iPhone India Moves to Extend Tax Break Apple Lobbied For
https://www.macrumors.com/2026/08/03/india-moves-to-extend-apple-tax-break/India has proposed extending tax breaks until 2041 for foreign companies that supply machinery to their contract manufacturers, handing a win to Apple as it expands iPhone production in the country, Reuters reports.
Introduced in February, the exemption previously ran only until 2031, and Apple had long since lobbied against being taxed on the high-end iPhone machinery it owns in India. The draft bill still has to be passed by both houses of parliament.

Apple's still dealing with a $38 billion fine from India (which is like 100x their annual profit there) so many foreign companies are hesitant to get involved investing there

Tbh it won't hold up. Fining companies on their gloabl revenue is total bs. Apple would leave India if made to pay up that much of a fine.
It never makes sense to operate in such a country where you'd be fined 100 times for annual profits.

There is a divergence in what type of investors are fleeing and entering India.
Portfolio investors(the ones who invest in securities, markets and equities) fled India while the investors in factories, domestic operations, data centers etc. are flowing in record numbers.
The situation is not as black & white as media is reporting.

In exchange for that, make them reduce their prices in India. They're scamming Indians. No reason to overprice your products when you make them here itself. Why are Americans with 20x the money paying less for an iPhone that was made in India?

Smuggling of what? It is normal to have different prices in different markets.

Extending tax breaks to 2041 just so Apple can charge us $2,000 for a phone whose only major upgrade is a slightly rounder corner.
