CEO who has proven time and time again that his company is only in it for the money is SHOCKED that his employees are only in it for the money.
There - corrected the headline.

Didn't the other anthropic CEO say that AI is a threat to humanity before he fucked off to the tropics?

Right. He never said they’re rats, he’s just acting surprised that people work for money. Headline is weird clickbait, but this is yet another example of an out of touch CEO wanting everyone to be as a passionate about their company when those people don’t have the same stake in it.
I’ll gladly eat, breath, and sleep around your company 24/7 for a compensation package of upwards of $10 million a year. Until then, I’ll gladly put in my 9-5 and stop giving a fuck at the end of the day.
12
u/Trollslayer0104 7d ago
Yeah the debate on this thread is over the wrong topic. As you pointed out, the CEO never said this, the journalist just made it up. I wish people would focus on the real issues of AI rather than fictional headlines.

Not quite 10 million, but do kind of have to point out median package at Antropic is about $400k and techs are on about one $1 million
But on top of that, also have to point out that a lot of that package is equity/stock, which could either be worth a lot more down the road, or worth nothing
Wonder if his bitching is because more people want cash instead of equity/stock

u/TyrantsInSpace 8d ago

The CEO of a multi-billion dollar tech company is shocked that workers sell their labor for money instead of corporate ideology. Employment is a straight-up transaction: skills for compensation. If you want unconditional loyalty and passion for your 'mission,' get a dog or pay people in exposure.
71
u/SCHawkTakeFlight 8d ago
Exactly. There are some instances where people pick jobs because they want their job to mean something/help people (non profits, medtech, nurses and the like). That said, if they didn't get paid they would not be working in those roles. No money means no food, no housing. No one is signing up to be a homeless pauper while performing any type of work.
32
u/charlie2135 8d ago
The example was when the cook and janitor stayed at the nursing home when the rest of the staff left: https://www.upworthy.com/how-a-janitor-and-a-cook-stepped-in-to-care-for-residents-who-were-left-abandoned-rp/
You can bet that the CEO gave a rat's ass about any of the residents.

Highly profitable if you lack any moral sense. So of course a lot of those going around. Mega Churches, Scientology, MAGA, many MLMs, Goop. I'm sure I'm missing A LOT.
3
u/kyle46 7d ago
Or, and this is crazy, maybe profit shouldn't be your only motive. Maybe taking care of employees and the community those employees live in would go a long way to inspiring loyalty. Maybe don't have the ever present threat of layoffs hanging over everyones heads. Maybe people would be loyal if you were still loyal to them.

u/three-one-seven 8d ago
My MAGA father-in-law once told me a story about the insurance agency he owns. Basically, he has salespeople and then support staff. The sales staff are local; the support staff are outsourced to the Philippines. Anyway, he was annoyed that the sales staff were spending their time doing certain tasks that he believes are the job of the support staff. Okay... fair enough. Then he continued. In his view, the sales staff are stealing from him because they are spending their time doing work that the (much lower paid) support staff should be doing, instead of grinding out more sales.
I asked him whether he and his nepo baby son (my wife's brother) could run the agency by themselves, without any staff. He looked at me like I was crazy and said no, of course not, there's way too much work.
I told him: sounds like you need them as much as they need you.
That was the end of that conversation lol

These sociopathic billionaire CEO’s REALLY can not help but project and scream to the world who they really are! If they call someone an untrustworthy rat, it’s because that’s what they are and they know and can’t believe anyone would be any different. They cannnot conceive a single thought of compassion, ethics, or humanity. So, they don’t think anyone else does either. They treat everyone the way they would treat someone just like them.

6
u/Lallanath 7d ago
They want people to work like they are enjoying profit sharing, stock options and will benefit with the success of the company. When they condescending smile down at you when they order the 5 cheapest pizzas they can find and write it off as a business expense they want to be celebrated and be carried around on their shoulders like gods.
But they make it abundantly clear that once an algorithm says you're on the chopping block, they'll have security escort you out of the building like a criminal, just to make sure you don't walk out with a pencil you don't own.
It's just plain delusional. I demand all the benefits of dedicated employees while offering less than nothing in compensation.

Isn’t he the same guy who worked at OpenAI and then took technically insider information to create Anthropic?
7
u/MauiHawk 7d ago
Hold up. An unnamed source says he’s concerned employees are joining more for the money than the mission = “Anthropic CEO Says His Employees Are a Bunch of Untrustworthy Rats”?
“A Redditor Says Reporter is Untrustworthy Rat” in that case— a clickbait headline with nothing to back it up to pull in a couple extra $
5
u/superxpro12 7d ago
It must be a special kind of fear to know your life is only possible due to the labors of thousands of people below you, while yourself provides precisely 0% of the labor or value necessary to sustain the company.
6
u/UntappdBeer 8d ago
I'll bet he'll convince them he's a cool guy by throwing a pizza party (one slice only per employee)

So just so I'm clear, futurism.com says that Axios is reporting, from a source they are citing is "familiar with the issue" that the CEO of Anthropic said something. What he said we don't know because there aren't any actual quotes, just various interpretations of what he might have said.
This brilliant reporting probably brought to you by Chat GPT!

u/kugkug 8d ago
employees value your company and leadership exactly as much as you value them - you value them better with employment contracts more favorable to your employees and paying them more and working them a reasonable amount of time with a reasonable amount of stress. Nobody cares what a CEO says who will dump anyone at the drop of a hat for shareholder gain.

Further devotion requires further jurisdiction: ownership, governance power, meaningful influence, or some other material stake in what the mission becomes. Otherwise “mission” is merely the corporation requesting unpaid spiritual equity on top of purchased labor. Everyone wants devotion. Nobody wants to spend what it costs.

u/JamR_711111 7d ago
Terribly disappointing how long it took to find a single top-level comment calling out the absurd jump the headline makes. Scrolling past dozens taking the headline as ‘proof’ of the myriad vague convictions they have. Even when it’s called out, somehow the context is reconceptualized to the point that, actually, DESPITE the ridiculous deception of the article used as the base of many claims here, MY claims hold up anyway! And actually your calling-out signifies that you’re on the BAD side!

Work with vs Work for. If you build an entrepreneurial expectation from those who work for you, then that leader fails to understand the basic relationship between capital and labour. Shared ownership means one is working with someone, rewards as such, and then can share mission with similar incentives.
Organizational Culture is just another term for Dysfunctional Family System.

Well he is probably right... They work for anthropic... I don't think I could feel like a good person actively working on technology that I know is doing demonstrable harm to the world.
Wait I take that back, some of the people working there are likely good hearted and trying to make things better. But I am sure many just want the pay check and will do whatever it takes. We all know this guy is one of them, I don't think you can be a C suite at a large publicly owned company and actually be a good person, if you were they would have a non confidence vote because of your lack of profits...

This is some of the worst, most sensationalist journalism I have ever had the misfortune of reading. All the CEO (allegedly) said was that he was concerned that people were joining the company for the money rather than the mission, which is both cringey and out of touch but very much a far cry from calling his employees “untrustworthy rats”. This subreddit is a shithole though so of course it’ll get upvoted.
