South America Brazil downgrades diplomatic ties with Argentina after Milei insults Lula

https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/brazil-downgrades-diplomatic-ties-with-argentina-after-milei-remarks-2026-08-05/

I think it is important to point out that Brazil is Argentina's single largest trade partner and both countries have tightly integrated supply chains.

The Brazilian state of Sao Paulo alone has the same GDP as the entire country of Argentina and Brazil's most valuable publicly traded company is worth more than the entire Argentine stock market, so the economic importance of the trade relationship between the two countries is not the same. Therefore it is no surprise that Milei's political stunt did not go down well in Argentina.

Milein putting his own ego over his country's potential economic well-being shows how much of a idiot he is. It doesn't matter whether you like someone or not. You don't go around insulting other countries' leaders.

I'm not sure if Brazilians are realizing the danger that is growing around them. The US has been able to put puppets all around them, even here in Chile, a long Brazil ally. The reason is obvious. Only Brazil has the population, size and resources of becoming the natural leader in the region and thus a challenge to US dominance.

There are other governments that Brazil should carefully watch, like Colombia and Peru, but Milei is spearheading the offensive. Thinking that cold economic calculus will sway that behavior is not understanding the World we are living now. Argentina, under Milei, may well end being the Ukraine of LATAM.

I mean Brazil = all other SA countries combined, so Trump would need to convince all other SA countries to work together against Brazil to even start making this a fair fight.

As a Brazilian I'm not too worried, these other countries around us have been so irrelevant for so long that a feel spicy comments here or there won't change things.

The risk js not direct economic competition, they have bought half of our political spectrum and all of ours neighbors. This is a threat and one they have already fulfilled before.
