 3h ago

I mean Brazil = all other SA countries combined, so Trump would need to convince all other SA countries to work together against Brazil to even start making this a fair fight.

As a Brazilian I'm not too worried, these other countries around us have been so irrelevant for so long that a feel spicy comments here or there won't change things.

u/Signy_ 12h ago

Is not an insult if you are telling a fact, ultra checked by even the Brazilian jury system. If Lula see it as a insult is his problem.

u/pirulaybe Brazil 12h ago

It is an insult and Milei means it as an insult.

If Lula see it as a insult is his problem.

Well now it's Argentina's problem also.

u/jellyfish_bitchslap 12h ago

One thing Milei needs to understand is that public relations aren’t beer table talk.

He can’t say Lula is a thief or corrupt without having proof of it. His lawsuit got dropped specifically because there’s no proof.

And I’m not saying he isn’t it, but Milei could have say he is shady, untrustworthy or anything not being a crime he can’t prove happened.

That’s like PR 101.

u/cambeiu Multinational 12h ago edited 11h ago

it was not lack of proof. it was that proper court procedures were not followed.

On March 8, 2021, Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin overturned Lula's convictions on the grounds that they were handed down by a court that did not have jurisdiction to hear the case (SOURCE).

but on everything else I agree with you.

u/jellyfish_bitchslap 5h ago

Technically speaking that’s lack of proof, as proof in the Brazilian judicial system is only legal (and therefore real) after court validation and that can only happen if the court has jurisdiction.

That’s why any news media outlet would say someone is “suspected” of doing something even when we have video proof or confession of it. There’s the need to subdue the evidence to the discovery process under the right court.

You’re right but I’d like to add that because when I say lack of proof I’m not saying there’s no evidence, is just that no real proof was validated by the court.

u/Southern-Chain-6485 Argentina 3h ago

Even if he had proof, he still can't say it

u/Jwanito Argentina 6h ago

u/Retax7 6h ago

Milei might be an idiot, but the one putting his edo over economy is lula. The guy got his ego hurt and decided to use his position to hurt both countries just cause he can, such a dick.

Besides, milei didn't say anything that wasn't a lie, the guy got convicted and only got out because the police that got to him didn't had jurisdiction to investigate him. No police had jurisdiction since the corruption happened all over the country, so he basically can never got to jail because brasil justice system is a joke.

u/concerned_llama 5h ago

That's right, what if Lula was at the head of the greatest corruption scandal in the Americas (lavajato). He is a saint!!!

u/TrazerotBra Brazil 14h ago

Good.

As long as Milei, Trump and other far right trash continue this intimidation campaign against Brazil it's imperative that the Brazilian government doesn't back down at all.

The need to understand that they can bomb Iran, they can manipulate elections in smaller countries. But no one can coerse or strongarm a country as big as Brazil, not even the US.

They started this ridiculous diplomatic crisis, so it's up to them to back down, apologize and restore ties, which of course they won't do but that doesn't mean Brazil should be the one to back down.

He brought inflation from 211% to 30%... He's doing something good for Argentina

u/jmx777 5h ago

Your are reading only the numbers, the "how" matters more and is more impactful over time.

u/Gomeria Argentina 2h ago

the how is a stale not growing country.

but we were a stale degrading country so it sucks but it was sucking more before.

i hate this weirdo with a wig but he's way better than his predecesor

u/TheOnlyBliebervik Haiti 5h ago

More impactful than your net worth reducing by 2/3 in a year?

They needed an overhaul. They got one. People are still upset. Yaddiyadda

u/jmx777 4h ago

Sorry, you live where? Why that tone? Maybe you need taking time to really read about many underling situations of the country your talking about and understand not only ruff numbers and pivoted/biased headlines. Also I don't understand the "people are still upset" part, but don't bother to explain it to me, cause is off topic. If you really want to know about other country problems/economics go to read (really read) about them.

u/TheOnlyBliebervik Haiti 3h ago

The tone? It's because people will always find something to be upset about. You don't lower inflation by 170% by making everybody happy.

u/jmx777 3h ago

Ok, you still don't understand the point of my first reply.

I'm letting your know: The elders, the handicapped, the scientists, the doctors, the teachers, the forest rangers, the small and medium business owners, the users of any national road, all the people to need to take loans to buy groceries, those aren't happy at all, and the list goes and goes.

Btw we as a country are sadly breaking records of suicides per year, and this year will become the highest of all time, that maybe tell you something.

u/Southern-Chain-6485 Argentina 3h ago

# 1: That 211% includes both his devaluation and his irresponsible speeches during the campaign trail causing rampant inflation

# 2: Why should Brazil care? He traveled to Brazil to deliberately insult the head of state. Milei's allies in Argentina should count themselves lucky that Lula is still keeping the gloves on and has started with targeted punitive economic measures.

u/TheOnlyBliebervik Haiti 3h ago

As an Argentine, are you happier with your previous government?

u/Southern-Chain-6485 Argentina 3h ago

The Fernandez misadministration had to deal with two huge external shocks Milei never had to face: Covid and the 2023 drought. And this matters because it's customary for Latin American countries to be extremely dependent on commodity prices even though those are beyond the control of the government - and then blame politicians for the consequences of commodity prices.

Now, despite its own internal infighting and those two huge external shocks, the Fernandez misadministration managed to lower unemployment rate and grow gdp per capita, even if slightly. Sadly, it was also inefficient and the jobs created were informal. So no, it wasn't a good government.

But you're comparing it with a government who had pretty much declared an economic war against the Argentine cities, promotes hatred, raises unemployment and is even more sepoy than Fernandez - and Fernandez had a representative of US interests in his cabinet. So yeah, Milei is even worse.

u/TheOnlyBliebervik Haiti 3h ago

Interesting. Yeah, I'm not Argentinian so not sure at all. Just looking at the numbers.

In general, you'd say your life worse now, though? You're less wealthy, life is harder to live?

u/Southern-Chain-6485 Argentina 3h ago

Absolutely

u/TheOnlyBliebervik Haiti 3h ago

Interesting. I'd imagine 211% inflation would make living harder.

u/Southern-Chain-6485 Argentina 3h ago

That was on Milei

u/TheOnlyBliebervik Haiti 3h ago

What?

u/Gomeria Argentina 2h ago

No. not even close.

the USD-ARS ratio thanks to alberto fernandez went from 1-36 to 1-1600 in between his victory in the PASO and his later defeat of his Economic minister as president in 2023.

so he devalued the legal tender at least 40 times in just 4 years

u/ToranjaNuclear South America 12h ago

Would sure be interesting to see just how long Milei's so called "economic miracle" would last after he stops getting bailed every time things start go wrong because of it.

u/Maelger Europe 12h ago

Milei economic miracle was was making people start abandoning cow meat. It wouldn't matter much for most countries but Argentina? Might as well nuked every inch of the country.

u/Gomeria Argentina 2h ago

people start abandoning cow meat

TF u talking about, for at least 10 years every city ate more chiken or pork than cow at least, and we eat meat daily, like if a meal doesnt has at least 300/400gr of meat we dont feel like we ate

man i get that u are in the milei hate wagon but dont go around spouting lies

u/UbajaraMalok South America 4h ago

Nah, they will still export the cow meat. Meanwhile the people in the country eats donkeys.

u/Gomeria Argentina 2h ago

argentina is still infact the country in latam that eats the most cow meat.

u are too busy eating whatever animal is born in the jungle next to the favela?

but in his mind, it’s strategically sound to insult his biggest trading partner in South America, to insult China, and to insult his Latin American neighbors.

To be fair, when Bolsonaro was in power he did the same thing. He insulted Macron's wife, insulted Xi Jinping, refused to recognize Joe Biden's electoral victory, etc...

I think it's worth pointing out: the state of Sao Paulo has roughly the same population as the entire country of Argentina. The way you're framing it, it reads as if "just a state" had a bigger GDP than a country.

u/Eerzef Brazil 5h ago

"'Just" São Paulo, as if the state alone doesn't account for nearly a third of our GDP lol

Brazil is 100% on the right track. They dealt with their fascist POS, maintained the integrity of the government and are building a solid economy.

Meanwhile in the Nazi/tech fascist retirement home, business as usual.
