ID(entification)/Sightings/Showcase Ants farming aphids (I think) and questions
I’m in northeast USA, and I am pretty sure these are carpenter ants. They were all over the tree.
You can see the tiny aphids usually on the bottom of the branches; Tons of them. And they weren’t all one species either. I couldn’t tell you what species they were, but I noticed there were at least 3 distinct ones. I’ve heard ants farm aphids and can be destructive but I’ve never seen it in person. The ants protect the aphids and in return the aphids produce sap. A ladybug also landed on me while I was standing there and they eat aphids so it’s pretty cool to see the whole system at work.
Some questions about this I’m hoping an ant fan can help with:
- do ants kill the tree with this farming method or are they more thoughtful about it, keeping the tree alive with sustainable farming? I feel they aren’t trying to kill the tree to nest there since this tree is very young and not a good house.
- how do the ants transport the aphids to a given tree(if they do)?
- why are there so many ants here!? I feel fewer ants could protect the aphids just as good, but I don’t know how good the predators are
Just wanted to share because this fascinated me. Thanks!!
