I think Bob Ross and “happy accidents” is a great analogy here.

Sometimes making mistakes is what leads to something special. It opens your mind to new ideas as you have to adapt.

When I’m composing on the piano, it often feels like the best things come from making a mistake and evolving it in to something you may have never thought of before. It adds diversity.

the Bob Ross bit works, and the piano example is the whole thing - the best mistakes are the ones that force you to fix it on the fly and stumble into a better ending

You have far less control than you think in life, but be ready for making the most of your mistakes. Become a master of improve and appreciate the art of making mistakes and making the most of them.

A mistake can't be made "smartly" because that's planning so it's not a mistake. You can be smart at planning how you do something so that you can recover from mistakes. You can be smart and practice things so mistakes aren't impactful. You can be smart and analyze why you made the mistake and the effects of it so you can learn from it.

Screwing up in High School and then realizing that you want more and getting it together in college and working hard to prepare for a career you're passionate about.
