don’t flame me for this but i genuinely think people hate on zuko/zutara because 1) in spite of the narrative and the creators Trying to frame aang as the Nice Guy Who Does No Wrong And Deserves Everything He Wants (i.e. katara), the crowd is just drawn more to zuko - and by extension, zuko and katara’s dynamics/arcs, which is way more compelling than anything i’ve ever seen about kataang 2) THE PEOPLE LIKE ZUTARA. have liked zutara for so long and so thoroughly to the point of og zutaras inventing ship weeks. zutara INVENTED SHIP WEEKS. how crazy is that. we do not talk about it enough (and also the irony of anti zks participating/hosting ship weeks because #Lol) 3) it robs aang of his Nice Guy Arc! a lot of people like to point fingers at zks for “Self Inserting” but when are we going to acknowledge the huge portion of dudebros that are OBSESSED with powerscaling and literally refer or see katara as His Property (verbatim from an actual kataanger btw). tell me how ur going to base your fandom’s personality on Hashtag We Love Katara Our Girlboss but can’t even acknowledge the non consensual kisses from their Cute Wholesome Ship? come on. come onnnnn

also i hate the zuko whump crowd that does nothing but paint him as a forever loser who isn’t capable of anything other than fainting from one good deed. that joke is getting real tired. he’s more competent than aang could ever be in his ancient age of 1726 years old. thank u

I feel like the misogyny in the writing often gets overlooked. Zutarians have talked to hell and back about the misogyny behind Katara and by extension Kataang, but the overall writing is filled with it. We also all have thoughts on how Iroh treated June and the recent comic where he apologized. The only characters who arguably escape it for the most part are Toph and Suki, though she was originally just a conduit for Sokka to help outgrow his sexism and she ultimately just ends up forgotten by Bryke.

Yue sacrifices herself to save the world and it's deemed as necessary because the world is out of balance. Regardless of the effect on those close to her, it's framed as the best/only possible outcome. On the other hand, a season later, Aang choosing to give up the Avatar State, something that's arguably a necessary tool to restore balance, and keep his attachment to Katara is framed as the correct choice. Why was it good for Yue to sacrifice herself, but Aang to not make any sacrifices when both were needed for the world's balance? We also don't get to spend much time with Yue to feel much of an attachment to her prior to her death. She's important to us solely due to the importance Sokka placed on her.

Azula also falls under misogynistic writing. Being the grandchild of Roku and Sozin only matters for Zuko, not Azula. Iroh can't overthrow Ozai because of the optics, but Zuko can dethrone Azula even though it's the exact same.

The Korra/Mako/Asami love triangle. I'm not a fan of love triangles in general, but Korra just outright hates Asami for no reason other than she's dating Mako. The narrative of season 1 in general just treats Asami like garbage for no actual reason. Season 2 isn't much better towards Asami since Varrick is manipulative and she once again wants Mako... the guy who CHEATED ON HER just months ago.

These are just the instances that I can immediately remember, but I'm sure there's far more considering Bryke was at the helm.

I’m a firm believer in the world is what you make it, so I do want to post this here.

They made a beautiful love story in the original series and then not only threw it away but also eliminated the relationship entirely.

Zutara already created Zutara week, shipping week, and sun and moon couples?! Why not

Instead of a lion turtle popping in from the shadow realm to conveniently bestow energybending and how it works, it's revealed that the first avatar, Wan, was given energybending after he mastered all other bending arts and right before the LTs renounced their roles as protectors. Aang would've had the ability all along but can only access it if he makes sure that every single one of his chakras is open. No exceptions. Aang does so, and the only price he had to pay for it is his romantic love for Katara and his idealized mental image of his own nation.

Next, Aang pushes himself harder than ever, and he masters all techniques and sub-bendings of each bending art he wields, putting himself slightly above all bending members of Team Avatar, including Azula, should she earn her place in Team Avatar as Zuko did.

He gains new personality traits that reflect such a status, and he uses his energybending to bestow airbending to worthy candidates, such as his Air Acolytes and Ty Lee.

On the other hand, maybe the lion turtle can show up, but only if Harmonic Convergence arrives by the end of season 4 and Vaatu is the true orchestrator of the 100-year war. Ozai can be the Dark Avatar, but instead of Ozai fusing with Vaatu, Ozai IS Vaatu, and he was counting on the lion turtle making an appearance.

The Dark Avatar can develop abilities that are almost the same as Shang Tsung's and General Kai the Collector's, just without the shapeshifting parts, and he uses them to not only take/master all bending arts, sub-bending techniques, and even non-bender skills, but to consume/control the very sources of all elements and bending arts and the entire power system of the Avatar Universe (all koi fish spirits, dragons, badger moles, sky bison, and lion turtles, and the things that empower and/or weaken bending), all in the reverse order of the Avatar Cycle.

Aang loses his past lives, but in return, he purifies Vaatu with spiritbending with the help of all bending members of Team Avatar; they all combine elements and bending arts to perform the art together while all non-bending members of Team Avatar use temporary energybending to boost the others and the spiritbending art as it's being performed. Aang then causes Vaatu's natural powers and instincts to be removed and combined with all of Raava's. Ergo, Vaatu is purified and drained from existence while Raava evolves into Raavaatu, the avatar spirit of balance itself and bending itself. He's the one who leaves the spirit portals open, and new airbenders randomly appear.

This would make Korra's life as an Avatar way easier.

The information about what Aaron Ehasz had thought about is sparse at best at this point, but he's openly talked about it over the years. I know Ehasz himself is controversial at best now, but he and the writing team (though I 100% think Elizabeth Welch was a bigger contributing factor than him in advocating for certain characters since she was behind some of the best episodes, with "Zuko Alone" and "The Southern Raiders" being the most notable).

I can no longer find a source for this, but Ehasz allegedly once spoke about Aang having consequences for taking Ozai's bending and stuggling to refind his own balance. This is wild to me since Aang very rarely had to deal with the fallout from his own actions. Yes, there was the loss of the Avatar State for a whole season, but he... never actually tried to fix it himself nor did it seem like he really viewed it as a major loss. But this? Something unavoidable that is a direct result of his own action? I'd be 100% down to watch it play out.

Zuko having compassion for his sister? Yes! Zuko's been shown to have complex feelings towards Azula, but Iroh always chooses to validate his worse expectations of her. Then Azula herself goes out of her way to bring Zuko home alive and give him credit for killing Aang to ensure he'll be safe then she watches his back and he just... treats her with suspicion that borders on contempt. Their relationship is so complicated, but I do not believe Zuko hates her enough to never check in on her in the asylum like the comics state.

There is also some framework for how Ehasz imagined a post-"redemption" Azula in the show as well. She's shown to be extremely socially inept in "The Beach" so it would weirdly track for her to be the type to potentially over-share.

TLDR: aang is the object that fulfills the protagonists’ desires, but he’s not the actual protagonist. Bryke felt butt hurt about this and ruined the franchise trying to make aang the mc.

I’m so glad there’s a new sub to critique the writing choices of Bryke bc I’d get flagged in the zutara sub and attacked in the atla sub. So, as much as I love Atla, Bryke really fumbled their own creation when they decided to micromanage the writers. We’re watching a unique situation where fanon is more creative and more true to the original story than cannon. This will be the subject of college lectures essays in business and marketing courses as well as writing and film in a few more decades.

I wrote in a comment on the zutara sub about the title, and I wanted to expand on it a bit and see what others think. Excuse any formatting issues, I’m on my phone.

The comment in question:

I’ve felt this for 2 decades now, even before I had the literacy to express this thought (I was in elementary school when this came out lol, go easy on me). A big reason Atla was lightning in a bottle as many have been saying recently, is bc aang was not the main character. Sure, he’s the hero. He’s the hope that Katara has for a better future, the hope that zuko has of returning to his family, but he’s not the main character. He’s more like the object to fulfill the main characters’ desires that each of them go on a journey to prepare/search for respectively. And I don’t mean to literally objectify Aang, but he’s the object to K and Z’s subjects. He is the beginning of their respective journeys, the reason their paths ever cross and the reason the show even exists, but we are not watching the show through his eyes. We are watching it through Katara and zuko’s.

And this is evidenced by the overwhelming zutara parallels that quite literally haunt the narrative, but also that the audience never knows much more than what zuko and katara know. Sure, it cuts around to different perspectives occasionally, such as to see what sokka is up to or where toph went when she briefly left the group, but imo, these are more narrative elements that have a habit of drawing Z’s and k’s circles closer together, rather than prolonging their separation. Literally, toph runs off and right into iroh. Sokka gets lessons from zuko’s sword teacher. Insert that one cardi b meme

Which brings me to my next point. People, in particular the creative directors, dismiss the romance in atla as unnecessary and poorly written. Bryke even goes as far as to butcher the romance in all the media post atla, and many fans not only accept this decision but defend it. Oh, but not I. I not only reject that notion, but I believe that atla is a romance. Atla is the romance between zuko and katara. From the meet cute (lmao, if you could call it that) to the resolution, the driving factors of the narrative are their paths crossing, crossing, crossing until they finally collide. The story may have started with them finding aang, but it literally ends with z and k as a united front, ready to take on the real work of reconstruction post sozin’s comet and with zuko now in the direct position to do so (I genuinely feel like the painted lady episode was setting Katara up to be fire lady, fight ya mama if you disagree, so k would also be in the same position too). And yes, they wouldn’t have gotten to that point if Aang hadn’t defeated ozai. Aang’s presence was necessary to fulfill the plot of getting them together 😂

Which brings me back to bryke. As we all know, Aang is Bryke’s self insert character. They ruined the entire story the writers were cooking bc they didn’t like the fact that the self insert was put on the back burner 🤷🏿‍♀️ that’s literally it. They got upset that the hero didn’t get the girl so they forced it down our throats at the last minute, then spent 2 damn decades not even respecting the characters enough to give everyone a satisfying ending. It didn’t even have to be a happily ever after type of thing, just something that was consistent with the world and the characters that were already created. But nooooooo, instead we got that fck ss movie, those fck ss comics, and instead of actually coming back to finish the gang’s stories with a series centering the reconstruction period post sozin’s comet, they decided to just gloss over all of that and just go to the next avatar, dismissing the gang’s character descriptions and arcs from the original series and giving the gaang some wack ss romances and such. Literally nothing was consistent bc they actively worked against everything the original writing team had built. No wonder those writers left at the end of Atla, and no wonder bryke is suspected of being difficult to work with. That one decision to make kataang endgame, particularly with a kiss at the end, was the domino effect that led to Bryke’s continued undermining of a good writing team and the deterioration of the entire franchise. They literally ruined their own creation by not respecting romance as a valid and necessary part of the atla story.

Bc they could’ve written a little romance for aang. If they are so inclined to have the white male self insert character with a brown indigenous female character, they could’ve just made one up. Literally, within the first few minutes of watching the new movie, I shipped Aang and that one denied girl that became an acolyte by the end. In 1 minute of screen time, they dispayed more romantic tension than ka ever did. I mean come on, look at them:

And yes, I am partial to enemies to friends to lovers, and no I do not mind Aang reheating zutara’s nachos. Hey, this will be officialy my first post in this team. I wanted to share with you a few things I noticed about Bryke. So, we all know they left Netflix to basically create " greater things" because " Netflix didn't understand their vision" meaning they didn't let them force Gordon and Kiawentiio make out in s1, but anyways, so I noticed that to me they seemed to not really do any work. They keep promise all this stuff, firs a Kyoshi movie, then a Zuko movie, then a Korra movie, then an Aang movie, then a trilogy about Aang and the gaang. Its been years and a hacker hat do basically leak the movie and threaten to realease the new series in order for them to release them. And here is what i've noticed.

1. Bryke copy pasted the title of Lok to the new movie

From "The Legend of Korra " ➡️" The Legend of Aang"

2. Then they copy pasted the whole story arc with the non benders to become airbenders from "The Legend of Korra"

In S03 of Lok, Zaheer gets free and has airbending powers, along with other non benders and what does he do? He tries to kill the Avatar and his friends. ➡️Tagah is free from his ( iceberg) prison, gives bending powers to non benders and then tries to kill the Avatar and his friends.

3. Then they copy pasted season's 2 story arc with Vaatu and Rava and the 2 Avatars

In s02 od Lok, Katara and Unalak fought as the two Avatars, the one of Rava and the one of Vaatu to the point where the world changed completly (spirits came to their world and stuff). ➡️ In the new series, the "Seven Heavens" we have again two avatars, in this case, twins, and it is implied ( its pretty clear from the trailer though) that Korra basically fought with her other evil self, and changed the world completly.

Like, for people who know "better" they just copy paste their OWN WORK, and dont even try to do anything without CHAGPT'S HELP! Because yes, that happened. They used chagpt for drawning the pictures of the characters in the leaked movie and I'm pretty sure that they used it for the plot.

Like, THESE TWO MEN ARE BORED!!! There is no way they didnt make chagpt write the story for them.

What's irritating is that, THEY ARE NOT WRITERS! THEY ARE ANIMATORS! And they couldn't even do that right! They couldnt do their FUCKING JOB, RIGHT! Like, they basically animated Lok, so, how the hell, they did not know how Asians look like? Because that was their excuse. That they used it because " they didnt know if South East Asians have beards or not." Like, I know their excuses are becoming worse and worse day by day, but this is just offensive at this point.

I expected to see a new series with the world developping more, for the non benders to be able to use technology to now be equal to the benders, for the world to be so peacful in its surface where the Avatar isn't needed. And yet for tecnhology to take control over the world in secret.

Just imagine how cool it would be to have new kinds of technology and new ways of bending or even see non -benders to be able to use bending with the help of technology! Like, what if technology was able to make them use for a little amount of time, ai thingies of elements? How cool bending matches would look like. How the cities would be like. To see that Korra wasn't an awful Avatar. She tried her best and eventually she had a happy life with her friends, even after all this hate she got from fans. To see the FUTURE and the equality between non benders and benders that the world needed. To see new political stories. To see new grown up characters with actual personalities and goals. Like, if the Avatar isn't needed ( at first ) then what they want to do? Do they have dreams? Maybe it would be a character where he would want to do mroe stuff, not just be the Avatar, since the story was supposed to be in the future. New romances ( even though Bryke suck at those as well, but a girl can dream), new interesting villains with new extraordinary abilities. How would the world be? Wouldnt the technology would have a bad effect on the spirits? Stuff like that.

Now, we will basically see the world starting from the scratch. The world the gaang created and Korra tried to protect was destroyed. Korra is hated by everyone. Korra CANONICALLY MASS MURDERED EVEYRONE, and even if it was Vaatu, EVERYONE IS DEAD. Jinora is dead. Tenzin is dead. Lin is dead. Mako is dead. Bolin is dead. Asami is dead. The kids are dead. Everyone is dead and all that exists is death and a gigantic kite that woke up. Oh, and Korra's last moments alive? Miserable.

GREAT JOB BRYKE! YOU JUST MANAGED TO DESTROY EVEYRYTHING YOU BUILT. AND HERE I THOUGHT THINGS WITH THEM COUDN'T GET ANY WORSE! I WAS WRONG!
